This is the one, the Ahsoka episode! Adam joins me for a (lit, tbh) long hour-plus discussion of the show so far, at the end of this episode! Let's do it.
Podcast notes for this episode: (U R HERE) Kicking it off with TAROT 00:05:46 and our Card of the Week, #17: the Star! After the history and symbolism, I cover the card's Interpretation/Meaning 14:55, and finally the always fun Pop Culture references 18:00 and summary. MANGA segment 25:19 includes the little bits of manga news, followed by catching up on what I've been reading in the world of manga lately. COMIC BOOKS 32:47 starting with October release news. Recent Reads/Events 39:07 including Kelly Thompson's The Cull #1, the finale of Dark Knights of Steel, plus Marvel Unleashed #1 and a ton more, all leading into catching up with the ending of Knight Terrors, which itself leads into the Batman/Catwoman Gotham War. On Marvel's side, the extensive Fall of X books have been read and summarized as well as I think is reasonable. TV/Movies/Anime segments 1:24:59 start with everything new and noteworthy, including new English anime dubs, shows I've caught up on or started fresh, and some recent movies and one-off's that I've also enjoyed. Really quickly, there's also relevant News/Announcements 1:32:39. Finally, (with Adam joining the discussion here) after some actually pretty solid discussion of the Harley Quinn show's finale of season 4 (and what we'd like to see in a season 5), we get to Ahsoka! The show, that is. Be warned, we saved recording this until we'd already cracked a few beers, so what you're hearing is raw, mostly unfiltered drunk nerds get excited about the Clone Wars and Rebels series' long-game outcome. Hail Filoni, tbh. It's so good to see....you get it. It's all in there, I hope the discussion isn't too wild. I'll be back with another episode uhhhh hopefully by the end of the month! Lots going on in life atm, so scheduling my recordings have been kinda difficult. But I shall return, and Adam too! There's at least, what, 2 more Ahsoka episodes to cover? And always, always, more comics, manga, and anime. The Fall 2023 anime season will be announced soon, too! Peace out, girl scouts. We've entered the hottest part of the year, just in time for Convention season! But the heat isn't the only major complication this year. More in the news segment!
Continuing our Tarot Lessons, the Card of the Week 00:03:19 is Major Arcana #12: the Hanged Man. I found what I thought was some neat history, trailing down into the usual pop culture references and concluding with the modern take on the card. There's a bit of news for Comic Books 00:15:46, which contains spoilers for the recent Fallen Friend issue and the future of the character in question. The base of our MCU Fatigue discussions found in this episode starts here. The fairly extensive Recent Reads/Events 00:23:52 covers almost a month of comics catching up, including talk about both the current Marvel and DC comic events. For Marvel, I put together a somewhat brief summary of the Sins of Sinister event and how it leads into our current Before the Fall "precursor" event. Then for DC, I have a very basic rundown of the Knight Terrors event backstory, and a few of the stories that have happened so far. More for both next episode! Other comics discussed in slightly more-depth include Doctor Strange #5, Jon Kent's new series, the end of Hairball, the complicated feelings on Captain Marvel through Dark Tempest #1 (and her movie), and of course, more on Fallen Friend. Shows/Movies/Anime 00:51:50 begins with what we've been currently watching, starting with a longer discussion of Hijack (ApleTV+) and ending with one about My Adventures with Superman (MAX)! Both are very positive, just so ya know. Then News for this section 001:04:04, with some Anime Expo announcements, some Greta Gerwig mentions, and a good amount of discourse on the VARIOUS big strikes happening right now, and how that'll effect both con season and the immediate future of fandom. Adam mostly covers the real talk on the latest Secret Invasion episodes 01:13:34, covering the BIGGEST reveals, who's lived and died so far, general MCU observations, and a fair amount of theories. Last is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 01:21:34, covering episodes 3-5 of season 2. All of them have been delightful, IMO, true to the spirit of Trek. On that note, we also ended up talking Doctor Who, and my "theory" on how the two shows are basically the same thing. The end! I'll be back as soon as I can manage, so stay hydrated, but metaphorically sweaty. Jessica Cruz: The Picture Post6/27/2023 The past few weeks have been a lot, I won't lie. Nothing need to know, but life does get in the way at times and this was certainly one of those times. As always, and maybe in the spirit of the anime Shoujo Heroine, we will continue moving forward with time and continue to strive to do our best, whatever that may entail on a day-to-day basis.
One of the hard points recently was the news of the passing of celebrated geek, musician, actor and voice actor, Lance Reddick. The dust hasn't quite settled enough for the tribute I feel he is required, so I don't have it here on this episode. But he is due the respect of proper obituary on this podcast, so when we are ready, it will happen. In the meantime, if you have any stories of Lance, please feel free to share them wherever you can so I can add that to his tribute. Starting with Tarot 06:41, I remembered this week to give the note on Divinatory Tarot and the Like that I meant to go over last week, and the full article it came from can be found here: http://hearingshofar.blogspot.com/2010/03/aries-shofar-at-pesach.html Card of the Week for our tarot lessons continuation is #5: the Hierophant. I have the description, symbolism, meanings and interpretation, plus a bit of history and some fun pop culture references! Manga of the week 0:19:23 is, ironically, it turns out, Tokyo Demon Bride Story by TADAICHI NAKAMA! Ironic, because I also learned today that this is the last day of it's publication: the manga ends as of today, April 3rd. While it seems to have a fair amount of haters, I found it quite charming and entertaining. Tokyo Demon Bride story can be found on the Shonen Jump app. Manga News for the week 22:26 includes the MyAnimeList Ultimate List of Manga Recommendations (https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2023-03-31/myanimelist-releases-ultimate-list-of-manga-recommendations/.196585 ) as well as a number of other starts and finales. Comic Book News 25:50 is a touch heavy this week, starting with the frankly ludicrous twitter debate of Comics vs Manga, and going into the sad truth of our female creators in comics, and how their legacies are sabotaged by the publishers who hired them. The discussion came from the following tweet: https://twitter.com/ComicBookHerald/status/1636013058890903553?s=20 . We also gave some time and thought to the legacy of Carol Danvers, and how the cancellation of her series at issue 50 is NOT a good decision for anyone involved, even so much as to relate to the previous point about female Big Two creators. Plus I have some King/Sampere Wonder Woman thoughts, which I don't think anyone will have an answer for until her landmark 800th issue. I talk a bit about the kick-off's from 3/22 0:37:49 plus some of what was new this past week, 3/29. As always, this is only a tiny fraction of all comic releases each week, so be sure to contact your local comic purveyor for the full details on what you may be interested in! Comics are, as always, for everyone. We get into the TV/MOVIES segement 0:41:31 ith what's New and Noteworthy lately, including Yellowjackets season 2, Wellmania, Unstable (wow, bit of trend here, eh?), School Spirits, and more. We're back to having a PROPER News/Announcements segment this week, starting with the RUMORS: 48:13, then MCU: 51:59 including the leaving of Victoria Alonso and Ike Perlmutter, Secret Invasion info and theories, the necessary mentioning of changes that may come to Loki season 2's cast, Liv Tyler's Betty Ross, and the casting of Wonder Man's brother, Grim Reaper. Then DCU: 1:03:16 talking Batman 2's villain, a certain unfortunate project, and of course, the Blue Beetle trailer! Big ups and downs in the pop culture news this week, for sure. Anime News 1:06:58 has me talking Spring 2023 Lineup English Dubs (no dates! why no dates, Crunchyroll?) as well as new Anime and show announcements, including the Netflix Scott Pilgrim project, Konosuba, Re:Zero, Spy x Family, Girlfriend Girlfriend, and more! Finally, I get caught up with where we're at with the Mandalorian season 3, talking chapters 20 and 21: the Foundling and the Pirate, respectively. From space pterodactyls to HOLY SHIT I forgot to finish talking about episode 21...ummmmm oops. I'll see if I remembe to talk about the Armorer + Bo Katan next week! heh. oops. And that's it! happy to have you here. Please rate/like my episodes so they get seen by more listeners, and thank you as always for your support. Next week we'll talk card #6, the Lovers, plus a new Manga of the week, more shows and movies and Mando, more anime, and tons of fun, I hope. Who is Marvel's Satana? How has she evolved over the years? Why do I blame Chris Claremont for her bastardization? These answers and so much more, coming your way!
This podcast proudly contains far more information on Satana than any single one of her wiki or fan pages, so I'm pleased and excited to share it with the world. On that note: some CW for sexual assault, violence against women, topics of heaven and hell, extreme personal loss, murder, attempted fratricide, sacrifice, satanic panic, classic horror tropes, general violence and lewdness, etc. The special starts with a little necessary Background, including Horrosploitation, Dr. Fredric Wertham's 1954 Seduction of the Innocent, and the implementation of the Comics Code Authority. We then continue the timeline into the eventual relaxation of the code in 1971, and the ensuing horror trends of the 1960's-80's. With that context in mind, we can begin talking Satana, starting with her (admittedly few) Key Comics: 0:16:44 Her various Aliases and names she's been called through the years, plus when it happened: 0:19:45 The Hellstrom Extended Family, which spread across multiple species and still holds a fair amount of mystery: 0:20:47 Satana's complete Teams and Teammates: 0:27:17 Her Allies, specifically those who are not teammates: 0:31:12 Love Interests, of course, which is surprisingly minor: 32:27 And then her Enemies, I'm sure fewer than you might expect: 0:33:21 Satana's Outfits/Physical Appearance, which has vastly changed through the years, and my breakdown of those changes: 0:37:34 Her half-demon Succubus Powers: 0:40:50 Alternate Reality/Format Versions of Satana: 0:42:38 And finally, her whole life and comic History: 0:45:22, including but not limited to the following categories: Early life; Turn for the Better, Turn for the Worst; the Basilisk; Death for Doctor Strange; Resurrection; Occultist for Hire, Thunderbolts/Dark Avengers; Between Time; All-New, All-Different Hell (and more Vegas, Baby!); and finally, her most recent appearances in Captain Marvel. I wrap up this special with a finale I worked to put all of what I've learned and discovered into account, which I'm calling, simply, Satana's Duality: 1:08:20. It is my desire that listeners who get this far might be inspired to also care about the character of Satana, and we can see more of her in the comics, properly, again. Satana is the first character I'm doing a Yancy Street Special on (this will be for October 2022) who I'm not already pretty familiar with going in to the process. She's from a distinct era of Marvel comics, and oddly enough, her creation was something they were very open about, to the point of writing the discussion of her character creation out as a short story in one of their comics. Since then, Satana has died, returned, and worn a handful of very different character designs, as well as fairly different personalities, even. My goal with this particular project is to try and identify a core answer to who Satana canonically is, regardless of the era, design, etc. Happy reading! Jessica Cruz (DC) Reading List!9/2/2022 SEPTEMBER 2nd 2022 UPDATE: Summary of Events complete through Jess' run as Power Ring! Reading List updated through current timeline! Hear about Jessica in the coming September 2022 Yancy Street Special! Jessica Cruz is a character I consider myself lucky for catching on to when I did. 2016's Rebirth at DC realigned a lot of comics and the characters who star in them, including Green Lanterns, which starred Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. Simon first appeared as an anti-hero in 2012, and Jessica was the next-made Lantern. Her story starts as her being possessed by the character Volthoom, who made her his new Power Ring. In time, Jessica earns the title of Green Lantern by Sacrificing herself to stop Volthoom, and joins the Justice League. In Rebirth, she and Simon were teammates by the order of Hal Jordan, and she dated Wally West for a time. While she hasn't been in the comics so much recently, I have high hopes for Jessica Cruz's future in comics! Patsy has been around since 1944, making her one of the oldest characters at Marvel Comics today, predating Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, and even the first Avengers team.
Of course, as she is another complex female comic book character, this patsy podcast comes with some serious warnings. Content Warnings: suicide, mental health, exploitation, narcissism, cheating, gaslighting, attempted sacrifice, etc. If you want to see the written list of KEYS 0:08:33, Recommended Reading, and Hellcat Aliases with their origins, check out the coinciding blog post on my site (no ads!), here: continue reading Also be sure to check out the Image Post that goes along with this episode, linked here (Future Link) Patsy's Hellcat has been on a bunch of different teams through the decades, so that is covered at 0:16:09. A short (ish) list of Patsy's Love Interests 0:50:30 and Enemies 0:56:23 follow, and you'll notice there is a LOT of crossover between those two lists. Finally, I cover the Other Realities 1:16:41 Patsy appears in, including media like TV and Games. At last, we reach Patsy's FULL HISTORY 1:23:02 including her Pre-Marvel 616 Comic History; Patsy coming to the main 616; Patsy as Hellcat, the Defender and Avenger; the changes of her life once she meets Daimon Hellstrom; and the modern history from Hellcat (2000) and on. I wrap this baby up with my final thoughts 1:51:15 on Patsy's tumultuous, extended history, summarizing all that she's come to represent and stand for, as further questions about her character that I'd like addressed in the future. Maddie has a tumultuous comic history, one that takes a degree of research to fully understand, so I've done the work for you! Here you'll find everything you ever wanted to know about Madelyne Pryor, tip to toe, from Claremont-era X-Men to Vita Ayala's current New Mutants arc. There's good reason Maddie has become a bit of a fan favorite, and I hope after this, you'll agree!
Please note the content warning at the beginning of the episode for biological engineering, brainwashing, emotional and physical torture, abandonment, murder and suicide, psychological damage and extreme trauma, removal of personhood, infanticide, cheating and betrayal, etc. Key Comics 0:07:42, covering all the noteworthy issues marking integral moments in her history. Aliases 0:10:51, every name Madelyne is called through her comic history, and from which issues. Team and Roles 0:13:18, going over Maddie's involvement as a Pilot/Mechanic, X-Men, Berserker, and more! Alternate Versions 0:22:01, briefly summarizing 5 different realities' versions of Maddie, plus one extra 616-version. Outfit Redesigns 0:27:32, focusing on two canon redesigns and 2 unofficial fan designs by professional artists. I also forgot to note a few things about Maddie's Goblin Queen outfit in this section, namely that anyone who's worn a "similar" top will understand it actually sits rather snug and comfortably. Additionally, the costume originated when Madelyne first became her "evil" version of herself, when her goal was the mental torture of her ex-husband, Scott. Her sultry look goes along with that intention just as much as the seduction of his younger brother, Alex. Relationships 0:32:01, talking Madelyne's interactions and time with Kate (Kitty) Pryde, Jean Grey, Scott and Alex Summers, the other X-Men, Mister Sinister, and others. Full Character Chronology 0:46:10, going over her entire comic book history, with insights, explanations, and everything else you can think of! The Modern History 1:05:39, covering anything that's happened to Maddie since Inferno (1989). Her TRUE Origin1:08:12, explaining the creators' original intention behind Madelyne, and how her story became so twisted away from those intentions by the end. My personal head-canon of who she is and how to handle her 1:12:24, because it shouldn't be so hard to get a satisfying plot surrounding her out! And finally, the current New Mutants Arc 1:15:05, starting with the recent release of issue #25, and discussing what might be coming in subsequent issues, based on what information we have. I hope you feel this special has done Madelyne Pryor justice, for what little I can offer. We an only hope those with the power to make positive change and deserved recognition in her story, do so, and do so well. Next Podcast Upload: Episode 66, Monday June 6th! While one was an unusually short week of comic pulls for me personally, and the other was surely worthy, the whole world was a bit taken by the happenings of American politics, for the past few weeks or so. Instead, to distract from the wishy-washy news cycle, I worked on my Madelyne Pryor complete appearance reading order! Since her appearances are much fewer in numbers than that of Illyana Rasputin's Magik, who I did something similar on before, I was able to actually read all the issues on the list. This ended up with me adding brief summaries of the relevant events of each issue, to give context for anyone looking to learn more about the Goblin Queen. I've edited the notes I took while reading as much as possible, but please forgive any discrepancies or errors I might have missed. My over-eager enthusiasm for Madelyne Pryor is matched by my desire to get more people to fall in love with her character, too. Additionally, while most issues summarize just Maddie's role, a few include more in-depth explanation of the whole issue's events. Continue Reading for the reading order and history of Madelyne Pryor! As I prepped for the Illyana podcast, I wound up with a file of images through her comic history, and I'll be sharing them here, with any others I come across in the future.
Fans of Illyana, enjoy! Welcome to what I've been looking forward to for over a month, and have spent almost all of my free time researching! It's the life and times of Illyana Rasputin, AKA Magik! Yes. Do I try and keep it within healthy limits of fandom? Also yes. But passion still abounds, and that is why we find ourselves here.
Clea is a character with a long history at Marvel Comics, who has recently been brought into the spotlight, arguably for the first time, in her first solo series, titled STRANGE. With this in mind, and the knowledge that she will likely be making her MCU debut this May in Multiverse of Madness, I felt it was time to share what I know about Clea's character. Starting off with her Family History 06:45, including her mother Umar and the Faltine line she comes from, and her father Orini and the Mhuruuks of the Dark Dimension. Discussion of various other women she encounters through her journeys in the comics 15:10 Clea's Team Affiliations & Other Relationships 24:18, including allies, enemies, the Defenders, and more. Her Personal (comic book) History 31:49, running through the important parts of her entire catalogue, hit by hit. and finally, STRANGE 0:47:26 which I still think should have been called Supreme. Starting in at 0:09:48 with a brief history of the lovely Patsy Walker, before getting into her romance with Daimon Hellstrom, all that ensued, and her life since. We then go on to explore the relationships of... Deathstroke and Terra 0:17:52 Carol and Marcus 0:24:44 Ray Palmer and Jean Loring 0:36:44 the Joker and Harley Quinn 0:41:08 Purple Man and Jessica Jones 0:43:59 Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne 0:45:38 Scott Summers and Madelyne Pryor 0:49:43 Betty Ross and Bruce Banner 0:54:15 Batman and Talia Al Ghul 0:57:39 Doctor Doom and Victorious 1:00:54 Clint Barton and ____ take your pick 1:04:27 Scott Summers and Emma Frost 1:05:17 Green Arrow and Black Canary 1:08:30 the Comedian and Silk Spectre 1:09:40 Both Stephen Strange and Clea & Reed Richards and Sue Storm 1:10:28 Ororo Munroe and T'Challa; Starfire and Anyone; Piotr Rasputin and Kate (Kitty) Pryde, all @ 1:13:19 And wrapping the list up with two more Marvel heroes I wouldn't recommend dating-- 1:14:51 And all of this is to say....what, exactly? That's the question. Why do our celebrated (and disgraced) comic writers continue to knowingly create this kinds of stories, these kinds of terrible relationships---specifically for our favorite superheroes to be in? Is it to show they, too, are flawed? Hardly, we see that in other ways. Is it to make them seem more real? Again, I can't say for sure. All I can do is explore these stories with you, learn from them, and aim to do (and be) better. Stay sweaty. Website/Blog: www.sensationalshegeek.weebly.com Apple Podcasts Podbean Spotify Instagram: @annawiththecomics Twitter: @savageshegeek YouTube: Sensational She-Geek Donation and All Other Links COMPLETE as of July 2021, to be occasionally updated for clarity. UPDATE OCTOBER '21: Clea's first comic appearance in 3 years! Scroll all the way to the bottom for this delightful update on her character. Key issue list now included at the top! Clea is one of the harder characters to do a reading list about, the way that I do them. With characters like Hellcat, Carol Danvers, and Angela, there are at least a few options of where to start, or anchor points in their history to read around, and get familiar with each era a little at a time. Patsy spent a long time as friend of the Avengers before even becoming Hellcat, then spent time with Defenders, got married, died, came back, and had a few definitive solo series' through the decades. Carol has a number of Hero names to read up on, plus a period of depowerment, and what came before the triggering of her Kree genetics. With Clea, she doesn't have any moments pulled out just for her, really, as every issue she's ever been in has been for the sake of someone else--usually Stephen Strange. Her powerset, her power-levels, even her identity wasn't clarified for decades, and all after her having been nameless for her first dozen or so appearances. But she was written to be delightfully intriguing; a spark of youthful energy in the twisted, aging, LSD-laced pages of the somber and responsible Doctor Stephen Strange. This doesn't make her any less interesting--in fact, it just makes me all the more certain we need a solid, definitive SOMETHING for Clea, and I won't deny I'd love to be given that chance, especially after having spent so much time--and continuing to spend ever-more time--reading up on all her appearances. The Read List that follows is a work in progress, as most of my lists always are. Since Clea doesn't have a whole lot of well-known anchor points in her history to work off of, I'm sticking with the traditional way of reading her comics--chronologically. Therefore, this list will take a while to get to anything Modern, though I have read a good bit of her modern appearances. Because I'm sticking with chronological, this time, if there's anything more towards the bottom you want to know about--send me an email! I'd love to do some reading research for you, and update it on Clea's list at the same time. Final note! This is also a work in progress in terms of editing. My notes as I read are a mess, usually, and I often forget to go back and clean it up. I'll do what I can as I go, but a lot is just going to be missed. I stick mostly to just the events in the issue that are directly relevant to the character in question, but again, hit me up if you need clarification on anything! Continue Reading for the complete appearances of Marvel's Clea! Another Monday, another weekly A podcast episode! Today, we kick things off with the weekly comic book pull list. I'm delighted to be doing spotlights on comics of excellent representation again this week, including Maria Llovet's Porcelain, Victoria Douglas' Cinnamon, Taboo and B. Earl's Spirit Rider, the second Horizon Zero Dawn series, and more! This week has the final issue of Maurene Goo and Takeshi Miyazawa's Silk series, the second-to-last of Sensational Wonder Woman, and a good deal of other #1's!
Then it's on to Friday's episode of the Bad Batch--ep. 14. While it ended with a serious problem for the Batch, it was an intriguing episode as we close in to the end of this 16-episode series! After that is my discussion of the new trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage! It looks pretty fun, but Woody Harrelson is no doubt going to totally steal the show. Finally, I end the episode with a discussion spurred by a recent online article/interview with Matt Damon, and the problematic ideas it presented. TL;DR: the end of theaters is not the end of entertainment media, and the writer should have done some--any-- comic book research. I'll be back this Friday, August 6th with episode 28B, focusing on comic book Picks from this week's NCBD! Don't forget Friday is also the premier of James Gunn's the Suicide Squad, in theaters and on HBO Max! I'll be watching it then and reviewing it on my episode next Monday, 29A, on Aug. 9th! Till then, stay hydrated, don't cast judgement, and get sweaty over your hobbies. Website/Blog: www.sensationalshegeek.weebly.com Apple Podcasts Podbean Spotify Instagram: @annawiththecomics Twitter: @savageshegeek YouTube: Sensational She-Geek Patreon Program: patron.com/sensationalshegeek Hiya, folks! This Monday brings us a HUGE comic book pull list for the week, including a total of 21 comics discussed! Highlights include the Mighty Valkyries, Batman Reptilian, Sonjaversal, Strange Adventures, and the return of Amazing Fantasy! These comics will come out Wednesday the 28th, or Tuesday the 27th for DC comics.
After a short blurb on the 13th episode of the Bad Batch, I'm covering Marvel's October solicitations! We did DC last week, so it's only fair. There are a ton of exciting things coming out in October, and I've picked out a bunch of ones I'm looking forward to! I had to stop the normal podcast, at this point, to talk about something important I forgot to mention last Friday: Marauders #22, which undid a long-ago wrong to a strong female character who always deserved better. Not only did they undo the wrong, they made it so she never went through the worsts of it in the first place. Now that's a retcon I can completely get on board with, and I talk about the meaningful details here. After a little MCU and Pokemon project news, the podcast today wraps up with a list of Eisner Award winners! The awards were granted over the weekend when Comic Con San Diego would normally be happening, and I'm thrilled to recognize a number of the titles and creators. I'll be back this coming Friday, July 30th for our last July episode, covering the new comics Pick list, breaking news and speculation, and whatever else becomes relevant between now and then! Till then, have an excellent week, and stay sweaty.
Good Monday everyone and what a Monday it is! I woke up this morning to see the first teaser trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings had dropped online! What a superb wat to start a sweaty week.
But first! I start the episode talking this week's comic book pull list, spotlighting comics written by and starring women. These also happen to be my favorite comics coming out this week, and include Luna #3, Monstress #33, Women of Marvel #1, Spider-Woman #11, and Captain Marvel #28. There are a lot of other comics I discuss as well, but those are the headliners of the week! After that, it's the regular Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode discussion, this week covering Friday's episode five. Following last week's bombshell, there was a lot to unpack, and we're definitely getting to a precipice of fan speculation. All discussed here! Then, finally, we can talk about Shang-Chi, and why there are so many reasons to be excited for this ground-breaking MCU film. From Awkwafina to the San Francisco backdrop; from the comics inspiration to modern Asian-American culture---of all the segments this week, I was most looking forward to discussing this teaser, as the movie behind it is such an important step. I hope I do it justice in explaining why. I don't like ending things on a negative note, so after the unfortunate rumors of Black Lightning versus Superman and Lois, I go through the Entertainment Weekly article posted today, coinciding with the Shang-Chi teaser, really just reaffirming my point about what an iconic and paramount moment in film and comics history this movie will be. As usual, I'll be back Friday, April 23rd, to discuss this week's comic book picks--things I enjoyed or were otherwise noteworthy from this week's comic book releases, as well as any industry or relevant pop culture news. Until then, as always, find something to get sweaty about, and sweat it out unabashedly. A Note on Clea of the Faltines.3/5/2021 I'd like to take a moment to address a blog I once found running a very popular series called "Clea Loves Sex."
For starters: Yes. She does. She isn't from Earth, although it seems the people of the Dark Dimension are...human? She discovers she is non-human with her mother's heritage, at least. Anyway, she is from the Dark Dimension. People there have magic, it would seem, and their world, ways, technologies, and cultures are wildly different, so it really makes sense that she might take some pride in this particular aspect that crosses over both cultures. It's something she didn't have to learn, adapt to, or discover as new when she arrived on Earth. So while she might dislike cars and phones and whatnot due to unfamiliarity, sex is familiar. Comfortable, on multiple levels. And, it gives Clea an opportunity to express her love to Stephen, something that she is constantly striving to prove and be worthy of. So yes. Clea does love sex. But writing an exploitative series on it, ultimately marking her as a "nympho" willing to sleep with any man who shows feelings for her, is not only inaccurate but also disrespectful to a character who has fought to be taken seriously for literal decades. Clea loves sex. But she also loves her friends, who she will go to extreme length for to protect and assist. She loves her father, her home, and her people, regardless of the often unfair and angry treatment towards her, their own Princess, through the ages. She loves to dress up for special occasions, not because she understands Earth fashion, but because she likes to please her loved ones with the effort she puts in for them. She loves animals, and cares for all living things. This love and care is particularly strong when it comes to other members of her gender, who she will fight for, tooth and nail, regardless of who it is that comes calling for her aid. And, I'm sure, Clea still loves Stephen Strange. The romantic part of that love has waxed and waned with her patience and sense of self-worth through the years, but the roots will never die; you don't just walk away from someone you intertwined your soul with for decades (another factor that was easily arguably an aphrodisiac in their relationship). While I don't think the writer of the blog's series was meaning to "slut-shame" Clea, I would definitely say he misinterpreted her character, or at least diminished it greatly for his own sexualization and kink preferences. To be clear, Clea of the Faltines is worth far more than any one man's tragically narrow fantasy of her. |
