After taking a brief break to settle in to my new schedule, I'm back with a loaded baked potato of an episode this week!
The News begins (0:06:05) with some recent "IRL" tidbits, before getting into the juicy rumors, aka Sacha Baron Cohen 13:05 possibly playing Mephisto in Iron Heart! Plus some good Blade Director rumors, too! If you haven't heard it yet, Henry Cavill IS back in Black Adam (0:19:13), Harrison Ford IS the new Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (0:21:50), and Barbarella (0:29:01) has been cast as Sidney Sweeney! Unfortunately, the live-action Zatanna (0:31:15) project was pushed off of HBO, but I feel like it's a good thing Marvel has a movie slow-down (34:39), pushing back a number of MCU films. Then there's Matt Reeves Batman (0:38:30) villains plans! Fianlly, my thoughts on the (FINALLY) Quantumania Trailer (0:40:56), and brief note of the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (0:48:09), coming November 15th. This week's spotlight manga is none other than Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid (49:48), by Coolkyousinnjya, creator of I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying and Komori-san Can't Decline. This one is a manga AND anime, is full of girl love, and I can't recommend it enough! A handful of comics Picks (0:57:21) from the past few weeks prelude this week's comic Pulls (1:00:14), which includes an impressive amount of indie kick-offs! It's a great time to get into indie comics, for real. I admit I have a less-than-pleased She-Hulk Finale review (1:04:44), but almost definitely for reasons you won't expect. If we get a season two, I hope the (new?) showrunners allow SOMETHING of the comics to have an influence on the plot or characters. Something. Anything. But in greater news, the Rings of Power Finale 1:12:20 was even better than I was hoping! The Harfoots! Halbrand! The Stranger! The Witches? Galadriel! Celebrimbor! SAURON! This was such a satisfyingly watch, changes be-damned. I loved this, and I'm super excited for the next four seasons! The Halloween Yancy Street Special should be out within the week, on Satana, otherwise keep an eye out for episode 83, coming at the turn of the month! Happy November! I can hardly believe the year is coming to an end already. Needless to say, it's been a weird and wild one.
This week's comics are absolutely stellar, with only three DC, nine Marvel, and four independent publisher releases. Of those, two are from X of Swords, three are by Kelly Thompson, and two are from Black Label. I've done another trio of spotlights this week, showing off comic book representation! For the spotlight on people of color in comics, I'm discussing Grag Pak's Agents of Atlas, the first all-Asian superhero team! Then, after the reveal of Kate Pryde's bisexuality a few issues of Marauders ago, I'm discussing the sexuality of the X-Men, and how that changes through the years. Finally, with her three upstanding comic releases this week, I talk about writer Kelly Thompson, and how she chooses to be fresh with her characters without tearing them down or tormenting them first--something very common (and usually masculinity driven) in cape comics. Without further ado, Continue Reading for more comics talk!
It's the big guns this week with a new comic pull list! I'm back to old habits and am discussing 24 different comics! Seven of the are either first issues or Specials, and at least three are final issues, so it isn't as crazy as it sounds.
Many of the week's pulls are limited series' in some way, as well, making them technically temporary pulls. If you're more into knowing about publishers, nine are Marvel, three are DC, and the rest are spread across independent publishers. These 24 pulls this week are also why some of my ensuing blurbs are a little shorter than normal. Continuing in doing my representation spotlights, I picked out Bitter Root and it's creative team as the spotlight on creators of color. Non-binary artist Jen Hickman is talked about for queer representation, and Spy Island, with it's Man-Eaters team of women, for female representation in the comics industry. Continue Reading to see what kind of amazing comics are coming out this week!
Looking at my pull list of 17 comics this week, I have to wonder. Is this sustainable?
Ideally I'd say of course a pull list like this is manageable, but the entire world is running very different from the world we had a year ago today, so I can't make any promises. What I can say is the series' I eventually DO drop from my pull list will be because of their quality first and foremost. I have seventeen comics on my pull list this week, and another beginning of a series I'm debating picking up or not. What's great about getting a bigger pull list every week is that the variety of comics you end up reading is so much more broad and satisfying. This week I have comics of ALL KINDS on my pull list, and I'm pumped to talk about every single one of them. I'm also excited about this week's Representation Spotlights, as we have some truly wonderful examples of representation in the comics industry. I've picked out Far Sector to speak on people of color as comics creators as well as in comics themselves; Horizon Zero Dawn for it's female creative team and female-driven plot; and I'm even doing a small commentary on male bisexuality in our masculinity obsessed society, with Sex Criminals and Deadpool (hell yeah Deadpool is queer!) as comic book examples. Continue Reading to dive into the wild wild world of comics in my pull list this week! For the first time in months, I can almost count my comic pulls for the week on one hand. Almost. It's only 6 this week, half of last week's number, which has been about average these last few months. As I've mentioned a few times before, this year I challenged myself to add more comic books, and specifically more variety, to my reading list. Because of this, my weekly pull list has at least doubled in size on average, giving me plenty of reading material and plenty to talk about. Unfortunately like last week, no indie comics on my list, just Marvel and DC. This time of year publishers are doing a lot of Annuals, Specials, and One-Shots, which is why this week is so much smaller for me. That being said, the content of the six issues this week are just as good as ever, with an annual, two final issues, a first issue, and two second-to-lasts. Continue Reading to see all about my sweaty content for the week! Congratulations, reader, you made it through last week! I ended up with about 10 pulls, so this week will be a little lighter. I have a much more manageable six issues to read this week, with a few more recommendations at the bottom again if you can't find anything to read. My laptop is being worked on at the computer repair shop as we speak, so while I am still mildly struggling with everything on mobile, I will do my best to keep up with editing and formatting. |
