Its the end of September already, and the year has been like no other. I have to notice that having this space to talk about comics each week has become something of a comfort, when everything else seems to be going berserk. While my pull lists have gotten longer this year, I see the comics that I'm reading expanding my perspective and inspiring me creatively.
This week has a total of fourteen comics on my pull list! Two #1s, three one-shots, three more indie titles, one for X of Swords, three other Marvel titles, and two other DC ones. I like that I'm getting a little more spread with the publishers that I read, and especially evening out the cape-to-not comics. I'm also back to doing the three full spotlights again this week, for people of color, LGBTQ+ topics, and women in comics. I'm spotlighting the new Shang-Chi series in the first segment, and touching (very lightly, TBH) on the history of racism against Asian-Americans. Then, I'm talking about two female illustrators- Robin Eisenberg, who's queer-forward work is featured on this week's Wonder Woman 1984 variant, and Amanda Conner, artist and co-writer for Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey, who is probably one of the most well-established female artists in comics. There's so much to discuss, again, this week, so Continue Reading to step into the delightful, if messy, world of comics!

Immortal She-Hulk #1 REVIEW9/24/2020 Jennifer Walter's She-Hulk is an important character to me, for a number of reasons. She's smart, educated, and willing to stand up for whats right even if it means making some enemies along the way. She's clever, beautiful, sassy, and a ton of fun in general. But she also has a history of trauma, anger issues, and repressed emotion. She's dealt with her personal problems, time and time again, and never asked for help from anyone.
When people say they want strong women in comics, they don't mean brute strength MMA fighters. They mean well-developed, realistic, rounded, and believable women. Even the strongest of us have moments of weakness, and Jen truly is the strongest among women. Continue Reading to learn why I loved this single issue so well, and what it means for Jen Walters and She-Hulk. An Unkindness of Ravens #1 REVIEW9/24/2020 An Unkindess of Ravens #1 by Dan Panosian and drawn by Marianna Ignazzi, colored by Fabiana Mascolo came out this week, September 23rd. Its a story that follows high-school aged witches in a small eastern seaboard town, and promises to be a combination of everyone's favorite witch and high school dramas. Continue Reading to see what made this first issue so great!
Here's this week's PICKS! Out of the comics I wrote about in my PULL list this week (which can be found here), these are my favorite reads. Most of these are linked to seperate reviews, because frankly, the series' I'm reviewing are so good, they deserve their own pages for reviews. This week. I'm reviewing Immortal She-Hulk #1, an Unkindess of Ravens #1, Bliss #3, and Batgirl #49! Continue Reading to get this week's scoop on comics!
I feel so dumb for not knowing Cecil Castellucci was the current writer on Batgirl! And I LOVE Barbara Gordon. She gets a lot of shit from male readers, but she's like many of us women reading comics--trying to make her mark in man's industry. But it's been a long time since I read Batgirl regularly, which I'll explain again in this post, under the review for issue #47.
This is an ongoing series still, so I'll be reviewing the final issues as they come out! Continue Reading to see what I've already got covered, and find out a little about this run of Batgirl! Giant-Size X-Men: Storm REVIEW!9/20/2020
New week, new pull list! Getting started earlier, this time, so what happened last week doesn't happen again. I'm trying to get more into writing reviews of single issues that strike me as remarkable, so head to the reviews section to see what I've added so far! Also see the comic book Pick Lists for shorter reviews.
This week's pulls bring in thirteen comics! Which is about average for me, recently. Of those, there are three one-shots, FIVE indie titles, five from Marvel, one of Dawn of X (X of Swords), and one non-one-shot DC comic. There's a lot to be read and learned about in comics this week! I'm doing a shorter Spotlight this week, on industry writer and colorist Jordie Bellaire! She's one of two colorists I've come to think of as favorites, both of which are women (the other being Tamra Bonvillain)! Bellaire has some excellent work under her belt as an art team member and a writer, so she's more than worth learning more about. Continue Reading to see what's good in comics this week! This is another review I write a number of weeks ago, but find myself going back to again and again as an example of modern comic book excellence. I've said it before on this site: I LOVE to talk about comics when I can pick through them, pointing out the various literary devices and artistic strengths. I get SWEATY about comics like that, and thanks to hearty efforts from every member of the creative team, X-Men #11 is easily going down as one of my favorite single-issues this year. I've touched this review up from when I originally wrote it as part of my week #28 Pick List, so there will be minor differences to that version. Continue Reading to see what made this issue so fantastic! X-Men #11 was written by Johnathon Hickman, with art by Leinil Francis Yu, and colors by Sunny Gho.
I was really trying to avoid this, this week, but life has required me to stop and catch up with non-SSG things, so I didn't have time to do the pull list and spotlights the way i normally would. Instead, I'll do a VERY brief overview of what I'm reading, what I'm excited for, and who the spotlights were going to be on. Next week, however, already has me excited about writing the week's pull blurbs, so I have no doubt I'll get those done, no problem.
Here's the very brief, non-pretty rundown of this week in comics: fifteen comics seven indie 3 dawn of x 1 other marvel 2 DC Again, I'm not doing blurbs for this week's pulls, just some very quick-and-dirty chat about select comics from my list. Continue reading for the most basic pull list I've ever done! X of Swords Event Information9/11/2020 Since X of Swords is an event covering ALL the X-Men titles, all of which I read, I figured I would add this handy-dandy release schedule cheat-sheet to my blog for reference!

I originally wrote this review as part of my comics Pick List from week #29. It was one of about six premier issues that came out that week, and stood out among the twenty-four comics pulls so bright that I wrote an extended review on it for that week's picks. I've gone back to that review a few times already, and as Black Widow continues to get positive buzz, I feel like I should give this issue its due spotlight. Among other reasons, this series premier is helmed by three women, all of whom more than pull their weight in making the issue a supreme success! Continue Reading for my full review of Black Widow #1 by Kelly Thompson, drawn by Elena Casagrande, with colors by Jordie Bellaire!
I'm really excited to talk about my comic pulls this week. Unlike last week, where I had five issues that were all #1's and mostly independent publishers, my picks are from just DC and Marvel.
What makes these picks particularly neat, however, is that they are almost all written by women! Kelly Thompson writes two issues, Captain Marvel #21 and Star #5, Leah Williams is on X-Factor #3, and Mariko Tamaki on Wonder Woman #762. That just leaves Scott Snyder with Death Metal: Trinity Crisis #1, another tie-in from the original Metal series' follow-up. There will be spoilers in these reviews, and I'll try to talk about what it was that made each one good, instead of just the summary of events. This includes art, which I consider a major factor in a making or breaking a comic. My favorite comics to discuss are the ones that I can pick through with a comb, pointing out the details of why its good, why the events mattered, and what it all means. In part, that's why I started this site! Continue Reading for my thoughts on this week's favorite comics!
Welcome to another week of comics! It's another good mix, without quite the numbers of last week's pulls.
This go around, there are twelve comics I'll be discussing. Of those, two-thirds are Marvel, with a weak single issue from Image and the last quarter brought in by DC. Surprisingly, no Black Label books this week! I've been trying to do my comic book pick lists at least every other week, but I put out one for this past week, coinciding with pull list #29! You can check that out in a new tab here, where I go over five separate #1 issues that stood out among the rest of last week's 24-issue list. This week's representation spotlights are a lot of fun for me! I'm talking about Jessica Cruz from Justice League Odyssey, Marvel's apparent wedding issue special for Hulkling and Wiccan, and then Kelly Thompson's surprising female-led mini-series, STAR. Between an agoraphobic Latina Green Lantern, a flagship same-sex marriage, and a reporter-turned-villain-turned-Reality-stone-holder written by one of Marvel's most successful modern female writers, there's a lot to discuss on terms of representation in this week's comics. Continue Reading for all this and more! Comic Book PICK LIST Week #29!9/3/2020
Going in to this week, I knew doing a pick list would be easy. The week's comics totaled to about 24 books for me, including a number of #1 issues, final issues, and specials. With such a vast array of releases, there was bound to be a few that stood out among the pack. Even with 24 comics, my top picks were some no-brainers. Spy Island, Black Widow, Inkblot, Lonely Receiver, and We Only Find Them When They're Dead were all stupendous first issues, so for the first time, I have a pick list made up entirely of premier issue comics! These five comics all have reviews beyond the cut, with links to each one's section, so Continue Reading for the details on this week's best comics! As usual, SPOILER ALERT! For Black Widow, plot points are fair game, but major spoilers will be marked as well as I can.
