Welcome to another week of comics! This week has another great spread going on, with 3 books from DC, five indie titles, and eight from Marvel, two of which are X of Swords X-Men books. Of those, there are two new beginnings to comics, a one-shot, and the 100th Spider-Woman comic ever released, Karla Pacheco's fifth of her ongoing series.
Spotlights will be plentiful this week, again! I'm discussing Argentinian-American comic writer and legend Fabien Nicieza and his surprisingly heft history in the industry, then I'll be talking about Faith, from Faithless II, and her complicated sexual orientation. Last, I'm spotlighting Jessica Drew, Spider-Woman herself, on the occasion of her 100th solo comic! Continue Reading for all this and more!

I'm pulling the same number of releases this week as last, with eighteen total books. I'm happy to say I'm trying out five new indie titles, to go along with five from DC, two other indies, three for the X of Swords event, and two other Marvel comics. All in all, a hefty week, but a very exciting one.
Since there are three Marvel comics that fit in to the X of Swords X-Men event, I've made them their own section so the discussions can all be together, in reading order of the issues. Hopefully this will make following along with the event a bit easier, or as I said last week, you can always pick up the collected edition towards the end of January, 2021. The five new indie titles are all experimental, coming from Dynamite, Aftershock, Vault, Oni Press, and Dark Horse Comics. The only one with a creative team I'm familiar with is Gerard Way's Killjoys original series follow-up, National Anthem. Out of the rest, I definitely imagine a few of them sticking around. Due to life complications, I'm only doing one spotlight this week, on female comic artist Carmen Carnero! She's made quite the name for her in the past few years, and I'm excited to tell you more! New week, new pull list! Getting started earlier, this time, so what happened last week doesn't happen again. I'm trying to get more into writing reviews of single issues that strike me as remarkable, so head to the reviews section to see what I've added so far! Also see the comic book Pick Lists for shorter reviews.
This week's pulls bring in thirteen comics! Which is about average for me, recently. Of those, there are three one-shots, FIVE indie titles, five from Marvel, one of Dawn of X (X of Swords), and one non-one-shot DC comic. There's a lot to be read and learned about in comics this week! I'm doing a shorter Spotlight this week, on industry writer and colorist Jordie Bellaire! She's one of two colorists I've come to think of as favorites, both of which are women (the other being Tamra Bonvillain)! Bellaire has some excellent work under her belt as an art team member and a writer, so she's more than worth learning more about. Continue Reading to see what's good in comics this week!
Welcome to another big week in comics! I feel like I've been going pretty hard on these pull lists each week, and I hope the new formatting helps with the added features. Feedback is always appreciated!
One thing that stood out to me about this week's pull list is that a solid third of them are #4's. I'm not sure why this struck me as odd, but I wanted to share. You might have also noticed I read a good deal of limited series'. This week alone, there is the Death Metal event tie-in, the fourth of five for Star and Ludocrats, and the final issues of Dead Earth, the X-Men tie-in to Empyre, and Ant-Man. I'm also picking up the final book of the once-ongoing Harley Quinn series, where the notoriously self-contained book is going canon for it's bonus-sized final issue. A lot of independent publishers often prefer short story contracts, to keep their releases fresh and new, offering more all the time. Since I'm actively trying to expand the ratio of indie comics I read, it makes sense that I'm reading more limited series', as well. I'm also still doing the spotlights on representation in comics, which I plan to continue for the foreseeable future. This week, I'm discussing comic writer Ta Nehisi Coates, pop culture's response to Harley Quinn's multi-faceted sexuality, and a spotlight on the women of comics showcasing writer Karla Pacheco and her new Spider-Woman series. You may also notice a number of these "blurbs" are smaller than my usual pull list writing. This is due to a larger number of commitments over the weekend, pressing myself for time, and the fact that for some of these, I've either talked them to death already, or the story isn't capturing me as well as it used to. If the shortness of those blurbs is off putting, apologies, I'm a little overdue for a pull list cleanup. Continue Reading for all this and more!
It's another banger of a comics week, with books of all kinds! At Marvel, the EMPYRE event wages on, leaving both excellence and stupidity in it's wake; plus X-books, some spiders, and a few unjustly digital-first released books finally getting their print release. DC has two doomed books, Mariko Tamaki's second issue of WONDER WOMAN, and more METAL! The indie stack is fairly well represented, with a new #1, Matt Fraction and the Dodsons' ADVENTUREMAN, and more Image books from Christopher Priest!
You may note I didn't do a "pick list" for last week. Usually I try to do them on Thursday, after binging the weekly comics by that afternoon. This week, however, I went on a road-trip Thursday instead! We went to the Bay Area for toy and comic book hunting, and I am pleased to report we found some INCREDIBLE collection pieces! I'll be writing somewhat about those eventually, but for now, onto the coming week's pulls! Continue Reading to see all the comics goodies I have picked out this week!
Looking at my pull list of 17 comics this week, I have to wonder. Is this sustainable?
Ideally I'd say of course a pull list like this is manageable, but the entire world is running very different from the world we had a year ago today, so I can't make any promises. What I can say is the series' I eventually DO drop from my pull list will be because of their quality first and foremost. I have seventeen comics on my pull list this week, and another beginning of a series I'm debating picking up or not. What's great about getting a bigger pull list every week is that the variety of comics you end up reading is so much more broad and satisfying. This week I have comics of ALL KINDS on my pull list, and I'm pumped to talk about every single one of them. I'm also excited about this week's Representation Spotlights, as we have some truly wonderful examples of representation in the comics industry. I've picked out Far Sector to speak on people of color as comics creators as well as in comics themselves; Horizon Zero Dawn for it's female creative team and female-driven plot; and I'm even doing a small commentary on male bisexuality in our masculinity obsessed society, with Sex Criminals and Deadpool (hell yeah Deadpool is queer!) as comic book examples. It has been a minute, hasn't it?
It feels diminutive to try and list all the goings-on of the world and my life in the past 6-months or so, so I'm not going to try and do that here. I might make a long-winded general blog post later, but don't wait for that one. World news is constantly updating, so it may be some time before I figure out how to address these situations. This is my first post since February, and I've just finished redesigning the layout of the site, as well! I'm changing up the format of my posts a little, which I hope will make sense, and also changing the format of the weekly Pull lists. I want to be sure to include and point out the weekly books of great representation. Be it the creative team or subject matter, representation of all people belongs in comics. To further drive this point, I will be including in my pull lists Spotlights on the books that have quality real-world representation in some way. On that note, this also happens to be an EXCELLENT week to start reading new comics--I've got FIVE series premiers picked out and a few more "jumping on points" for ongoing books, all of which make great starting points for new readers!
