Regular reader of SSG may have noticed I didn't publish a new comic Pull List for this week or the last, these middle weeks of November. While one was an unusually short week of comic pulls for me personally, and the other was surely worthy, the whole world was a bit taken by the happenings of American politics, for the past few weeks or so. Instead, to distract from the wishy-washy news cycle, I worked on my Madelyne Pryor complete appearance reading order! Since her appearances are much fewer in numbers than that of Illyana Rasputin's Magik, who I did something similar on before, I was able to actually read all the issues on the list. This ended up with me adding brief summaries of the relevant events of each issue, to give context for anyone looking to learn more about the Goblin Queen. I've edited the notes I took while reading as much as possible, but please forgive any discrepancies or errors I might have missed. My over-eager enthusiasm for Madelyne Pryor is matched by my desire to get more people to fall in love with her character, too. Additionally, while most issues summarize just Maddie's role, a few include more in-depth explanation of the whole issue's events. Continue Reading for the reading order and history of Madelyne Pryor! He tells her everything we are coming to realize: he never should have filled the loss of Jean with Maddie, never loved her truly, and when he learned the real Jean was back, he had to return to his true love. As he speaks, his costume changes from X-Men to X-Factor, and Jean's naked body takes Maddie's clothes. "She would scream, but she has no mouth. A nothing being, in a nowhere place. Abandoned.. and alone." Uncanny X-Men #234 the x-men are still out fighting in Australia, but back at their base Madelyne is still unconscious with Gateway watching over her. "Wouldn't ya rather shape your own destiny, than play the perpetual victim?"She denies him a few times, then he offers her to choose from one of his 5 fingernails, showing various aspects of her personality. He basically makes her think she can safely indulge in her wildest fantasies in this dream , so she can confront them in the real world better. He brings up revenge on Scott, and she says "it's only a dream." With this in mind, she picks the vengeful aspect of her personality. Immediately, S'ym laughs and tells her it's real. She appears later in the sequence as the Goblin Queen, addressing the technician or whoever, dressed as Sinister, but she doesn't know who he is dressed as. she warns him to tell his masters to be careful lighting a match in the darkness, in case they strike an inferno, and blasts him telepathically. That was what happened to the guys found in 237. the military folks call her mutant 9818, and say sh was returned to her cell. Gengeineer asks why this guy didn't use his powers to wipe out hers, and he says he can't wipe out what isn't there. her power was immense, but they couldn't detect it in any way. He goes to ask her personally, then, and she plays dumb. they argue about his use of mutants as military force, and she is coy. She and her friend talk in their cells, later. Havok breaks in with the other x-men eventually, he says he's looking for Maddie. Somehow, Maddie gets baby Nathan and checks out where the Genegineer creates babies. He comes across her there, pulls a gun on her. he's sweating and she's playing coy again. she says if that, earlier, was her response to a psychic threat, imagine her response to a real one. Just then, Havok finds her, and they all go out together. Carol is running Rogue again. They destroy the building, and Havok panics for a moment thinking Maddie was still inside. She leaps to his arms and kisses him. He asks about the baby and she says it's been taken care of. He says she's his brother's wife, and she reminds him he walked out on them. She says she guesses she got her signals crossed but admits he has feelings for her as well. They go sleep together. Sinister has baby Nathan. As Alex sleeps, Maddie speaks aloud. she doesn't have dreams. She says she could save him, but it's best she doesn't. She goes to the computer la and speaks with N'astirh of an approaching grand design. He calls her Goblin Queen, and she says she is paying them all back for the misery they've caused in an Inferno. Uncanny X-Men #240 Maddie and Alex dance in formal wear across an empty ballroom. They trade flattering remarks, then take champagne on to the patio. They are interrupted by a group of scientists or something, who say the Empire State Building is growing. Madelyne is now drawn with sneaky cat eyes whenever she's not a main part of the frame. The scientists are kicked out of the hotel, and in the elevator on the way down, the red walls turn into demons and eat them up. Maddie uses a telescope to see the ESB turning into goblins, and Alex asks if she sees anything interesting. She is in pure seductress mode, they find glasses in the elevator. Alex notes the wind in the elevator shaft sounds like screaming, and she says all in good time and kisses him. Gateway teleports them back to Australia, where it is midday, not midnight. Alex says he can't wait to spend more time with her, Maddie says she needs some to herself, now. Alex chastises himself mentally for not looking out for her feelings better. She uses Gateway to teleport away. She arrives at Bard College Cemetery, where Jean was buried. She goes through memories, those of Scott saying goodbye before marrying Maddie, the moment Scott says I Do at their wedding, Maddie calls out LIAR! She goes to Jean's grave, says it was her fault and they were a happy family until she came back. Jean's parents are there, and think she is Jean, but Maddie turns them into goblins and denies that he is their precious daughter. N'astirh the demon lord arrives, Maddie says she knows he doesn't think she can hold her own, as she can read his mind. He asks who she is, and she says "My own woman." He also works for her, so he tells her everything ill be as she wishes. Maddie still wants her baby, and N'astirh says her will will be done. Later, she arrives tot he location N'astirh gives her in Nebraska, which is Sinister's lab. Baby Nathan is there, and Madelyne briefly see's in her mind's eye that she was there, too. She threatens N'astirh for the truth, or she'll feed him to her demon pets (Jean's parents). He tells her the question is not for him, but for Sinister. She turns, and Mister Sinister is there. He introduces himself, and says he is her father. Uncanny X-Men #241 Madelyne and Sinister talk, repeating the last page of the previous issue, more or less. She has him clarify, and he says he created her. Maddie knows he is the one behind the Marauders being sent to kill her, and tells him so. N'astirh thinks to himself that the more he sees her use her powers, the more they appear to grow. Madelyne sets her "pets" after him, he smacks them away and chains Madelyne up like crazy. His defenses turn her attacks back on her, and she calls out for N'astirh to help her. Sinister tells her he has left her alone, to his "mercy." Maddie tries to insist she has nothing to do with him, but when Sinister asks her to recall her family, she can't. she does recall a memory of her childhood friend getting hit by a car, but that turns out to be a memory of Jean Grey. Watching from afar, N'astirh thinks how sad it is to see such a powerful creature brought so low. But, he admits, it makes her perfect for his picking, with the addition of one "final element". Sinister tells Madelyne of his original plan to kill Jean Grey's parents and raise her in his "orphanage," but Xavier got there first. So he took a sample of Jean and created his own--Madelyne. He was disappointed in her until the night Jean sacrificed herself on the moon, and her powers finally manifested. Sinister talks about how he was intrigued by the possibility of making her a new Jean Grey, still connected to the Phoenix force, and what a child would be like with Scott Summers. He set them up to meet, and nature took its course. He knew Jean would sense Maddie's truth the moment they met, so he sent the Marauders to eliminate her, and they botched the job. Sinister admits he doesn't know how she got to him and his lab, but he's excited to take her apart and discover it. She says his brood mare has fulfilled his purpose and he doesn't need her anymore, then says she doesn't belong to him, won't be ruled by him, and won't be condemned by him as she lets off massive energy waves. She breaks free, and challenges Sinister to stop messing around. N'astirh comes in then, fully red, and gives her baby Nathan. She says she will destroy the hopes of Sinister AND Scott in one swoop, in Inferno. Excalibur #6 Rachel Summers realizes her baby brother is in danger, since she established a mind-link with him shortly after his birth. She heads to the Empire State Building, and mistakes the lady in charge for her mother. Madelyne corrects her, and launches her away to get sucked into the walls of the building. X-Factor #37 Scott suddenly seems to give a shit about his son, 36 issues after abandoning him. He and Jean and the other members are searching him out, calling him Christopher. the goblins and demons bring N'astirh the baby, and he bring him to the Goblin Queen. Scott is shocked to see her alive, and she says to call her her Goblin Majesty. She corrects them on his name, too, and says Scott has no right to either of them after he abandoned them. He insists she died in Dallas and the whole world saw it, but here she is. She says she's become what he made her, since she knew he never wanted her, just Jean. Jean says Poor Baby Christopher, and that she can't telepathically see Maddie at all. Maddie says Nathan is hers, and that Jean is stealing him like she's stolen everything else. N'astirh gets in the way of a killing blow to Jean, and Maddie confronts him. He thinks to himself how easy it was to subvert her mind, being such a blank slate to begin with. Maddie calls him out on all of it, knowing how he tempted and twisted her. He thinks of his plan, to have her kill his son and release enough energy to blow a whole through to limbo, letting the demon hordes through. Maddie tosses the baby to her goblins, who miss, and jean almost snatches him before his mother steps in. She tells Jean while Jean may have been first, Maddie is more powerful. Jean realizes her parents are the goblins. Maddie's were glass and steel, and she's grown hard like them. Madelyne realizes Scott loves the baby more than her, maybe more than Jean, so she'll kill him to hurt him. She says she already shattered Scott's family once by having him leave the X-Men and live with her in Alaska, if only he'd stayed, they wouldn't be here now. Madelyne now knows her power, and attacks them. They barely save themselves, speaking of her unbelievable power. She says she's going to turn brother on brother and kill his baby herself, then transforms back into the innocent looking pilot version of herself to throw them off. Just then, Wolverine comes up and grabs jean, saying he needs to make sure she's real. Uncanny X-Men #242 The issue starts with Wolverine (forcibly) kissing Jean. I guess that was how he'd smell out a fake. Jean pushes him away, says she belongs to no one, and reminds everyone what they're here for. Wolverine says he could smell that she was into the kiss. Ew? X-Factor and x-Men fight among themselves, flooding the area. Scott goes to save his ex(?) wife, who asks where he was the night Nathan was stolen and she was almost killed. He says he didn't know, and she says it wouldn't have changed anything if he did. He denies it while holding her arm, she says he's hurting her--always hurting her, and continuing to do it. Havok comes up to them and starts a fight with his brother, because he broke his vow to Madelyne. N'astirh comes up then, having been remade by the techno-organic virus, and takes out the brothers. He goes after jean with her parent-demons, Maddie says all she has to do is kill them to survive. Maddie says she's only getting started when Scott begs her to stop. N'astirh comes charging at her with a demonic carriage, and she tells Scott to choose which one of them he can save. He saves Jean, and N'astirh says he has sealed Maddie and Earth's fate. Alex tries to stop the carriage, getting in the way of Scott trying to save Maddie. Jean is fuming, calling Maddie a witch and all that trash. Alex follows the carriage up to the empire state building, where his clothes have been shredded to look like Maddie's outfit. He asks if Scott and Jean were right about her being made Goblin Queen, she asks if it matters. He says no, he swore to stand by her till the end. She names him Goblin Prince. Colossus tries to stop them from entering the building, but it shuts and he says to N'astirh he will stop them anyway, climbing up the walls. At the top f the tower, N'astirh is telling Maddie and Alex how things will be once the enchantment is done and the demons take over. Maddie interrupts him, reminding him she does what she wants. He warns her it must be done my sunrise, and she transforms the area into a demonic alter. Madelyne takes her son from his demonic kind-of grandparents, talking to him about how she admires him and wishes it was just the two of them from the start. Nathan calls out to Jean for help, which Maddie overhears. It infuriates her that he, too, is turning to Jean over her. N'astirh says creation is not big enough for her and Jean, so she says she'll take her heart and soul. Outside, Jean and Storm reunite, interrupted by N'astirh coming to capture Jean. Other team members step in and Rogue gets him off. At the top, Alex asks Madelyne if things have to be this way, she says an Inferno is nature's way of clearing dead brush, right as colossus makes it to their location. Havok blasts him away, ice man catches him and ice-slides him into N'astirh. In the end, he is killed by Storm, who basically tells Scott to shut up or nut up. Jean is whipped up by her neck to where Madelyne is, starting the ceremony. X-Factor #38 Scott asks what Madelyne wants, she says vengeance. She says he abandoned them and broke their union, so why not break the physical union, the baby? She says she looked for shelter with the X-Men, but was never one of them. X-Factor and X_Men fight more. Maddie talks about Scott and Storm's first fight, when she watched from the shadows knowing he'd need to be humiliated to decide to stay with her and his baby. She says now she knows that it was her latent powers awakening that helped a powerless storm win that fight, giving her what she desired. it also comes out that Madelyne was tricking X-Men into thinking X-Factor were hunting mutants for bounties. Madelyne blocks a blast with demon Mr. Grey. She gets Dazzler and Longshot to fight for her, taking out Dark Angel. She tells Angel she and him are alike, both being used by powerful men. She tell shim in her new world order he will have a place. Scott attacks but admits most of what she says is true about him, and this is his fault. Madelyne thinks to herself that there is no joy in her revenge, so it must end now. She sends Havok to kill Scott. Angel ends up freeing jean, and it becomes red haed against red head. Jean says to give her the baby, Maddie says he's hers and she's free to dispose of him as she chooses. When the x-men try to intervene, Maddie puts up a bubble force field so it's just the 3 of them. Madelyne recounts her creation via Sinister to Jean, and jean tries to say her life has been stolen twice now. Maddie she's she's a copy that lost a lot in regeneration. She shows Jean the memory of Annie Richardson, childhood friend, making the point that everything Maddie started with Jean. Jean realizes that Maddie's memories and personality came from the fraction of the Phoenix that had duplicated Jean and then destroyed her, then tried to return the taken portion of her. That portion of the phoenix/jean found Madelyn, pre-'birth', and attached to her. It was the moment Sinister saw that Maddie had powers, and is why Maddie remembers that day as a flight crash with screaming dying voices and flames--that was the phoenix force destroying a planet before the fake jean. Jean and Maddie connect, putting the pieces together. Maddie was told that cover story as an explanation of the plane to explain the memories, was placed near Scott to they'd fall in love and have a baby. The phoenix had loved Scott, so so did Maddie. When Jean returned, Scott left, then tried to go back for Madelyne 18 issues later. She was already gone, and sinister had already wiped away all signs of her except a baby's rattle. After Scott left them, the airline was purchased by sinister, and Maddie was hired to fly to SFO. She brought Nathan with her as a last minute change of plans. She went with the x-men after the marauders attack, even sacrificed herself with them. Scott rejected her, so she didn't ask the goddess who saved them to go to him. he wasn't anything but hate. By now, all the mutants are back on their feet in their right minds, including her Goblin Prince. Maddie censored the news so the X_Men only knew the worst of the X-Factor team. N'astirh's puppet, Sym, offered her her dark powers, making her his bomb. Jean says Maddie has what she never will--Scott's son. She says they can offer her a safe haven, and the mutants break into her bubble. Maddie says if the only way to destroy Sinister's prize is to kill herself, so be it. In this, we learn what she is truly angry at--Mister Sinister. Madelyne lets off a massive blast of energy, which should have killed them all. Instead, she is slowly dying and Jean is watching from in her head. As she dies, the part of the phoenix that she had goes back into jean, who accepts it. After she is dead, Scott admits he lied to Madelyne that he loved her for who she was. Alex is mad Scott didn't save her. He says Scott chose to hurt her, he chose to help. In the end, they decide to confront sinister. Uncanny X-Men #243 Madelyne is dead. This issue goes into Jean's psyche, where she contains memories of Maddie's, the Phoenix force, as well as her own. Sinister is trying to destroy her mind, Madelyne is in there, too, half of the time, when it's not jean in control. Sinister offers Maddie a new start, she denies him. The mind sequence ends, and jean reports Madelyne is a part of her, now. She understands her anger. Uncanny X-Men #499 Madelyne appears, unnamed, in the final page, hidden by shadows. She asks Lady Mastermind to join her cause. Uncanny X-Men #501 Pixie is going home from a party and is attacked by a street mob for being a mutant. Emma shows off an apparently million dollar lingerie to Scott, which we don't see any of and he just kinda sits there like she's a piece of meat. They kiss and whatnot, he goes to do some shit. Wakes her up yelling later about his project, a baby crib for the baby Cable has. He stutters through a reference to Nathan's origins, not even mentioning Madelyne Pryor. He said he was on the run and couldn't be there, all BS. In the morning, he goes to Greymalkin Industries, what Warren apparently set up for them as a base. Pixie comes in, half dead. Then we see who did it, a group of young men under the control of Empath, who is acting under the orders of a yet seen Maddie. She ties him up and whips him, then we see her in this honestly hideous S&M outfit for some reason as Red Queen. The X_Men set up a trap for these attackers with Karma, who editing felt the need to point out was a lesbian. Uncanny X-Men #502 This Greg Land art is atrocious. Never let this man near X-Ladies again, period. Apparently the X-Men took one of the Hellfire Cult (the attackers) and kidnapped them and torture them for information. okay... Madelyne tortures Empath sexually (???) for information on Emma Frost, and makes it clear she plans on impersonating her. The X-Men attack their base, Maddie says they'll never find her. Uncanny X-Men #503 While the X-Men are searching the Hellfire Cult base, Madelyne--still in S&M gear--propositions Scott, disguised as Emma. Why does he think it's normal for Emma to have gotten changed mid-mission? His penis, I imagine. It was clearly unusual and very unprofessional, even for Emma. Scott is just dumb. Later, in Madripoor, Madelyne asks Chimera to join her, and she will give her anyone who has died she wishes back. In a club that night, Scott mentions to Emma how great it was "earlier." when she clearly has no idea what he's talking about, he see's Maddie across the room for a moment. Uncanny X-Men #504 ah, Dodson art. much better. Issue starts with Madelyne asking Spiral and Lady Deathstrike to join her team. Emma goes into Scott's head because she doesn't trust that nothing happened at the Hellfire Cult place--a lie. What she finds in his head is a bunch of scantily clad X-Ladies--but she notes, not a single red head. She finds a door with an X on it, inside is a white room and a tiny black box. He says its a place for secrets, she says secrets have no place in their relationship. He says Jean taught him, and Emma looses the psychic connection. Uncanny X-Men #508 Madelyne is on to Regan, sister of Lady Mastermind (I think). They meet in a cemetery, and fuck you, Greg Land. Maddie turns the gun she pulls on her into smoke. Three of Madelyne's team then go to steal Kwannon's body from a grave site in Tokyo. Back in SF later, the Deathstrike sisters are fighting. Maddie saves Chimera, who was stabbed. Their plan is to fill the dead Kwannon with Betsy Braddock's spirit or whatever. Emma and the Cuckoos experience a massive psychic event. The sisterhood do their thing, putting Betsy into Kwannon. Uncanny X-Men #509 Madelyne explains the history of Kwannon and Betsy, kind of, and says she found Betsy "dancing" between parallel worlds. She says she dreamed up new spells and damnations to bring her back. She also admits she will be the next one to have it done, since she has no body. The sisterhood gets angry and swipes at her, but she's not physically there. She says Scott was too self-obsessed to find the true danger. Chimera and Martinique get Scott, Northstar and Dazzler. Mastermind gets Emma Frost, in a weird S&M rig, and Spiral gets Beast and Nightcrawler. Lady Deathstrike skewers Logan. Uncanny X-Men #510 I guess Logan is fighting Betsy in Kwannon's body now. Emma breaks out of her weird...harness, Scott is being tortured in his mind lmao. It's school, and both red-heads are in class. idiot. Logan eventually gets to Maddie. She says telepathically to the others that she ahs what they came for, so time to go. it is revealed in the end it was a lock of Jean's hair, kept by Logan. creeper. Uncanny X-Men #511 Downtown, Madelyne gets the sisterhood to lend her their powers. Emma picks up on the energy. At jean's grave, the sisterhood fights Domino for Jean's body. But, the body in her casket wasn't jean, and her plan fails. X-Men (2013) #12 Lady Deathstrike, in a new body, gives Madelyne her own new body, for real this time. Storm and Rachel are the first to discover them. Storm offers Maddie and Selene to just walk away without a scratch, they do. X-Men: The Exterminated #1 (B Story) Flashback only from Nathan Summers' POV. Cable remembering his early days. He remembers Scott being an absent father, Madelyne holding on to him for dear life. Alex wants to talk to his brother, Lorna says it's more important to help Maddie. Even Scott's grandparents knew something was wrong. Both parents cried themselves to sleep, in separate rooms. There is an earthquake that morning, and Scott and his dad find Maddie trapped under a tree. She says whatever he thinks of her, save their son. Scott gets all fatherly and husbandly, and Nate says he knew they were a family. They spend a few days on the Starjammer, and everything seems super great when they get back. the story forgets to mention that Scott abandons them permanently, like, the next day. Hellions #1 At the end of the issue, Madelyne is revealed to be in Sinister's former lab, practicing her magic on various strung-up Marauders clones. She puts one back to sleep and is revealed, saying "rest for the horror to come." Hellions #2 the Hellions arrive to Sinister's "orphanage," to see the bodies of mutated Marauder clones there. One member of the Hellions, Greycrow, is especially shocked, since he was a member of their team. They all fall to the floor, and approach the Hellions. Arclight, one of the clones, points and says "kwheen", referring to the Goblin Queen. She tells them "Surely those who sent you knew what I would do to you." Alex freaks and asks when she came back, she responds years ago, but no one cared. She orders her slaves to take them, and the teams fight. She destroys one when it tries to kill Havok, saying it stands between her and her lover. He says she's bleeding, she says he will, too. More fighting. Hellions #3 at the clone farm, Maddie tells Alex to hush, wiping out his mouth to be smooth skin. She goes into her back story-- "once there was a girl from the land of the midnight sun...who longed to fondle the sky, but was grounded by the touch of another. Your brother..." She says she became a nothing girl in a nowhere place after cherishing him, when his first love returned. She tells Alex he's making too much noise, and we see he's grabbed a piece of broken glass and ripped himself a new mouth. Brutal. With weird no-lips speech, he plays it back to her, but from his perspective, how whe wanted a woman his brother had, and he's beyond sick of hearing her talk about him. Madelyne perks up, noting how he's changed, and that she can work with it. She leaps into his arms, kissing him. He asks why her slaves don't just eat Greycrow, suspended by the Goblin Queen while the other Hellions fight elsewhere. She says she wants them to work for their food, referring to Nanny and Orphan Maker being attacked. She says she cursed them all with eternal hunger, and asks Greycrow if he knows why. He ignores her, and she says that it is unwise to pretend she doesn't exist. That it is her least favorite thing. She calls over slave Arclight and orders her to remove her own hand and eat it. She starts to, and John finally speaks. He says he remembers her, and Maddie says he shot her and stole her baby. She says her mind went to find a safe place, and when she came back, it wasn't the same. She says, Sinister made her like this in his lab, and they have to die in pain for anyone to see her as a real person. She commands arclight to eat him and walks off. Later, in her throne room (???), She tells Alex she's hurt they they built a home for all mutants, and forgot to invite her. She says they won't see it through the blood and horror, but she's hurt. She asks if he can see why she needs to throw his head at their feet, and he says yesh kwheen. She says first, she'll use all Sinister's clones to attack Krakoa, and only fools will argue she never existed. Elsewhere, Kwannonn stops the carnage and heads to find Madelyne and Alex with the rest of her team. Hellions #4 at the orphanage, Maddie speaks with Havok as she gets demon arms to secure him to the wall and starts a spell. She talks about where they are, and how what Sinister did there made the wall between them and hell super thin, and she can hear the demon hordes. She says the demons want to take the mutant cloned bodies and posses them on earth, gathering to watch their love bleed. Kwannon liberates the lat of her team. Maddie says she thinks demons call to Alex, too, and she never lost her hold on him. She first says one sight of her rentered him to mental shreds, but then says she can see someone else did it to him, but who? She gets earnest, asking what happened. Just then, she gets shot in the chest with an arrow. As she dies, she says not event he demons stay, only Alex. She fixes his mouth, and asks if he'll remember her, and she only wanted them to know she was a real girl. Havok blasts the building apart. Later, on Krakoa, he talks to his brother, Scott. Scott claims the council doesn't want to risk re-birthing her, since she was originally a clone of Jean. He says it doesn't matter, sorry it didn't work out. Alex screams that she was a real person who existed, Scott just walks away.
