At long last, we're finally getting the Murphyverse Harley Quinn series! With six issues spanning from October in to 2021, there's no way I was going to miss out on reviewing all of them as they premier. I'm posting this, in the first place, about a week after the first issue came out, due to a buys week, but my fervor for the issue still remains as bright. Here's an excerpt of what I thought: "Not to sound dramatic, but this is easily one of my favorite #1 issues of a comic series I have ever read. The team is absolutely brilliant, and reading it was nothing less than satisfying. Coming from DC Black Label, the creative team was able to take full advantage of the layout of the comic. It feels a touch short, which isn’t to say abrupt, I just really wish it had been longer! But in exchange, there is a plethora of extra material at the back."

Sketchtober Masterpost!10/27/2020
If I haven't mentioned it already, I am not what you might call a traditional artist. I've worked at it my whole life, tried every medium I can afford, but have never been able to get any better at drawing, in any way. Due to this, I am a massive fan of people who CAN do art like that, and I feel like I have a greater appreciation for the fine arts.
Traditionally, October is "Inktober" month, where artists from around the world challenge themselves to "a drawing a day," usually on pre-planned themes. Unfortunately, an artist I won't name here had a massive miscommunication with his legal representation after last year, and his lawyer tried to copyright the term Inktober for ONLY this artist to use. Needless to say, this put a bad taste in most of the art community's mouths, and most participants of the traditional Inktober are either sitting this year out, or calling it by something else. This year, I am participating in the Meghan Hetrick Patreon "Sketchtober," as she's calling it. It includes 24 dateless themes to draw or writer about, on your own schedule. I will be writing, of course, and hope to be able to stretch my creative fingers as I go about the theme challenges. Continue Reading to see my progress on the written Sketchtober!
This week, I'm pretty proud of the spotlights I've written. The first is a spotlight on AfroFuturism, as it appears in Johnnie Christmas' Tartarus. Then, to memorialize the final issue of Sex Criminals, I go off about the patriarchy a little and talk about how the series pushed back against that mentality. Finally, this week is the final issue of Batgirl, so I go over some favorite moments of Cecil Castellucci's run, and talk about my theories on what the future holds for Barbara Gordon.
In total, there are thirteen titles I'm reading and discussing. A gorgeous SEVEN are indie comics, which is a great sign, and one book for both the X of Swords and Death Metal events. Without further ado, Continue Reading to see what's up in comics this week!
Welcome to another week of comics! This week has another great spread going on, with 3 books from DC, five indie titles, and eight from Marvel, two of which are X of Swords X-Men books. Of those, there are two new beginnings to comics, a one-shot, and the 100th Spider-Woman comic ever released, Karla Pacheco's fifth of her ongoing series.
Spotlights will be plentiful this week, again! I'm discussing Argentinian-American comic writer and legend Fabien Nicieza and his surprisingly heft history in the industry, then I'll be talking about Faith, from Faithless II, and her complicated sexual orientation. Last, I'm spotlighting Jessica Drew, Spider-Woman herself, on the occasion of her 100th solo comic! Continue Reading for all this and more! Captain Marvel #22 Review and Discussion10/15/2020 Excerpt: "I can see where this issue fits perfectly into the story of Carol Danvers. Post-Kelly Sue-era, Captain Marvel really got back up and running for me, personally, with Margaret Stohl’s Life of Captain Marvel in 2017. The mini-series reworked Carol’s origins, taking away the necessity of a man being involved, and giving her entire power-set more legitimacy. This Thompson run started immediately after that, taking the news or her half-Kree origin and giving it the same ugly spotlight our modern society realistically, and unfortunately, would have done. Thompson has taken Carol in an empowering arc since then, giving her relatable villains, heart-warming friendships, and having her deal with true Super-Hero problems like personhood separate from her heroism, dealing with the idea of failure on many levels, and where to draw the line of right and wrong." I'm pulling the same number of releases this week as last, with eighteen total books. I'm happy to say I'm trying out five new indie titles, to go along with five from DC, two other indies, three for the X of Swords event, and two other Marvel comics. All in all, a hefty week, but a very exciting one.
Since there are three Marvel comics that fit in to the X of Swords X-Men event, I've made them their own section so the discussions can all be together, in reading order of the issues. Hopefully this will make following along with the event a bit easier, or as I said last week, you can always pick up the collected edition towards the end of January, 2021. The five new indie titles are all experimental, coming from Dynamite, Aftershock, Vault, Oni Press, and Dark Horse Comics. The only one with a creative team I'm familiar with is Gerard Way's Killjoys original series follow-up, National Anthem. Out of the rest, I definitely imagine a few of them sticking around. Due to life complications, I'm only doing one spotlight this week, on female comic artist Carmen Carnero! She's made quite the name for her in the past few years, and I'm excited to tell you more! Out of a week of so many releases that were so good, I had a hard time deciding what to use for my picks of the week. A few stood out so strong in excellence that I wrote about them practically as I read the issue, and that might show with the wordiness. But everything was so great this week, I had to say more, so there's a section at the end with five MORE (very very short) reviews on more comics!
The full reviews this week go to Black Widow #2, Spy Island #2, We Only Find Them When They're Dead #2, Marauders #13, and Horizon Zero Dawn #3! You'll have to click through to see what the others are about, so Continue Reading for more! Black Widow (2020) #2 Review/Discussion10/8/2020
This is a longer week for comics by just a bit, with a total of eighteen pulls! Amazingly, in my opinion, exactly half are independent publishers, including Image, BOOM!, Dynamite, Titan, Aftershock, and Dark Horse Comics. I think that covers most the major indie publishers, missing maybe just IDW and one or two big players in the game.
I have all three spotlights ready to go this week! For the spotlight on people of color in comics, I'm discussing award-winning writer and educator Eve L. Ewing and her Champions book, starring a few highly representative teenage heroes. For queer topics in comics, I'm back with Far Sector, this time talking about main character Jo's omnisexuality! And last, for the spotlight on women in comics, I go over Adventureman's Claire Temple and her impressive sisters! Girl power, always and forever. This week also features what I'm going to call my Big Week of Big Books (suggestions welcome), after the continual plethora side-by-side favorites and mostly indie releases--Inkblot, Spy Island, Lonely Receiver, We Only Find Them When They're Dead, Black Widow, and Horizon Zero Dawn have been coming out on the same days, and it makes for an exciting week of reads!
