Character Reading Lists/Orders + Light Commentary
Starting in 2020, I began working on complete comic reading orders for my favorite (female) comic characters! It really started as a personal research project, but I quickly learned that reading up on the life and times of my favorite Marvel heroines also works as an excellent relaxation device, and I gravitated more and more into my project, growing the list of characters as I went.
By now, there are about ten women I've compiled lists on, and I'm always working on adding more! The lists below are every issue, in order, any respective character was in, but it's more than that. I'm actively working on expanding the lists to include summaries of the relevant events in each issue, with light commentary. The commentary isn't too much, but it's to show how these stories aged, from a modern, feminist perspective. It's also worth noting I tend to take these commentary notes fairly quickly as I read, and often don't get around to going back and editing what I've written. If you ever need clarification on anything, send me and email!
I've said it a few times before, just because some of these stories or comics didn't age well or maybe don't hold up to our modern standards, I try to think about comics like any art: you wouldn't say early American artists were talentless, just because they hadn't figured out perspective, yet. You also wouldn't say Claude Monet or Henri Matisse were poor artists, just because their style evolved into something not-the-norm. The same can be said about retro comics, and comics that don't necessarily fit the cape-and-cowl mold.
That being said, I hope someone out there finds something in these Read Lists that brings them some enjoyment, answers some questions, or subdues/inspires their curiosity. The list is constantly being updated, so I'll keep the most recently updated lists at the front of the character list--top left for updates!
