New week, new pull list! Getting started earlier, this time, so what happened last week doesn't happen again. I'm trying to get more into writing reviews of single issues that strike me as remarkable, so head to the reviews section to see what I've added so far! Also see the comic book Pick Lists for shorter reviews.
This week's pulls bring in thirteen comics! Which is about average for me, recently. Of those, there are three one-shots, FIVE indie titles, five from Marvel, one of Dawn of X (X of Swords), and one non-one-shot DC comic. There's a lot to be read and learned about in comics this week! I'm doing a shorter Spotlight this week, on industry writer and colorist Jordie Bellaire! She's one of two colorists I've come to think of as favorites, both of which are women (the other being Tamra Bonvillain)! Bellaire has some excellent work under her belt as an art team member and a writer, so she's more than worth learning more about. Continue Reading to see what's good in comics this week!

Top-5 Comic Pick List from 7/29/207/30/2020
This week's comics were a breeze to get through, for the most part. It was a smaller week, based on my average pull list numbers. While some books, like X-Men #10, surprised me with not being quite as inspiring as I expected, it left room for the others to shine ever brighter.
This week's top 5 comics picks ended up being, in no particular order, Cable #2, X-Factor #1, Captain Marvel #18, Vampirella/Red Sonja #9, and of course, Wonder Woman #759. I'm particularly proud that four out of the five titles are written by women, as well (Cable being the exception)! Some spoilers here, so read at your own discretion! It's a good time to be a nerd, because the comics industry is evolving in new ways all the time, and I'm just thrilled to be here. Continue Reading for the run-down on my picks of the last week! Ok, this is getting embarrassing. There's only so many weeks I can get away with having a mostly-Marvel pull list before it starts to look like I'm a massive Marvel stan (a term I hate and immediately regret using). Don't get me wrong, I obviously really like Marvel, but my Marvel-heavy pull lists are more of a comment on the current state of the comics industry than my personal taste. Go to any twitter page/message board/Reddit sub, you'll see a surprising amount of comic book fans reporting confusing and lazy editing, writing, and events at DC Comics in the past year or so. I'm sad to say it's a pattern I noticed as well, and the reason I only have a handful of DC books on my subscription list at all. And, of those, they're almost entirely Black Label books--the publishing house under DC where they put all their out-of-canon hero stories and non-cape comics. For these reasons, I've been working on adding more independent publisher content to by subscription list. There's a lot of new indie books starting in 2020, so now is the perfect tie to spread my comic-reading wings. And, if you've been keeping up, none of this is news. These are trends I've been writing about for months now, and it's only getting more obvious. Publishing giant disappointments aside, there's always amazing comics still coming out. INCLUDING some great DC books ;). Continue reading to see what I have this week! It's a short week for comics! Short is relative, I suppose, and for what my lists have been recently, this is definitely short. It's also very Marvel heavy--of the seven books I'm reading this week, four are Marvel, one is DC, one Dynamite, and one Image. Not the variety I'd normally like to have in my reading material, but when the list is so small, the variety will be narrow as well. That isn't to say there's nothing good coming out this week at all! This week marks the first issue of Marvel's third Gamerverse book for Spider-Man, Black Cat Strikes. I'm a big fan of Black Cat, so this series will hopefully fill a long-empty hole where my female Marvel anti-heroes should live. Additionally, this week has the next issue of Undiscovered Country, which has caused quite a stir even on just it's third issue, and two other favorites from my pull list: Revenge of the Cosmic Ghost Rider and Vampirella/Red Sonja (check out the Babs Tarr variant to the left!). It's a smaller, but definitely fun week in comics! Continue Reading to see what's good this week! PS--Extra content at the very end, don't miss out! PPS-- the 19th is my birthday! I don't expect you to do anything with this information. New Comic Books December 11th, 201912/8/2019
Nothing is slowing down here but the year. This week I'm talking about THIRTEEN different comics that come out Wednesday. I know I talk about having challenged myself at the beginning of the year to read more, and more variety of, comic books, but what has that really resulted in? My reading lists each week are much longer on average, and I've started this site to host my comic book babbling. As the year winds down, I think this winter I'll work on compiling a list of titles that have stuck with me, beginning to end, this year. Not only will that be a great annual wrap-up, and include my personalized recommendations for comics from 2019, but it will really show what kind of variety I've leaned into and what I read of each publisher. It'll be a small cross-section of this part pf my life, so to say. That'll be coming in a few weeks this December, but for now, Continue Reading for more comics babble this week! For what feels like the first time in a while, I have a nice, rounded feeling pull list this week. Its 4-and-3 Marvel and DC, plus a chic indie pick. A new series for each of the big two, as well. And that's not even mentioning the final issue of Johnathon Hickman's Powers of X series, which went alongside House of X that finished off beautifully last week. First and last issues makes for an exciting week in comics! Once again, I'll have additional suggestions at the bottom. For now, continue reading for the full weekly report! It's another stellar week for comics! I have six titles this time that I'll be picking up, from four different publishers! Finally. It's been pretty much just Marvel/DC these past few weeks as far as what I'm currently reading, which can cause a little "cape burnout". Don't get me wrong, I love all the series' that I'm reading and have no issues with the types of comics Marvel and DC publish. It's just that sometimes I need a little break from books that are all in the same interconnected worlds. There's a fair amount of restriction a creator is forced into when working within an expansive connecting universe like those do. At "Indie" publishers, I feel like creators have a little more room to be truly inventive and original (ex; Saga is a comic that could NEVER exist at either of the Big Two, and we are ever more blessed for it). I love all comics equally, but in my opinion, the more variety, the better! Continue reading for a closer look at what I recommend reading this week! |
