Hello, world! This week I'm starting a new format for the podcast episodes. For the foreseeable future, regular episodes will be posted weekly on Mondays, with any additional episodes covering special features relating to comics history, relevant characters, or whatever else you want to hear about! Start sending me ideas!
The week's news starts at 0:08:15 kicking off with Lost in Space season 3, which is on Netflix in it's entirety! There is a lengthy discussion of the brief Spider-Verse sequel teaser, titled Across the Spider-Verse! I'm talking Web of Destiny, Inheritors, 2099, and more! I have two big MCU theories lined up at 0:17:36, followed by a really big, very official MCU announcement! The news is wrapped up with an overview of the She-Hulk update at 0:21:03, which leads her into her new series, coming next month. The comic book picks from last week start at 0:22:44, and the bulk of the discussion focuses on Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons #1, which was indescribably impressive and moving. I get to Animal Castle at 0:36:30, my second favorite pick of the week! Plus a whole lot of other reads from the past week, of course. Pulls for this week are found at 0:50:23, including a number of #1's as well as the return of Madelyne Pryor, the penultimate Hickman work for Marvel's X-Men, and a new era and creative team for Batman! You can listen to the Hawkeye episode 3 discussion at 0:57:10, going over the episode called Echoes. I point out comic book connections, theories, Easter eggs, and more as we go over this exciting, fast-paced episode. We wrap it all up with a very brief look at the recently closed arc of Young Justice, which starred some favorite oft-overlooked female characters, and featured an oddly positive retelling of a Killing Joke. I'll be back for a regular episode next Monday the 13th of December, covering Hawkeye episode 4, the week's comic book picks, the news, and anything else that hits my radar! In the meantime, send me those special edition episode requests and have a killer week! Welcome to another week of comics! This week has another great spread going on, with 3 books from DC, five indie titles, and eight from Marvel, two of which are X of Swords X-Men books. Of those, there are two new beginnings to comics, a one-shot, and the 100th Spider-Woman comic ever released, Karla Pacheco's fifth of her ongoing series.
Spotlights will be plentiful this week, again! I'm discussing Argentinian-American comic writer and legend Fabien Nicieza and his surprisingly heft history in the industry, then I'll be talking about Faith, from Faithless II, and her complicated sexual orientation. Last, I'm spotlighting Jessica Drew, Spider-Woman herself, on the occasion of her 100th solo comic! Continue Reading for all this and more!
New week, new pull list! Getting started earlier, this time, so what happened last week doesn't happen again. I'm trying to get more into writing reviews of single issues that strike me as remarkable, so head to the reviews section to see what I've added so far! Also see the comic book Pick Lists for shorter reviews.
This week's pulls bring in thirteen comics! Which is about average for me, recently. Of those, there are three one-shots, FIVE indie titles, five from Marvel, one of Dawn of X (X of Swords), and one non-one-shot DC comic. There's a lot to be read and learned about in comics this week! I'm doing a shorter Spotlight this week, on industry writer and colorist Jordie Bellaire! She's one of two colorists I've come to think of as favorites, both of which are women (the other being Tamra Bonvillain)! Bellaire has some excellent work under her belt as an art team member and a writer, so she's more than worth learning more about. Continue Reading to see what's good in comics this week!
This week, we have a rare thing in comics: a short pull list! Admittedly, four of the ten issues are Dawn of X books, one Marvel Annual, two are DC and three are from Image. A little skewed, as far as publishers go, but all quality comics nonetheless. And, I have to admit, it is a lot less pressure having fewer comics to write about every week.
This week I'm particularly proud of the representation spotlights. I talk about writer/artists Johnnie Christmas and Mirka Andolfo in the sections on creators of color and women in comics, respectively. Both creators have strong styles of and sectors of the comics world they thrive in, with impressive work under their belts already. Then, in the spotlight on LGBTQ+ topics in comics, I talk about Northstar and Daken--two queer male comics characters as two very different examples of queer male portrayal. Continue Reading for all this and more!
Welcome to my comic picks of the week!
As opposed to my weekly pull lists, the pick list is made of my favorite weekly comics after having read them. Sometimes things are marketed to be one thing, and end up another, so these are the confirmed goodies! This week for my top 5, I picked Batgirl #47, Daredevil #23, Hellions #2, Wolverine #3, and the Free Comic Book Day of Horizon Zero Dawn #0! I didn't even know that last one was coming out this week, so it was a great surprise that turned out to be an even better read! As this is one of my first weeks doing pick list blog posts, I have yet to land on a format that I know will work, so please bear with me! Other than that, Continue Reading to find out more about the top picks of this comic week! (Spoilers abound!)
Folks, this has week has been a bit of a bummer--even aside from things that hit the national news.
In the comics world, DC announced the cancellation of 3 formerly ongoing series': Batgirl, Batman & the Outsiders, and Justice League: Odyssey. You may note right away that none of these were included in my last pull lists, and you'd be correct. I'm about 3 issues behind on JLO, and to be honest, only recently learned author Cecil Castellucci (of one of my all-time favorite mini-series, Female Furies) was writing Batgirl. But I only just started B&tO in volume form with the hopes to catch up, and love how Brian Edward Hill used a Batman series to promote some often forgotten but ultimately very meaningful characters. While weak excuses were offered as to the cancellation reasons, I (and more than a few comics blog sites) find them all to be just that: excuses. Additionally, Marvel announced the abrupt cancellation of one of my top-5 current ongoing books, Strikeforce. I wrote just last week that Strikeforce is one of the best books at Marvel, and after reading last week's Empyre and Avengers, I can easily say it's the best team they have. The excuse offered by Marvel was basically some fudged timing, which has been worked around in the past for other books. In the light of these cancellations, I will be adding the last of these 3 series' to my pull lists, regardless if I catch up in time. They each represented a marginalized sector of the comics industry, if not multiple, and their cancellations feel like major leaps backwards in comics progression. What #ComicsPledge? Anyway, there are still comics to read, so Continue Reading to see what IS coming out this week! It's already February! This may be a pattern, but the past few months have FLOWN by. And they're likely only going to start moving faster, because there are a LOT of amazing new comics starting this winter/spring, and I'm not planning on missing them! I've started compiling my list of upcoming reads, and it's a lot. Which is great! I love reading comics and I love sharing the world of all things comics, so all this does is give me more material to talk about! Speaking of talking about comics, this week I'm sticking with my "looser" format of posting--instead of the long-form, title/solicitation/response I have been doing for a while. I find it to be more conversational, and it's likely more interesting to read! Without further ado, continue reading to see whats in store this week! |
