This page is a new Work in Progress, so changes will be made as I go along! And mind the typos, this is mostly unedited.
Satana is the first character I'm doing a Yancy Street Special on (this will be for October 2022) who I'm not already pretty familiar with going in to the process. She's from a distinct era of Marvel comics, and oddly enough, her creation was something they were very open about, to the point of writing the discussion of her character creation out as a short story in one of their comics. Since then, Satana has died, returned, and worn a handful of very different character designs, as well as fairly different personalities, even. My goal with this particular project is to try and identify a core answer to who Satana canonically is, regardless of the era, design, etc. Happy reading! Jessica Cruz (DC) Reading List!9/2/2022 SEPTEMBER 2nd 2022 UPDATE: Summary of Events complete through Jess' run as Power Ring! Reading List updated through current timeline! Hear about Jessica in the coming September 2022 Yancy Street Special! Jessica Cruz is a character I consider myself lucky for catching on to when I did. 2016's Rebirth at DC realigned a lot of comics and the characters who star in them, including Green Lanterns, which starred Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. Simon first appeared as an anti-hero in 2012, and Jessica was the next-made Lantern. Her story starts as her being possessed by the character Volthoom, who made her his new Power Ring. In time, Jessica earns the title of Green Lantern by Sacrificing herself to stop Volthoom, and joins the Justice League. In Rebirth, she and Simon were teammates by the order of Hal Jordan, and she dated Wally West for a time. While she hasn't been in the comics so much recently, I have high hopes for Jessica Cruz's future in comics! Regular reader of SSG may have noticed I didn't publish a new comic Pull List for this week or the last, these middle weeks of November. While one was an unusually short week of comic pulls for me personally, and the other was surely worthy, the whole world was a bit taken by the happenings of American politics, for the past few weeks or so. Instead, to distract from the wishy-washy news cycle, I worked on my Madelyne Pryor complete appearance reading order! Since her appearances are much fewer in numbers than that of Illyana Rasputin's Magik, who I did something similar on before, I was able to actually read all the issues on the list. This ended up with me adding brief summaries of the relevant events of each issue, to give context for anyone looking to learn more about the Goblin Queen. I've edited the notes I took while reading as much as possible, but please forgive any discrepancies or errors I might have missed. My over-eager enthusiasm for Madelyne Pryor is matched by my desire to get more people to fall in love with her character, too. Additionally, while most issues summarize just Maddie's role, a few include more in-depth explanation of the whole issue's events. Continue Reading for the reading order and history of Madelyne Pryor! COMPLETE as of July 2021, to be occasionally updated for clarity. UPDATE OCTOBER '21: Clea's first comic appearance in 3 years! Scroll all the way to the bottom for this delightful update on her character. Key issue list now included at the top! Clea is one of the harder characters to do a reading list about, the way that I do them. With characters like Hellcat, Carol Danvers, and Angela, there are at least a few options of where to start, or anchor points in their history to read around, and get familiar with each era a little at a time. Patsy spent a long time as friend of the Avengers before even becoming Hellcat, then spent time with Defenders, got married, died, came back, and had a few definitive solo series' through the decades. Carol has a number of Hero names to read up on, plus a period of depowerment, and what came before the triggering of her Kree genetics. With Clea, she doesn't have any moments pulled out just for her, really, as every issue she's ever been in has been for the sake of someone else--usually Stephen Strange. Her powerset, her power-levels, even her identity wasn't clarified for decades, and all after her having been nameless for her first dozen or so appearances. But she was written to be delightfully intriguing; a spark of youthful energy in the twisted, aging, LSD-laced pages of the somber and responsible Doctor Stephen Strange. This doesn't make her any less interesting--in fact, it just makes me all the more certain we need a solid, definitive SOMETHING for Clea, and I won't deny I'd love to be given that chance, especially after having spent so much time--and continuing to spend ever-more time--reading up on all her appearances. The Read List that follows is a work in progress, as most of my lists always are. Since Clea doesn't have a whole lot of well-known anchor points in her history to work off of, I'm sticking with the traditional way of reading her comics--chronologically. Therefore, this list will take a while to get to anything Modern, though I have read a good bit of her modern appearances. Because I'm sticking with chronological, this time, if there's anything more towards the bottom you want to know about--send me an email! I'd love to do some reading research for you, and update it on Clea's list at the same time. Final note! This is also a work in progress in terms of editing. My notes as I read are a mess, usually, and I often forget to go back and clean it up. I'll do what I can as I go, but a lot is just going to be missed. I stick mostly to just the events in the issue that are directly relevant to the character in question, but again, hit me up if you need clarification on anything! Continue Reading for the complete appearances of Marvel's Clea! WAVE Pearl Pangan Appearances List!1/30/2021 Wave is a newer character, and the first official Filipino superhero! I remember the day I brought War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas home. I wanted to read it because my partner is Filipino and we try to support as much Asian culture in pop culture as we can. I read the issue before him, and made sure not to say anything about Wave when she popped up, but I knew he'd love it. When he was finally reading it, I'll never forget the moment he stopped and read the lines, "Wave. Pearl Pangan, from Cebu City in the Philippines". He cried out that there's a Filipino hero, finally! Then a moment later, he looked up at me, tears in his eyes. "She's from Cebu, where my family lives." No one can witness a moment like this and not understand the importance of representation in all forms of media. Without further ado, here are the full appearances of Wave, Pearl Pangan, the first Filipino Superhero! Update #1: Issue-by-issue summaries have entries through Mister Miracle (v.1) #15! Continue Reading! Contrary to how it may look, Barda was actually the first character I did when I started these read lists, alongside Angela (Image/Marvel). Why aren't those the first two uploaded? I started those lists (gasp) handwritten. When I started the other lists, I had already started using an online, multi-device note-taking app, so the notebook was forgotten. Now that I'm uploading the rest of my lists, it's time to back and update Barda's. This is the best list I could come up with without having already read every issue. Oddly, there aren't many resources at all for other Barda reading lists, and the ones that do exist are missing pieces, haven't been updated, or focus on a Barda from a different Earth. In making this list, I've combined a few partial lists, filled in some spaces I knew were missing, and guessed for only a handful of likely no-longer-canon appearances. I'll get around to typing up my previously written notes soon, I hope, but the reading list itself is complete! Continue Reading to follow Big Barda's history, and always remember Barda Is! |
