Jessica Cruz (DC) Reading List!9/2/2022 SEPTEMBER 2nd 2022 UPDATE: Summary of Events complete through Jess' run as Power Ring! Reading List updated through current timeline! Hear about Jessica in the coming September 2022 Yancy Street Special! Jessica Cruz is a character I consider myself lucky for catching on to when I did. 2016's Rebirth at DC realigned a lot of comics and the characters who star in them, including Green Lanterns, which starred Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. Simon first appeared as an anti-hero in 2012, and Jessica was the next-made Lantern. Her story starts as her being possessed by the character Volthoom, who made her his new Power Ring. In time, Jessica earns the title of Green Lantern by Sacrificing herself to stop Volthoom, and joins the Justice League. In Rebirth, she and Simon were teammates by the order of Hal Jordan, and she dated Wally West for a time. While she hasn't been in the comics so much recently, I have high hopes for Jessica Cruz's future in comics! Jessica as "Power Ring" First Cameo: Green Lantern Vol. 5 #20 (July 2013) Jessica is mentioned by name and seen by one hand, fighting Simon First Full Cameo: Justice League Vol. 2 #30 Jessica's sister, Sara, tries to talk to her outside her apartment. She talks about how jessica was rambling about the end of the world, stocked u p on supplies to lasat an eternity, but turned them away when the drama was really happening. First Full Appearance: Justice League Vol. 2 #31 The ring of Volthoom, in Jessica's apartment, tries to get her to accept it and destroy the earth. The ring urgers her fear on, telling her it kniws why she's scared, that attackers from the past are still out there. she tries to shoot it, but it forces itself onto her. later the ring forces her to walk down the city streets, with construct monsters attacking poeple. The Doom Patrol show up to stop her. Justice League Vol. 2 #32-39 #32: Jessica, as power ring, is forced to fight the Doom Patrol team. She begs the ring to stop, tries to explain to the Patrol. it's Element Girl who figures out she's not in control of the ring, and protects her from a hit. The Justice League show up, and Cyborg is the first to get to Jess and try to help get the ring off. The ring connectrs to Cyborg and shows her history, that she and friends were hunting in the woods and witnessed men burrying a body. Her friends were killed but she escapes. When jessica is knocked out, Niles tries to take he ring off her, but Lex Luthor interrupts. #33: the issue starts talking about Jessica's agoraphobia, really sarcastically. damn, the writing is super sexist. the ring talks to jessica about how it thinks she's weak for just going home and hiding in her apartment after the accident instead of going to the police to help catch the killers. She's ttally out of control, and Luthor tries to take her out. Niles wnats to do "psucho-surgery" but Batmans stops him, He tells Jess she isn't a criminal, she's a victim, and her pain of that is being used by the ring. They embrace, and he has her let her fear go, transforming her back into herself. She is now under League Protection, and as batman tells him, they didn't need Lex. #34: The Flash does some tests on Jessica and the ring, which is still connected to her. He explains to her that power rings are designed to o ercome great fear, channelling willpower. This one on her is from a parallel dimension that worked the opposite--feeding on the fear and making it grow. then the ring wakes up, and transforms her into Power Ring again, and this time she knows its up to her to "put the genie back in the bottle". She manages to do it, at great effort. She's decided now she wants to learn to use to ring prperly. #35: Jessica is helping the league with various disasters, and the Flash is kind of being her mentor/buddy. Later, at a stakeout with the Flash, the ring whispers to her, sensing her fear of crowded places. Elsewhere, the league discusses her being there. #36: Jessica is one of the League members who has been infected with the Amazo virus. #37: again she appears in a hospital bed with other members of the League. #38: again, same. when the virus wakes the infected League members as Amazos, she is among them. #39: the infected Leaguers fight Diana and Kal-El and Lex. Later, cured, she and the Flash help make vaccines. Even later, she talks to the Flash again, who introduces her to Hal Jordan. Barda points out something is wrong with Power Rnig, who breaks open the preggo Superwoman's cell. Jess thinks that it is the last ring's Power Battery that is trying to help her through all of this, but it turns out to be cyvorg! Justice League Vol. 2 #49 (May 2016) jessica as Power Ring on the cover Power Ring/Volthoom/Jess stand against WW to save Superwoman in the birth of her ?child. Power Ring rushes Superwoman. More sexism. In the "Green Realm," as they're calling the place Jessica and Cyborg' consciousnesses are, because Cyborg copied himself when he girst connected to Volthoom/the ring.
