The weather is cooling down, but I'm just getting sweatier each week on the podcast!
In news this week, we're talking Rihanna's return with Lift Me Up (0:12:29), the new co-heads of DC Films (0:16:46), a small update for The Batman's Arkham Asylum spinoff (0:23:41), the major changes for the HBO Green Lantern Series (0:25:00), news about the Witcher season 4 (0:29:12), the Future of Doctor Who (0:31:28), a new WandaVision Spinoff (0:38:41), Secret Invasion series news (0:41:54), and news about the upcoming Venom 3 (0:44:35). The Spotlight Manga for the week (0:52:48) is The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated, by Wakame Konbu, which is also my Halloween costume! There's only 3 volumes out in English so far, with the fourth coming later this month, so now is a great time to jump in! This week's comic picks (0:56:42) includes the finale of Marvel's Judgement Day, and the coming week's Pulls (1:06:51) are fill with indie starters! This fall is an amazing time to get into indie comics, specifically. There's something coming for everyone! Finally, I go through the events of the Power of the Doctor (1:14:20) Doctor Who episode, Jodie Whittaker's final as the 13th doctor. With a lot of changes supposedly coming to the show starting next fall, there's a lot of be discussed and fondly remembered. I'll be back with episode 84 next week (and to talk that Wonder Man news!), but keep an eye out this Friday the 4th for my Halloween Yancy Street Special, covering the character Satana, plus 1970's horror exploitation trends, the Comics Code, Satanic Panic, Seduction of the Innocent, and more factors that went into and still do go into horror comics and characters today! Better late than never! When life gives you lemons, make a podcast, just later than usual.
For this week's News, we talk Belle (which is on HBO Max), Paper Girls (on Amazon), and the Sandman (on Netflix), all of which a re new premiers in the past week or so! I found a cop; thread on Namor's MCU costume design on Twitter so we go over that goodness, then some brief DCEU project updates (which may change again soon for all we know), Marvel's Fantastic Four plans, the latest She-Hulk featurette, and the exciting new Andor trailer! The past week's comic book Picks (34:13) start with my VERY mixed feelings for Strange #4, but then VERY positive for the #2's of Public Doman, the Variants, and Sins of the Black Flamingo, plus Christopher Priest's Vampirella: Year One #1. Subsequently, this week's comic book Pulls (47:05) feature a LOT of new things, which is super exciting, and a few ongoing classics. Again, these are just a cross section of weekly Wednesday releases, so check out your local comic shop to see what else comes out that I don't discuss! Finally, we end with the Harley Quinn season 3 Premier (59:11), covering the first three episodes: Harlivy, There's No Ivy in Team, and the 83rd Annual Villy Awards! It's good to have this one back, and we'll be continuing to cover it as the show goes on each week! Harvey Guillen's Nightwing has already gone down as absolutely legendary, I loved it! I'll be back the week of Monday the 8th to cover the new week of comic picks and pulls, episode 4 of the Harley Quinn show, and all this crazy Warner/Discovery....stuff, which is still unfolding. Have a nice week, stay hydrated, and enjoy comics! We start as usual with the NEWS 0:07:37, beginning with a tribute to George Perez, who passed this week at age 67 after a lifelong career making waves in the industry. The Rumors 21:05 covers those Ezra Miller replacement theories, before going into Coming Soon 26:38! Here we cover Doctor Who's 14th Doctor announcement, Umbrella Academy Season 3 on Netflix and Volume 4 of the comic, the Red Sonja project, and Ahsoka project updates. That leaves us with Trailers 36:27, this week focusing on another for the upcoming Obi Wan Kenobi show on Disney+! We have a short list of PICKS 38:39 again this week, with the pick of the week being Giant Size X-Men: Thunderbird #1! Check out the link below to see more information on the choices of colors in John Proudstar's new look. This is followed by a brief Free Comic Book Day Wrap-Up 45:2, covering what came from the Big Two, and that cute Avatar comic. This week's comic PULLS 50:08 are technically already out, but I still wanted to include my week's pull list, and there's a lot of fun stuff out! As for other media, first is the MOON KNIGHT FINALE 52:26, followed by YOUNG JUSTICE S04E21 59:33, where another hero is lost. Finally, my Multiverse of Madness SPOILER-FREE REACTION 1:04:52 comes quickly before the full SPOILER review 1:07:04! I admit, I am quite critical, but even I had moments I really, really liked. We're pretty brief on news this week, talking Love and Thunder Marvel Legends leaks and a few bits of minor news on upcoming TV projects.
The previous week's comic book PICKS (0:16:00) include extended segments on WW The Amazons: Historia #2 and Strange #2 (0:29:53), before getting into a few others, all female-forward comics! This week's comic book PULLS 0:42:19 include only a few indie #1's and some solid others worth getting excited about, but the main draw of this episode is the MOON KNIIGT Ep2 breakdown 0:46:11, titled Summon the Suit. Like last week, I go through the relevant events on the episode and how it connects to the comics, the takes the MCU is doing on comic entities, and theories about what might be happening going forward. Finally, we end with the latest Young Justice S.4 0:57:34 ep., episode 17 titled: Leviathan Wakes. This episode wrapped up a lot of the current series arc, but there's still a long ways to go for these characters. My next episode will be coming out Wednesday the 13th or Friday the 16th this week, being the April Yancy St Special: Magik! An Overview of Illyana Rasputin. I have an enormous amount of information to cover, and I'm supremely excited to talk all things Magik! Keep an eye out for that later this week, otherwise the next regularly scheduled episode is coming Monday the 18th, covering Moon Knight episode 3, more Young Justice, new comic book day, and all the relevant news! Until then, I hope your spring is coming along well. Get some rest, get unabashedly sweaty, and get excited. Lot's more to come! Yes. Do I try and keep it within healthy limits of fandom? Also yes. But passion still abounds, and that is why we find ourselves here.
Clea is a character with a long history at Marvel Comics, who has recently been brought into the spotlight, arguably for the first time, in her first solo series, titled STRANGE. With this in mind, and the knowledge that she will likely be making her MCU debut this May in Multiverse of Madness, I felt it was time to share what I know about Clea's character. Starting off with her Family History 06:45, including her mother Umar and the Faltine line she comes from, and her father Orini and the Mhuruuks of the Dark Dimension. Discussion of various other women she encounters through her journeys in the comics 15:10 Clea's Team Affiliations & Other Relationships 24:18, including allies, enemies, the Defenders, and more. Her Personal (comic book) History 31:49, running through the important parts of her entire catalogue, hit by hit. and finally, STRANGE 0:47:26 which I still think should have been called Supreme. UPDATE OCTOBER '21: Clea's first comic appearance in 3 years! Scroll all the way to the bottom for this delightful update on her character. Key issue list now included at the top! Clea is one of the harder characters to do a reading list about, the way that I do them. With characters like Hellcat, Carol Danvers, and Angela, there are at least a few options of where to start, or anchor points in their history to read around, and get familiar with each era a little at a time. Patsy spent a long time as friend of the Avengers before even becoming Hellcat, then spent time with Defenders, got married, died, came back, and had a few definitive solo series' through the decades. Carol has a number of Hero names to read up on, plus a period of depowerment, and what came before the triggering of her Kree genetics. With Clea, she doesn't have any moments pulled out just for her, really, as every issue she's ever been in has been for the sake of someone else--usually Stephen Strange. Her powerset, her power-levels, even her identity wasn't clarified for decades, and all after her having been nameless for her first dozen or so appearances. But she was written to be delightfully intriguing; a spark of youthful energy in the twisted, aging, LSD-laced pages of the somber and responsible Doctor Stephen Strange. This doesn't make her any less interesting--in fact, it just makes me all the more certain we need a solid, definitive SOMETHING for Clea, and I won't deny I'd love to be given that chance, especially after having spent so much time--and continuing to spend ever-more time--reading up on all her appearances. The Read List that follows is a work in progress, as most of my lists always are. Since Clea doesn't have a whole lot of well-known anchor points in her history to work off of, I'm sticking with the traditional way of reading her comics--chronologically. Therefore, this list will take a while to get to anything Modern, though I have read a good bit of her modern appearances. Because I'm sticking with chronological, this time, if there's anything more towards the bottom you want to know about--send me an email! I'd love to do some reading research for you, and update it on Clea's list at the same time. Final note! This is also a work in progress in terms of editing. My notes as I read are a mess, usually, and I often forget to go back and clean it up. I'll do what I can as I go, but a lot is just going to be missed. I stick mostly to just the events in the issue that are directly relevant to the character in question, but again, hit me up if you need clarification on anything! Continue Reading for the complete appearances of Marvel's Clea! Greetings, listeners! This week's regular episode is a standard edition, with my Spider-Man: No Way Home full review coming on a special edition podcast later this week!
For now, we start with the news 0:07:34, featuring some reminders and Witcher content before talking about Hasbro's Multiverse of Madness tease by announcing the movie's toy wave 0:12:18, Marvel's new Sorcerer Supreme for the 616 universe 0:18:53, and the announcement of a big Punisher update and series 0:23:32. This week's comic book picks 0:26:23 include Wonder Girl #6, Demon Days: Rising Storm #1, Vampirella/Dracula: Unholy #1, and My Date with Monsters #2! There is also a little neg-sesh about Batgirls #1, which I hope gets better. Then it's on to the week's Pulls Pulls 0:35:35, which has a lot to look forward to! We get into Hawkeye episode 5 at 0:43:18, covering comic book references, easter eggs, theories and speculation, big reveals, and excitement for the finale this week! Don't forget to avoid the internet on Wednesday, if you want to avoid spoilers before you watch it yourself. Last, I cover the biggest points of DC's Marvel 2022 comix book solicitations 0:56:11, which has a lot of great material coming for DC Black Label and Wonder Woman's Trial of the Amazons event! I'll be back with a special edition episode by this Thursday the 23rd, covering Spider-Man: No Way Home! Other than that, the next regular podcast episode will be Monday the 27th, for our last regular episode of the year, covering the finale of Hawkeye, weekly comic picks and pulls, news, and anything else relevant to the show! If you'd like to donate to the podcast's 2022 PodBean fund, check out the links below! Titans Season 3 Finale @ 1:32:47, talking "Purple Rain" and season 4 speculation! I'll be back by tomorrow night, Tuesday the 26th, for episode 39A! We'll go over this week's comic book pull list, more MCU rumors and news, the first episodes of Young Justice S.3, Doom Patrol, and more! Till then, stay safe, and stay sweaty! Website/Blog: www.sensationalshegeek.weebly.com Apple Podcasts Podbean Spotify Instagram: @annawiththecomics Twitter: @savageshegeek YouTube: Sensational She-Geek Donation and All Other Links A Note on Clea of the Faltines.3/5/2021 I'd like to take a moment to address a blog I once found running a very popular series called "Clea Loves Sex."
For starters: Yes. She does. She isn't from Earth, although it seems the people of the Dark Dimension are...human? She discovers she is non-human with her mother's heritage, at least. Anyway, she is from the Dark Dimension. People there have magic, it would seem, and their world, ways, technologies, and cultures are wildly different, so it really makes sense that she might take some pride in this particular aspect that crosses over both cultures. It's something she didn't have to learn, adapt to, or discover as new when she arrived on Earth. So while she might dislike cars and phones and whatnot due to unfamiliarity, sex is familiar. Comfortable, on multiple levels. And, it gives Clea an opportunity to express her love to Stephen, something that she is constantly striving to prove and be worthy of. So yes. Clea does love sex. But writing an exploitative series on it, ultimately marking her as a "nympho" willing to sleep with any man who shows feelings for her, is not only inaccurate but also disrespectful to a character who has fought to be taken seriously for literal decades. Clea loves sex. But she also loves her friends, who she will go to extreme length for to protect and assist. She loves her father, her home, and her people, regardless of the often unfair and angry treatment towards her, their own Princess, through the ages. She loves to dress up for special occasions, not because she understands Earth fashion, but because she likes to please her loved ones with the effort she puts in for them. She loves animals, and cares for all living things. This love and care is particularly strong when it comes to other members of her gender, who she will fight for, tooth and nail, regardless of who it is that comes calling for her aid. And, I'm sure, Clea still loves Stephen Strange. The romantic part of that love has waxed and waned with her patience and sense of self-worth through the years, but the roots will never die; you don't just walk away from someone you intertwined your soul with for decades (another factor that was easily arguably an aphrodisiac in their relationship). While I don't think the writer of the blog's series was meaning to "slut-shame" Clea, I would definitely say he misinterpreted her character, or at least diminished it greatly for his own sexualization and kink preferences. To be clear, Clea of the Faltines is worth far more than any one man's tragically narrow fantasy of her. |
