Hello everybody! I hope you have time to relax over the weekend, or are able to find that time in the coming week.
Today's "A" episode starts with the regular comic book pull list for the week, prefaced by my explanation of the Tom King Batman/Catwoman (Bruce/Selina) relationship as per how he's laid it out, and what we're learning in the 12-issue (plus one annual!) Batman/Catwoman series alongside artist Clay Mann. After the week's pull list, I go into discussion the recent official announcement of Oscar Isaac playing Marc Spector's Moon Knight! The self-titled show is meant to premier on Disney+ in 2022, and here I go over all the information we know so far, as well as a good deal of popular speculation. Finally, the episode wraps up with Horizon: Zero Dawn! The 2017 Game of the Year winner is finally back with a full-bodied sequel! This new story will take Aloy out west, to see familiar sights in ways we've never seen them before, and battle machines and animals she's never before encountered. Not only do we have that coming, we also have a second HZD comic series on the way! This second run will be called Horizon Zero Dawn: Liberation (as opposed to the first volume's Sunhawk title), and retains game-writer Anne Toole as series writer alongside a new team of creatives. While Sunhawk took place after the first game's story and mostly from the perspective of a new character, here I talk about what makes this new series different from the last--but just as exciting! I'll be back for a regularly scheduled episode this Friday, June 4th! Until then, keep an eye out for my SAILOR MOON Podcast Special! Prefacing the upcoming Netflix Eternal movies, I'll be discussing the manga arc being used for inspiration, the original anime's version of the same arc, refreshing where we left off on Sailor Moon Crystal, and adding in my own experience with the format, and what makes this particular "retro" series still so cool today! That'll be out Thursday before I watch the movies, if you're interested! Otherwise, have an excellent week, and get sweaty about your hobbies!

As a major fan of Guerrilla Games' Horizon Zero Dawn video game, it was thrilling to hear that a comic based on it was in the works! Set in the amazing setting of the game, the HZD comic is meant to continue the story of the game's alternate future world, expanding on the story while still holding true to what made it such a success int he first place. If you're unfamiliar with the world of the Horizon Zero Dawn game this comic is based off of, don't sweat it! There's plenty of filler pages to give the reader all the pertinent information about this incredible world and its well thought out societies. It wasn't until the Free Comic Book Day bonus "zero issue" that I discovered this whole series is written by one of the writers from the original HZD game, Anne Toole. Toole was one member on a female-heavy team of story writers and world builders in charge of building the story and world of the game. I have full confidence in her ability to not only replicate the unique qualities of the HZD world, but to translate that elegantly into comic form. On the artistic side, the interiors of this series are handled by Ann Maulina. Maulina is an artist from Indonesia who specializes in game design and web comics, which makes her a perfect fit for this comic. With Anne Toole and Ann Maulina backing up an incredible already established universe, this is one mini-series you won't want to miss. Happy November! I can hardly believe the year is coming to an end already. Needless to say, it's been a weird and wild one.
This week's comics are absolutely stellar, with only three DC, nine Marvel, and four independent publisher releases. Of those, two are from X of Swords, three are by Kelly Thompson, and two are from Black Label. I've done another trio of spotlights this week, showing off comic book representation! For the spotlight on people of color in comics, I'm discussing Grag Pak's Agents of Atlas, the first all-Asian superhero team! Then, after the reveal of Kate Pryde's bisexuality a few issues of Marauders ago, I'm discussing the sexuality of the X-Men, and how that changes through the years. Finally, with her three upstanding comic releases this week, I talk about writer Kelly Thompson, and how she chooses to be fresh with her characters without tearing them down or tormenting them first--something very common (and usually masculinity driven) in cape comics. Without further ado, Continue Reading for more comics talk!
This is a longer week for comics by just a bit, with a total of eighteen pulls! Amazingly, in my opinion, exactly half are independent publishers, including Image, BOOM!, Dynamite, Titan, Aftershock, and Dark Horse Comics. I think that covers most the major indie publishers, missing maybe just IDW and one or two big players in the game.
I have all three spotlights ready to go this week! For the spotlight on people of color in comics, I'm discussing award-winning writer and educator Eve L. Ewing and her Champions book, starring a few highly representative teenage heroes. For queer topics in comics, I'm back with Far Sector, this time talking about main character Jo's omnisexuality! And last, for the spotlight on women in comics, I go over Adventureman's Claire Temple and her impressive sisters! Girl power, always and forever. This week also features what I'm going to call my Big Week of Big Books (suggestions welcome), after the continual plethora side-by-side favorites and mostly indie releases--Inkblot, Spy Island, Lonely Receiver, We Only Find Them When They're Dead, Black Widow, and Horizon Zero Dawn have been coming out on the same days, and it makes for an exciting week of reads! Continue Reading for all this and more discussion on this week's comic releases!
Its the end of September already, and the year has been like no other. I have to notice that having this space to talk about comics each week has become something of a comfort, when everything else seems to be going berserk. While my pull lists have gotten longer this year, I see the comics that I'm reading expanding my perspective and inspiring me creatively.
This week has a total of fourteen comics on my pull list! Two #1s, three one-shots, three more indie titles, one for X of Swords, three other Marvel titles, and two other DC ones. I like that I'm getting a little more spread with the publishers that I read, and especially evening out the cape-to-not comics. I'm also back to doing the three full spotlights again this week, for people of color, LGBTQ+ topics, and women in comics. I'm spotlighting the new Shang-Chi series in the first segment, and touching (very lightly, TBH) on the history of racism against Asian-Americans. Then, I'm talking about two female illustrators- Robin Eisenberg, who's queer-forward work is featured on this week's Wonder Woman 1984 variant, and Amanda Conner, artist and co-writer for Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey, who is probably one of the most well-established female artists in comics. There's so much to discuss, again, this week, so Continue Reading to step into the delightful, if messy, world of comics!
It's the big guns this week with a new comic pull list! I'm back to old habits and am discussing 24 different comics! Seven of the are either first issues or Specials, and at least three are final issues, so it isn't as crazy as it sounds.
Many of the week's pulls are limited series' in some way, as well, making them technically temporary pulls. If you're more into knowing about publishers, nine are Marvel, three are DC, and the rest are spread across independent publishers. These 24 pulls this week are also why some of my ensuing blurbs are a little shorter than normal. Continuing in doing my representation spotlights, I picked out Bitter Root and it's creative team as the spotlight on creators of color. Non-binary artist Jen Hickman is talked about for queer representation, and Spy Island, with it's Man-Eaters team of women, for female representation in the comics industry. Continue Reading to see what kind of amazing comics are coming out this week!
Looking at my pull list of 17 comics this week, I have to wonder. Is this sustainable?
Ideally I'd say of course a pull list like this is manageable, but the entire world is running very different from the world we had a year ago today, so I can't make any promises. What I can say is the series' I eventually DO drop from my pull list will be because of their quality first and foremost. I have seventeen comics on my pull list this week, and another beginning of a series I'm debating picking up or not. What's great about getting a bigger pull list every week is that the variety of comics you end up reading is so much more broad and satisfying. This week I have comics of ALL KINDS on my pull list, and I'm pumped to talk about every single one of them. I'm also excited about this week's Representation Spotlights, as we have some truly wonderful examples of representation in the comics industry. I've picked out Far Sector to speak on people of color as comics creators as well as in comics themselves; Horizon Zero Dawn for it's female creative team and female-driven plot; and I'm even doing a small commentary on male bisexuality in our masculinity obsessed society, with Sex Criminals and Deadpool (hell yeah Deadpool is queer!) as comic book examples. Continue Reading to dive into the wild wild world of comics in my pull list this week!
Welcome to my comic picks of the week!
As opposed to my weekly pull lists, the pick list is made of my favorite weekly comics after having read them. Sometimes things are marketed to be one thing, and end up another, so these are the confirmed goodies! This week for my top 5, I picked Batgirl #47, Daredevil #23, Hellions #2, Wolverine #3, and the Free Comic Book Day of Horizon Zero Dawn #0! I didn't even know that last one was coming out this week, so it was a great surprise that turned out to be an even better read! As this is one of my first weeks doing pick list blog posts, I have yet to land on a format that I know will work, so please bear with me! Other than that, Continue Reading to find out more about the top picks of this comic week! (Spoilers abound!) |
