Happy November! I can hardly believe the year is coming to an end already. Needless to say, it's been a weird and wild one.
This week's comics are absolutely stellar, with only three DC, nine Marvel, and four independent publisher releases. Of those, two are from X of Swords, three are by Kelly Thompson, and two are from Black Label. I've done another trio of spotlights this week, showing off comic book representation! For the spotlight on people of color in comics, I'm discussing Grag Pak's Agents of Atlas, the first all-Asian superhero team! Then, after the reveal of Kate Pryde's bisexuality a few issues of Marauders ago, I'm discussing the sexuality of the X-Men, and how that changes through the years. Finally, with her three upstanding comic releases this week, I talk about writer Kelly Thompson, and how she chooses to be fresh with her characters without tearing them down or tormenting them first--something very common (and usually masculinity driven) in cape comics. Without further ado, Continue Reading for more comics talk!

Captain Marvel #22 Review and Discussion10/15/2020 Excerpt: "I can see where this issue fits perfectly into the story of Carol Danvers. Post-Kelly Sue-era, Captain Marvel really got back up and running for me, personally, with Margaret Stohl’s Life of Captain Marvel in 2017. The mini-series reworked Carol’s origins, taking away the necessity of a man being involved, and giving her entire power-set more legitimacy. This Thompson run started immediately after that, taking the news or her half-Kree origin and giving it the same ugly spotlight our modern society realistically, and unfortunately, would have done. Thompson has taken Carol in an empowering arc since then, giving her relatable villains, heart-warming friendships, and having her deal with true Super-Hero problems like personhood separate from her heroism, dealing with the idea of failure on many levels, and where to draw the line of right and wrong." I'm pulling the same number of releases this week as last, with eighteen total books. I'm happy to say I'm trying out five new indie titles, to go along with five from DC, two other indies, three for the X of Swords event, and two other Marvel comics. All in all, a hefty week, but a very exciting one.
Since there are three Marvel comics that fit in to the X of Swords X-Men event, I've made them their own section so the discussions can all be together, in reading order of the issues. Hopefully this will make following along with the event a bit easier, or as I said last week, you can always pick up the collected edition towards the end of January, 2021. The five new indie titles are all experimental, coming from Dynamite, Aftershock, Vault, Oni Press, and Dark Horse Comics. The only one with a creative team I'm familiar with is Gerard Way's Killjoys original series follow-up, National Anthem. Out of the rest, I definitely imagine a few of them sticking around. Due to life complications, I'm only doing one spotlight this week, on female comic artist Carmen Carnero! She's made quite the name for her in the past few years, and I'm excited to tell you more! I refuse to hide in shame when I admit that three of my top-five picks this week are technically Dawn of X books. What can I say? Johnathon Hickman knows how to put together a universe.
X-Force, Marauders, and Empyre: X-Men are mt three mutant-based picks, leaving the other slots to this week's Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel. It also doesn't escape me how four fifths of this list are Marvel properties, but that is also easy to explain. Marvel's theory of "the more, the merrier" that they've had in recent years has excellent payoff, as far as I can see. There's something for everyone, no doubt about that. But let's not get too caught up in which publisher may or may not be better than others. When it comes down to it, Marvel and DC are both massive conglomerates that care only about their bottom dollar and give very little effort in terms of creator benefits. Dark sides of the industry aside, this was a pretty good week for comics! I'll admit that many of the other issues faltered for me, and many felt unimportant or like filler. These five, however, were the obvious choices that stood out for me in story, art, and overall quality, Continue Reading to find out more about my top picks from the week! WARNING: SPOILERS!
It's another banger of a comics week, with books of all kinds! At Marvel, the EMPYRE event wages on, leaving both excellence and stupidity in it's wake; plus X-books, some spiders, and a few unjustly digital-first released books finally getting their print release. DC has two doomed books, Mariko Tamaki's second issue of WONDER WOMAN, and more METAL! The indie stack is fairly well represented, with a new #1, Matt Fraction and the Dodsons' ADVENTUREMAN, and more Image books from Christopher Priest!
You may note I didn't do a "pick list" for last week. Usually I try to do them on Thursday, after binging the weekly comics by that afternoon. This week, however, I went on a road-trip Thursday instead! We went to the Bay Area for toy and comic book hunting, and I am pleased to report we found some INCREDIBLE collection pieces! I'll be writing somewhat about those eventually, but for now, onto the coming week's pulls! Continue Reading to see all the comics goodies I have picked out this week! Top-5 Comic Pick List from 7/29/207/30/2020
This week's comics were a breeze to get through, for the most part. It was a smaller week, based on my average pull list numbers. While some books, like X-Men #10, surprised me with not being quite as inspiring as I expected, it left room for the others to shine ever brighter.
This week's top 5 comics picks ended up being, in no particular order, Cable #2, X-Factor #1, Captain Marvel #18, Vampirella/Red Sonja #9, and of course, Wonder Woman #759. I'm particularly proud that four out of the five titles are written by women, as well (Cable being the exception)! Some spoilers here, so read at your own discretion! It's a good time to be a nerd, because the comics industry is evolving in new ways all the time, and I'm just thrilled to be here. Continue Reading for the run-down on my picks of the last week! It has been a minute, hasn't it?
It feels diminutive to try and list all the goings-on of the world and my life in the past 6-months or so, so I'm not going to try and do that here. I might make a long-winded general blog post later, but don't wait for that one. World news is constantly updating, so it may be some time before I figure out how to address these situations. This is my first post since February, and I've just finished redesigning the layout of the site, as well! I'm changing up the format of my posts a little, which I hope will make sense, and also changing the format of the weekly Pull lists. I want to be sure to include and point out the weekly books of great representation. Be it the creative team or subject matter, representation of all people belongs in comics. To further drive this point, I will be including in my pull lists Spotlights on the books that have quality real-world representation in some way. On that note, this also happens to be an EXCELLENT week to start reading new comics--I've got FIVE series premiers picked out and a few more "jumping on points" for ongoing books, all of which make great starting points for new readers! NEW COMICS MEGA-WEEK! November 20th, 201911/17/2019 Holy pull-list Batman! The year is finishing off STRONG for comics, as I have a massive NINETEEN issues I'm reading! Thank goodness Thanksgiving "break" is coming up, and I'll have a few extra days off from work to catch up on my reading. All of these issues coming out this week are set to be totally stellar, too. Of the 19, three are one-shots, a Deadpool #1, the final issue of Absolute Carnage, a landmark Captain Marvel issue, and one of Tom King's last ever on Batman. Amazing stuff, as we've been seeing a LOT of recently. It makes me look forward to what the future of comics has to bring, and makes me want to share the brilliant stories and art I see in them with anyone who'll listen. Comics are a world I love, and I'm thrilled to share it with others. Continue Reading for the whole lot of this week's comics! I can't believe we're already halfway through October! The season of spook has begun, as shown on my comics list this week with the continuation of three issues from Marvel's current horror event: Absolute Carnage #3, Absolute Carnage: Avengers #1, and Absolute Carnage: Scream #3. Those three are out of the twelve total titles I'm talking about this week. Will I be able to keep this up? If I end up dropping any of these, I guess we know the answer to that. As usual, each book's solicitation will be included for a basic rundown from the publisher. There's a lot of great stuff happening in comics, all the time, so I'm listing some issues coming out this week that I don't read, but are well loved and enjoyed by others, at the end. There's also a lot of new titles starting up this fall and winter, and great starting points for ongoing ones. Meanwhile, Continue Reading for more comics talk! New Comics September 11th, 20199/9/2019 In writing out my pull list for the week, it occurs to me how many limited series I read. This week, 4 of the seven titles I'll be picking up are limited. It makes me wonder, is it me liking limited series' or is it publishers putting more of them out? Either way, these are the issues I'll personally be reading this week. It's an exciting week of women-based comics, space adventures, and epic tales. Be sure to stop by your local comic book shop to get this week's books! Continue reading for my full recommendations!
