This is such a fun week for comics and comic media, with movie premiers, show finales, brilliant independent comic book series', and a cautious sense of excitement for next week's big (and hopefully not as chaotic as Anime Expo) San Diego Comic Con!
As usual we kick it off this week with the News (0:04:38), which includes Echo (Disney+)Show updates, a new Punchline (DC) comics series, the RWBY/Justice League animated movie, leaks for both Loki Season 2 and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a director for the fourth Captain America movie, and some light news on what to expect at San Diego Comic Con 2022--which we'll preface more in-depth on the next episode! Last week's Comic Book Picks (0:21:22) was actually super DC-Heavy, for once, with no Marvel comics on my list at all! My picks of the week would be Astronaut Down #2 (Aftershock), Liam Sharp's Starhenge #1 (Image), and Poison Ivy #2 (DC); I continue to adore Pamela Isley, and refuse to see her as the bad guy. The two indies of that trio are wildly creative, and I honestly can't recommend them enough. We're in what I don't hesitate to call a Golden Era of Indie(ish) Comics! This week's Comic Book Pulls (0:36:04), in reverse, is absent of DC for my list, but includes some seriously heavy duty, amazing variant covers coming from Marvel--be sure to check out all the available covers of this week's New Mutants, A.X.E.: Eve of Judgment, X-Men: Hellfire Gala, Captain Marvel, and Immortal X-Men. Some of my favorite comic artists are included among those stunners, plus one truly awesome homage variant! And that's not even to mention the many incredible indie/creator owned comics premiering and continuing this week, as well. Remember what I just said about a Golden Age of Indies? Mhmm. Getting into other media, coverage of Ms Marvel (Disney+)episode 5 (0:49:07), titled Time and Again, includes theories about the finale, carefully hopeful expectations, and of course, all the comic book references from the penultimate episode. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode 10 (0:58:43), titled A Quality of Mercy, was a fantastic finale for the show's first season, giving us time travel, life lessons, Original Series references, and a cocky young James Tiberius Kirk! I don't know when season 2 arrives, but I am SO ready! Finally, of course I'm including my Thor: Love and Thunder Spoiler Free Review (1:11:05) in this episode, but be warned, because it's quite short, and immediately followed by the Spoiler Review! I had a lot of fun making this one, because it includes comic book references, Norse mythology, Easter eggs, connections to the greater MCU, the music, the end credits scenes explained, and theorizing for the future of the characters! As promised, the Love and Thunder basic plot overview: https://www.ign.com/articles/thor-love-thunder-ending-explained-post-credits-scene The Collider article on the movie's music: https://collider.com/thor-love-and-thunder-guns-n-roses-influence/ Make sure you're back next week for coverage on the Ms Marvel finale, the new comic book picks and pulls for the week, a Hellfire Gala wrap-up for Marvel, pre-SDCC (July 21-24), and maybe even October's big-two comic book solicitation! Till then, stay hydrated, do some light stretches in the morning, and support your local comic shops! It's a short episode this week, but worry not! I have a lot planned for the immediate future of the podcast and website.
The NEWS 09:57: circling mainly around Crunchyroll's Dragon Ball Super: Super Heroes release announcement! See the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5CIs0jDqC8&ab_channel=CrunchyrollCollection I have three PICKS 18:07 for last week's comics: all indie, all stupendous, all leaving me wanting more! They are 8 Billion Genies #1, Grim #1, and Immortal Red Sonja #2. So much to love and to talk about in just those issues! This week's comic book PULLS 35:07 include some of my favorite current Indie comics, a couple final issues, and Marvel's Voices: Identity #1, celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander creators and characters! We wrap up with Young Justice S04E22 45:33 titled, Rescue and Search. Conner's fate has been discovered, but can anyone do anything to help? I'll be back sooner than you think! With new Mutants #25 FINALLY (allegedly) being released this week, I'll be posting my Intro to Madelyne Pryor--the Goblin Queen--episode by Friday! Also be sure to check out my previous Special Edition Episode on Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik! Other than that special, I'll be back for a regular episode this coming Monday the 23rd, talking New Comic releases, Young Justice ep.23, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and whatever happens in the news, I'll have it covered here! We start as usual with the NEWS 0:07:37, beginning with a tribute to George Perez, who passed this week at age 67 after a lifelong career making waves in the industry. The Rumors 21:05 covers those Ezra Miller replacement theories, before going into Coming Soon 26:38! Here we cover Doctor Who's 14th Doctor announcement, Umbrella Academy Season 3 on Netflix and Volume 4 of the comic, the Red Sonja project, and Ahsoka project updates. That leaves us with Trailers 36:27, this week focusing on another for the upcoming Obi Wan Kenobi show on Disney+! We have a short list of PICKS 38:39 again this week, with the pick of the week being Giant Size X-Men: Thunderbird #1! Check out the link below to see more information on the choices of colors in John Proudstar's new look. This is followed by a brief Free Comic Book Day Wrap-Up 45:2, covering what came from the Big Two, and that cute Avatar comic. This week's comic PULLS 50:08 are technically already out, but I still wanted to include my week's pull list, and there's a lot of fun stuff out! As for other media, first is the MOON KNIGHT FINALE 52:26, followed by YOUNG JUSTICE S04E21 59:33, where another hero is lost. Finally, my Multiverse of Madness SPOILER-FREE REACTION 1:04:52 comes quickly before the full SPOILER review 1:07:04! I admit, I am quite critical, but even I had moments I really, really liked. It's the super-sized Eternals movie review podcast! But first, we have to go over the weekly comic book pull list real quick (at 0:08:44), then onto the good stuff!
The Eternals discussion begins at 0:27:22 with that opening titles crawl, explaining the six singularities, the dawn of creation, and then Arishem and the Celestials both in the comics and as they are set up in the movie. Ego, the Living Planet, and his connections to the Celestials are brought into the discussion at 0:35:00, before starting the basic plot overview at 0:38:01. This section includes the most basic of plot explanations, tied up with all kinds of comics history, Easter eggs, MCU translations, some theories, and more, all the way to the ending. With the plot covered, it's on to the major and minor changes made from the comics to the MCU at 0:52:03, including retro and modern Eternals history. Then I have an in-depth look at each of the MCU versions of these Characters at 0:55:43, covering all ten Eternals and Dane Whitman, and comparing them to their comic counterparts. Finally, noteworthy moments in the movie are at 01:07:10, followed by my favorite bits of humor at 1:14:03. After a brief discussion of the movie's sometimes surprising music at 1:18:51, the episode wraps up with what to expect next for the MCU, spinning out of the events of this movie at 01:21:13. Whew, I think that was it! Let me know what you thought of the movie and give me some feedback on what worked or not in my discussion! I'll be back next for episode 41B on Friday (or Saturday) November 12/13, discussing the week's comic book pick list, possibly all that DCTV I'm behind on, more than likely more thoughts on Eternals, and anything relevant that hits the news! Have a great week, stay sweaty, and do good. Accidental hour long episode! What can I say? There's a lot to get sweaty about!
This week's New Comic Book Day big episode for big nerds covers releases from Feb. 9th and 10th, 2021, including Future State's Justice League and Superwoman, Reign of X's Excalibur and X-Factor, King in Black Daredevil, Eternals, and then some indie favorites. After the week of announcements, news, and theorizing that we've had, I had to talk about some pop culture news, too! Including MODOK series news, more Falcon and the Winter Soldier thoughts, the remaining Marvel Women's History Month comics, DC's announcement of an Asian Superhero anthology, a certain Star Wars firing, SnyderCut and Captain Marvel 2 news, and a brief discussion of comic book romances for Valentine's Day! My next episode will be 5A on Monday, Feb. 15th, talking about this week's new WandaVision episode, other comics in media, and more! It's SUCH a good time to be a nerd. See you Monday, and Happy Lunar New Year!
Complete Podcast Notes are included after the cut, Continue Reading!
This is the only review I wrote for the week of February 2nd-3rd's releases, and Luna was easily my pick of the week across all publishers. For reasons I talk about in the review, I was completely blown away, and can't stress enough how much I'm looking forward to the rest of this series. High-Concept stories are often difficult to pull off in comics, and Llovet is off to a remarkable start. I can't recommend Luna enough! In other news, expect some mild restructuring in the way I do my posts here. As you probably know, I recently started a podcast version of this very blog, called Sensational She-Geek Live from Yancy Street (Yancy St. being a reference to the location of the Fantastic Four's headquarters, the Baxter Building). While writing has been a passion of mine my whole life, and this blog has been an excellent outlet for that, I've now realized that working on the podcast is more manageable for my free time. Where a blog post might take several days to write up, the podcast comes together from the past several days' thoughts on comics and comics culture, can be organized in under an hour, recorded in the same time, then posted in another hour. To sum up: It's easier, more natural to create, and has far more views than my standard blog post. So, I'm letting the blog writing take back seat so I can focus more on the blog, and on my own personal writing projects. Let me know what you think! In the meantime, Continue Reading for the discussion on Luna #1!
I'm trying something slightly different, this week, for my "pick list." Following my instincs about what I actually felt like talking about, I wrote EIGHT different discussions on comics from this week. Granted, two are stories from the same anthology issue, but still. They all deserved to be discussed, for some reason or another, so check them out, plus a final paragraph on some more general thoughts I had, post-reading this week:
Future State Aquaman #1 We Only Find Them When They're Dead #5 Excalibur #17--Kwannon and Betsy! Captain Marvel #25 Batman: Black and White #2 King/Gerads A story Batman: Black and White #2 Campbell B story The Eighth Immortal #1 Stake #1 Final Thoughts for the Week Don't forget to check out my podcast, Sensational She Geek Live from Yancy Street! The first two episodes are already up! Here's the link for Apple Podcasts, and here it is for the hosting site. Let me know what you think! Continue Reading for the whole blog post! It's been a long couple of weeks, hasn't it? Between pandemic and politics, there seems to be a never-ending stream of news and updates to keep up with, and most of it is no bueno. I've been a bit AWOL on my own site because of it, which I don't feel great about, admittedly. But the world continues to turn whether I update or not, even if that world is too-often at odds with itself. This week, albeit a very small comic book week for me personally, featured a comic that pulled me out of my funk of refreshing Twitter trends and reading all about the unfortunate state of American politics, and that was Excalibur #14. Written by Tini Howard with art by Phil Noto, Excalibur was shining beacon of beautiful things to enjoy, paired with thoughtful plotting that leaves the reader with plenty to mull over. Continue Reading for my review and discussion of my pick of the week: Excalibur #14! Keep an eye out for the line marking where spoilers start! To absolutely no one's surprise, Black Widow continues to amaze. The best, in my opinion, of writer Kelly Thompson's three comic releases this week, I can't resist discussing the many fantastic aspects of this team's monthly efforts. You can find my review for the first issue here, and the second issue here, if you care about reading those before this. Continue Reading for the third installment discussion! This one just gets better and better. As usual, spoilers ahead!

As a major fan of Guerrilla Games' Horizon Zero Dawn video game, it was thrilling to hear that a comic based on it was in the works! Set in the amazing setting of the game, the HZD comic is meant to continue the story of the game's alternate future world, expanding on the story while still holding true to what made it such a success int he first place. If you're unfamiliar with the world of the Horizon Zero Dawn game this comic is based off of, don't sweat it! There's plenty of filler pages to give the reader all the pertinent information about this incredible world and its well thought out societies. It wasn't until the Free Comic Book Day bonus "zero issue" that I discovered this whole series is written by one of the writers from the original HZD game, Anne Toole. Toole was one member on a female-heavy team of story writers and world builders in charge of building the story and world of the game. I have full confidence in her ability to not only replicate the unique qualities of the HZD world, but to translate that elegantly into comic form. On the artistic side, the interiors of this series are handled by Ann Maulina. Maulina is an artist from Indonesia who specializes in game design and web comics, which makes her a perfect fit for this comic. With Anne Toole and Ann Maulina backing up an incredible already established universe, this is one mini-series you won't want to miss. In-article links are provided beyond the cut for navigation, as well as some fun reference pictures, so Continue Reading for the ongoing review! As this is a full review, SPOILERS AHEAD! Captain Marvel #22 Review and Discussion10/15/2020 Excerpt: "I can see where this issue fits perfectly into the story of Carol Danvers. Post-Kelly Sue-era, Captain Marvel really got back up and running for me, personally, with Margaret Stohl’s Life of Captain Marvel in 2017. The mini-series reworked Carol’s origins, taking away the necessity of a man being involved, and giving her entire power-set more legitimacy. This Thompson run started immediately after that, taking the news or her half-Kree origin and giving it the same ugly spotlight our modern society realistically, and unfortunately, would have done. Thompson has taken Carol in an empowering arc since then, giving her relatable villains, heart-warming friendships, and having her deal with true Super-Hero problems like personhood separate from her heroism, dealing with the idea of failure on many levels, and where to draw the line of right and wrong." CONTINUE READING for details on the events of Captain Marvel #22, and more thoughtful discussion! Spoilers will be included! Black Widow (2020) #2 Review/Discussion10/8/2020
Immortal She-Hulk #1 REVIEW9/24/2020 Jennifer Walter's She-Hulk is an important character to me, for a number of reasons. She's smart, educated, and willing to stand up for whats right even if it means making some enemies along the way. She's clever, beautiful, sassy, and a ton of fun in general. But she also has a history of trauma, anger issues, and repressed emotion. She's dealt with her personal problems, time and time again, and never asked for help from anyone.
When people say they want strong women in comics, they don't mean brute strength MMA fighters. They mean well-developed, realistic, rounded, and believable women. Even the strongest of us have moments of weakness, and Jen truly is the strongest among women. Continue Reading to learn why I loved this single issue so well, and what it means for Jen Walters and She-Hulk. An Unkindness of Ravens #1 REVIEW9/24/2020 An Unkindess of Ravens #1 by Dan Panosian and drawn by Marianna Ignazzi, colored by Fabiana Mascolo came out this week, September 23rd. Its a story that follows high-school aged witches in a small eastern seaboard town, and promises to be a combination of everyone's favorite witch and high school dramas. Continue Reading to see what made this first issue so great!
I feel so dumb for not knowing Cecil Castellucci was the current writer on Batgirl! And I LOVE Barbara Gordon. She gets a lot of shit from male readers, but she's like many of us women reading comics--trying to make her mark in man's industry. But it's been a long time since I read Batgirl regularly, which I'll explain again in this post, under the review for issue #47.
This is an ongoing series still, so I'll be reviewing the final issues as they come out! Continue Reading to see what I've already got covered, and find out a little about this run of Batgirl! Giant-Size X-Men: Storm REVIEW!9/20/2020
This is another review I write a number of weeks ago, but find myself going back to again and again as an example of modern comic book excellence. I've said it before on this site: I LOVE to talk about comics when I can pick through them, pointing out the various literary devices and artistic strengths. I get SWEATY about comics like that, and thanks to hearty efforts from every member of the creative team, X-Men #11 is easily going down as one of my favorite single-issues this year. I've touched this review up from when I originally wrote it as part of my week #28 Pick List, so there will be minor differences to that version. Continue Reading to see what made this issue so fantastic! X-Men #11 was written by Johnathon Hickman, with art by Leinil Francis Yu, and colors by Sunny Gho. I originally wrote this review as part of my comics Pick List from week #29. It was one of about six premier issues that came out that week, and stood out among the twenty-four comics pulls so bright that I wrote an extended review on it for that week's picks. I've gone back to that review a few times already, and as Black Widow continues to get positive buzz, I feel like I should give this issue its due spotlight. Among other reasons, this series premier is helmed by three women, all of whom more than pull their weight in making the issue a supreme success! Continue Reading for my full review of Black Widow #1 by Kelly Thompson, drawn by Elena Casagrande, with colors by Jordie Bellaire!

In my opinion, Empyre: X-Men has been far and beyond better than the main Empyre event, or any of the other tie-ins. This might be because the series is co-written by ALL of the Dawn of X writers at Marvel, who in turn were picked by Head of X Johnathon Hickman to help build his new world for the mutants. Since the series is still coming out, here are the release dates of each issue: #1 July 22nd, Jonathan Hickman and Tini Howard, art by Matteo Buffagni #2 August 5th, Gerry Duggan, Ben Percy, and Leah Williams, art by Lucas Werneck #3 August 12th, Ed Brisson, Vita Ayala, and Zeb Wells, art by Andrea Broccardo #4 August 19th, Jonathan Hickman, art by Jorge Molina And just for fun, here's a breakdown for the writers on this series, and what they normally write for Dawn of X: Johnathon Hickman: X-Men, New Mutants Tini Howard: Excalibur Gerry Duggan: Cable, Marauders Benjamin Percy: Wolverine, X-Force Leah Williams: X-Factor Ed Brisson: New Mutants Vita Ayala: Marauders Zeb Wells: Hellions Continue Reading for the full reviews on each of the four parts! SPOILERS AHEAD!
I've been saying it for ages, and even wrote it on this site at one point: Wonder Woman needs a female writer, and I'll add it to my pull list when that happens.
Ladies and germs, the day has finally come! On July 29th, DC released Wonder Woman #759, the first issue to be written in a run by Mariko Tamaki. Joyfully, I'm familiar with Tamaki's writing from HULK/She-Hulk at Marvel. She's also known for DC's Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass and Supergirl: Being Super with Joelle Jones, plus a number of other comics and graphic novels. To say that I was excited going in would be an understatement, as saying I'm happy with how it turned out would be. I loved this first issue so much, I say up last night with notes about WHY it was so good spiraling though my brain, and writing it all out before bed. With a few additions, continue reading for my full review of Wonder Woman #759 by Mariko Tamaki, with art by Mikel Janin and colors by Jordie Bellaire! A Note on FEMALE FURIES1/14/2020 As a woman who reads comics, this industry doesn't revolve around people like me as their target audience. Which is something women are sadly used to--while we're welcome in the community, women are often seen as second-class comic nerds, as if our gender determines what our interests should be, and how much of those interests we're allowed to know about. Clearly, this isn't the reality, and tons of women of all ages are interested and work/live their lives in comics., regardless of the male domination. This means that when something DOES get actively targeted towards female comic readers, it feels like a gift from the creators made just for us. To clarify, I'm talking about traditional comics themes and characters, but written to actively include female readers in the target audience. One recent example of this is the limited series, Female Furies. It was set up for success among female "sweaties" like me from the start: female driven creative team, female leads, accurate female relationships, recognizable metaphors for our own society, and best of all--it was set up with the backdrop of classic DC comics characters and stories (Hello, Apokalips). In fact, it even includes the original Jack Kirby source material from the old-school Mister Miracle and New Gods books in the back of the collected edition. Needless to say, I tore through the volume in an afternoon, and it left me with chills. I loved it endlessly and want to breathe it's spirit into every comic reader who will listen. But somehow, even through all of this, female Furies is misunderstood. Continue Reading to learn what I mean by that, and why Female Furies is such a perfect battle cry to women everywhere. HARLEEN #3 REVIEW! (FINALE)1/13/2020
Harleen #2: This Isn't Going to End Well11/18/2019
Scott Snyder and Charles Soule's new creator-owned project, Undiscovered Country, premiered last week. The premise was intriguing enough-- 30 years ago, the United States literally closed it's borders and skies. No one in, no one out. Now, the rest of the world is dying of a plague, and a crew is sent into the mysterious once-USA to find a cure and to discover what has become of this once great country. My review will have some spoilers in it, so if you haven't read the book and want to, maybe do that first. This first issue is one of the best starts to a comic I've read in a while, and I'm already geared up for issue two. Continue Reading for my thoughts on number one! |
