I swear, I had every intention to do my usual long-form comic book post this week. Life got in the way, and I actually kind of like trying it a different way. Maybe it’ll keep me from getting stale. Theres a lot of books again this week, although mostly Marvel issues. In fact, so far Marvel has kicked off 2020 by being the heaviest releaser of comics, far and beyond other publishers. It’s great, because I clearly like Marvel c but I really feel like I’m missing a little differentiation brought to you by indie comics. In any case, these are my recommended comics this week! It’s a number of first issues and one-shots, as well as some just plain good reads. Continue Reading for this weeks comics!

New Comics Pull List, January 22nd, 20201/21/2020 You might think, given a three-day weekend, that I would be long finished by now with my standard weekly comics pull list. Seeing as it's Tuesday and I'm only just starting, you'd be wrong.
If I had to make an excuse, I guess I'd say it's because my birthday also took place over the long weekend, so I spent a lot of time....doing that. So, with my lack of drive to see this week's post completed as usual. I'm going to try something a little different. Instead of individually writing out each book's solicitation an my response to it, I'll do this week's pulls en mass for speed's sake. This is totally new and different for me, so things might get weird. Continue Reading to see how I do! A Note on FEMALE FURIES1/14/2020 As a woman who reads comics, this industry doesn't revolve around people like me as their target audience. Which is something women are sadly used to--while we're welcome in the community, women are often seen as second-class comic nerds, as if our gender determines what our interests should be, and how much of those interests we're allowed to know about. Clearly, this isn't the reality, and tons of women of all ages are interested and work/live their lives in comics., regardless of the male domination. This means that when something DOES get actively targeted towards female comic readers, it feels like a gift from the creators made just for us. To clarify, I'm talking about traditional comics themes and characters, but written to actively include female readers in the target audience. One recent example of this is the limited series, Female Furies. It was set up for success among female "sweaties" like me from the start: female driven creative team, female leads, accurate female relationships, recognizable metaphors for our own society, and best of all--it was set up with the backdrop of classic DC comics characters and stories (Hello, Apokalips). In fact, it even includes the original Jack Kirby source material from the old-school Mister Miracle and New Gods books in the back of the collected edition. Needless to say, I tore through the volume in an afternoon, and it left me with chills. I loved it endlessly and want to breathe it's spirit into every comic reader who will listen. But somehow, even through all of this, female Furies is misunderstood. Continue Reading to learn what I mean by that, and why Female Furies is such a perfect battle cry to women everywhere. HARLEEN #3 REVIEW! (FINALE)1/13/2020
It's a short week for comics! Short is relative, I suppose, and for what my lists have been recently, this is definitely short. It's also very Marvel heavy--of the seven books I'm reading this week, four are Marvel, one is DC, one Dynamite, and one Image. Not the variety I'd normally like to have in my reading material, but when the list is so small, the variety will be narrow as well. That isn't to say there's nothing good coming out this week at all! This week marks the first issue of Marvel's third Gamerverse book for Spider-Man, Black Cat Strikes. I'm a big fan of Black Cat, so this series will hopefully fill a long-empty hole where my female Marvel anti-heroes should live. Additionally, this week has the next issue of Undiscovered Country, which has caused quite a stir even on just it's third issue, and two other favorites from my pull list: Revenge of the Cosmic Ghost Rider and Vampirella/Red Sonja (check out the Babs Tarr variant to the left!). It's a smaller, but definitely fun week in comics! Continue Reading to see what's good this week! PS--Extra content at the very end, don't miss out! PPS-- the 19th is my birthday! I don't expect you to do anything with this information. I don't want to put the wagon before the horse, but this year has started off pretty good for me. I feel like I've gotten ahead of my life enough after the holidays finally to relax a little on the weekends and enjoy my hobbies. Which is a good thing, because comics are getting going full steam ahead! This week brings me thirteen new books, so a pretty solid start to the year.
