Update #1: Issue-by-issue summaries have entries through Mister Miracle (v.1) #15! Continue Reading! Contrary to how it may look, Barda was actually the first character I did when I started these read lists, alongside Angela (Image/Marvel). Why aren't those the first two uploaded? I started those lists (gasp) handwritten. When I started the other lists, I had already started using an online, multi-device note-taking app, so the notebook was forgotten. Now that I'm uploading the rest of my lists, it's time to back and update Barda's. This is the best list I could come up with without having already read every issue. Oddly, there aren't many resources at all for other Barda reading lists, and the ones that do exist are missing pieces, haven't been updated, or focus on a Barda from a different Earth. In making this list, I've combined a few partial lists, filled in some spaces I knew were missing, and guessed for only a handful of likely no-longer-canon appearances. I'll get around to typing up my previously written notes soon, I hope, but the reading list itself is complete! Continue Reading to follow Big Barda's history, and always remember Barda Is! Mister Miracle Vol. 1 #4-17
4) Barda's first appearance, and the Furies. Barda pops up behind Oberon on Earth, looking for Scott. She was recently promoted, with a new military uniform (her outfit). She gets filled in and rushes off to save Scott from Dr Bedlam. Issue introduces her mega-rod, strength, and skill. Scott has to tell her, "This is a house of friends, Barda. The strong don't rule here." It establishes Barda and Scott grew up together at Granny's orphanage. Page 22: first appearance of her off-duty bikini thing. Scott is busy telling Oberon that she's just a dangerous child soldier, then in walks Barda in that outfit. "I take take it all back, Oberon. That's a big, beautiful WOMAN playing soldier!" Issue has the first sexist Oberon remark. 5) Barda is stretching in her 2-piece suit. Terms used in conversation make her out to be young, maybe 18-19. "This woman's lib thing is getting more series than I thought!" yeesh. Kirby wasn't much a wordsmith. She finds a peaceful lagoon and greatly enjoys it; she decides not to return to Apokalips. Enter "side-clip," which is replaced by her mega-rod when she transforms. She is taken out by people with an "Energy Disperser" and is captured. Scott learns she had been used as unwilling bait by others from Apokalips. Barda is paralyzed without her helmet in Vundabar's palace. Scott rescue her and carries her out, Bridal style. 6) "Funky Flashman" We meet Funky Flashman. Barda calls his gun primitive, but spins it cowboy style and crushes it in her hand. "Ego, ignorance, and hostility," she says. she takes a bath and notes individual needs on Apokalips are low priority and she's used to sharing her baths with hundreds of Furies. Her side-clip pings, warning her of an attack. She waits until her old Fury team (Battle Unit) arrives to attack. Mad Harriet is first, then Stompa. They phase out. Lashina is third, Barda intercepts her attack, then she phases out, too. They send the Mother Box used for tracking them off with Flashman, and the Furies appear there. Bernadeth uses"farren-knife," Barda and Scott find their house destroyed. They decide to go back to Apokalips, Barda notes Scott got out before they "got to him," hence her darker demeanor. 7) "Apokalips Trap" Barda and Scott prepare to invade Apokaips. She has a goodbye with Oberon, hugging him while they give each other shit one last time. Mega-Rod takes them to Grayborders, a community on Apokalips. Barda uses her title of Officer to trick some guards, and steals a "magna-car." They are attacked, Barda drops mega-rod and someone called Kanto increases her gravity. Scott is captured. 8) "The Battle of Id" They took Barda back to the Fury quarters, Barda takes out the guards. Her former barrack is in disarray. Barda tells them to take their fight to Section Zero. They go, a Fury drugs a guard, and the rest follow in a massacre. Lashina takes out the section director's post. They interrogate him for Scott's location. When they bust in to save him, Granny calls Barda a traitor, she counters that she's the purest and most superior product ever turned out of the orphanage. "With Scott dead, I'm going to destroy everything that killed him!" "You taught me how to hate, but you didn't teach me WHOM to hate." Later, Scott (alive) tells her the secret to Granny's power is her ability to shake their self-confidence. 9) "Himon" The story of young Scott Free. We meet Auralie (note: it is falsely noted elsewhere her first appearance isn't until 2019. That is incorrect, she was a Kirby creation, as was the tragedy of her death), then meet Barda in an older uniform who steals Auralie back to the Furies. Barda and Scott meet for the first time. Later, Willick outs Scott as having illegal hair (lol) (well it's really because they're supposed to be all the same) (but still. lol.). We learn Auralie is dead through BRUTAL and awful means. Himon rescues them, the Furies hack out a path to help Scott escape, with Barda leading. It says Barda is a product of "special powers training," and she declines to leave with Scott when he asks. 10) "The Mister Miracle to Be!" Barda, Scott, and the Furies are all back on Earth. "the Head" Attackes them, psychically, capturing them all. Mad Harriet breaks them out of their cell with her claws. Enter Mike McCracken of All-Nation's Agency who is a flirt and Barda does not like it. Security patrol attacks and is stopped by Barda. Scott escapes a rocket, Barda's Mega Rod is almost taken by some scientist but she blocks him. She uses it to phase them to their Earth hime, where Oberon has just met the Original Mister Miracle's son, Ted Brown. Together, they decide Scott, Barda, and the Furies will be a stage show. 11) "The Greatest Show Off Earth" Barda and the team are practicing while Ted films. I get the feeling he watches the films later, alone. Lashina notes the feats Barda accomplishes for the show are child's play compared to what she can do, and wouldn't be considered impressive on Apokalips. Bernadeth ignites oil with her dimension blade, Lashina cracks the pole Mister Miracle stands on, Stompa kicks it into the oil. It's genuinely the most ridiculous and overdone display of teamwork I've ever seen in comics. But again. Kirby was an idea man and a visionary. Later, the furies help take out some robots, and Scott goes to face Doctor Bedlam. He wins, and then returns to Barda and the team. 12) "Mystival" Deep into the issue, Stompa kicks down a fence backed with photographers leering at them on the beach. Mysival calls later and tells Scott he wants to die. Barda wears a 1-piece suit! Likely to differentiate from what she wore swimming. Act practice: Stompa stomps a rock off a see-saw, Bernadeth cuts it into 3 with her dimension blade, and Lashina whips them at Mister Miracle. It's the most ridiculous, roundabout way to throw sharp edges at someone. Scott doesn't escape and Barda intervenes. "My business is cheating death, not greeting him with open arms!" They go to Mystival, Barda and Oberon are commanded to sit. Barda helps them win in the end; the show must go on. 13) "Dictator's Dungeon" Barda is in a white, long-sleeve top w/ a black collar, purple skirt and boots. She argues with Oberon about if Scott can make it out of the act he's in. Ted is kidnapped, Scott and Barda are also taken. Barda breaks the airship of attackers. "You numbskulls! I'll teach you to respect for the equal sex!" Their gun backfires in her hand when she grabs it. They are dumped into the snow and Barda wears Scott's cape to keep warm. They break into the castle, throwing rocks at soldiers and guards, but are nerve attacked and they wake up with Ted in a cell. Scott is zapped, there is acid rain and they hide under his cloak. Scott escapes and breaks them out. Barda says, "A world of friends, Ted. We'll look after each other." 14) "the Quick and the Dead" Barda and the team are setting up a Mister Miracle act in a field. Stompa and Lashina fight, Barda breaks them up. She is clearly characterized as a natural leader. Ted asks if she's in love with Scott, she responds, "Until now, I-I never gave it much thought!" She wears a red tank top and long pants. 15) This issue they start labelling the issue with chapters instead of one name at the front. Barda is back in her bikini, but no "side clips" and a less bra-like top. She uses giant nutcrackers to "smash" Mister Miracle as part of an act. She's noticably less concerned and more confident about Scott in his acts, maybe she's learned his strength and trusts him now. Barda catches an attacker. That night, she and Scott follow Shilo out. She's wearing a long white tee, black belt, and long orange pants. SHe uses aero-discs with Scott in costume. Scott made them for the act and notes how common they are on Apokalips. Barda takes out a whole 5-man crew in one hit. They are zapped with "jammers brain wave silencer" lmfao. Barda dismantles a big gun, tells the aoldier he's going to a pen full of wolves. Barda and Scott offer to give Shilp "special power training." Barda says she lost a friend who couldn'tescape, referencing Auralie, and that's why she can't and won't fail Scott. 16-17 coming soon!
