I was really trying to avoid this, this week, but life has required me to stop and catch up with non-SSG things, so I didn't have time to do the pull list and spotlights the way i normally would. Instead, I'll do a VERY brief overview of what I'm reading, what I'm excited for, and who the spotlights were going to be on. Next week, however, already has me excited about writing the week's pull blurbs, so I have no doubt I'll get those done, no problem.
Here's the very brief, non-pretty rundown of this week in comics: fifteen comics seven indie 3 dawn of x 1 other marvel 2 DC Again, I'm not doing blurbs for this week's pulls, just some very quick-and-dirty chat about select comics from my list. Continue reading for the most basic pull list I've ever done!
Spotlight on Characters of Color: Ororo Monroe from Giant-Size X-Men: Storm #1. Everyone knows Storm, but have you ever taken the time to appreciate her as a character? Worshiped as a goddess in her home country, Storm joined the X-Men, easily earning her title as leader of the Morlocks, then beating Scott to be leader of the X-Men team. She's battled her own psyche, fellow heroes, and villains alike. She was Queen of Wakanda, for a time, holding her own against her powerful husband when the need arose. While she does not seem to hold a position of authority on Krakoa these days, she is the one who ceremonially introduces each newly reborn mutant back into their society. She is the mother, sister, and friend to all mutants, in some way. For as integral and loved as she is, in our world and the 616, it only makes sense that Ororo Munroe is at the front of the new mutant social construct.
Spotlight on LGBTQ+ Themes: Vampirella's Colorful Love Life. While this story focuses on a male character becoming close with Vampi, her sexuality is largely queer, with her dating mostly women. Spotlight on Women in Comics: Excalibur's Tini Howard. Howard is a bisexual woman and fantastic Dawn of X creator. She currently writes Excalibur, which kicks off X of swords before X-Men this week!
You Look Like Death: Tales From The Umbrella Academy #1
Gerard Way's first step back into writing comics since the scandal of his longtime friend and Dark Horse coworker, Scott Allie earlier this year. As far as I can tell, he hasn't made any kind of statement on Allie or his notoriously toxic behavior towards comic industry women, which is odd because Way himself has been outspoken about mistreatment of women in the music industry. Allie isn't involved with TUA anymore, thankfully, but I still feel a little weird going back to that world again, with nothing having been said. This is part one of a mini-series flashback spin-off about Seance, AKA Klaus Kargreeves!
Stillwater #1
Chip Zdarsky's latest indie venture, surrounding a town where no one dies. Zdarsky has written an impressive amount of comics that I enjoy, including Spiderman: Life Story, the ongoing Daredevil, and co-creating Sex Criminals.
Giant Sized X-Men: Storm #1
The saga of Storm in Dawn of X continues, and we learn the weather-witch's future. We know she's sick, but what are they going to do about it?
Vampirella: Trial of the Soul #1
One-shot story of Vampirella and a new villain, who has taken it upon himself to discover if the Drakulonian has a soul. If not, he has to destroy her.
Big Girls #2
I enjoyed the first issue of Big Girls, but am not fully sold on the series yet. Its brutal beyond a doubt, and seems to explore feminist themes in the opposite way that Man Eaters did--going to extremes about the horrific males in their society instead of a grand metaphor about the treatment of women.
Seven Secrets #2
While I liked the first issue of this series, I don't think it deserves the shocking, over-obsessive praise writer Tom Taylor has already received. Don't get me wrong, it was good and I like Taylor's writing, but it was in no way world changing, mind bending, or otherwise severely new to comics. Similar to MANY other stories, Seven Secrets is a fun read so far, but not worth stressing yourself over missing out, if you have/do.
Devil's Highway #3
Benjamin Percy is really, really good at writing horror, and Devil's Highway is a type of horror all-too familiar to many of us. Percy did massive research on the ins and outs of trucker communities, including how they're all interconnected, and the disturbing rumors and incidents that occur around long-haul trucking stops. He's written a mystery reminiscent of a child's nighttime road-trip nightmares, where massive engines hold more secrets than the trailer behind them. This is issue 3 of 5, so it isn't a lifetime commitment of a comic, either.
Hellions #4
No one needs reminding why I love Madelyne Pryor, who will be again appearing in this issue. I have a feeling it'll be Kwannon against the Goblin Queen as her team of Hellions desperately remove themselves from her grasp. All I want, seriously, is Maddie to have a chance at a role in Dawn of X more than these three issues.
Thor #7
Donny Cates has wrapped up his first story arc of Thor, which was fun, if a little derivative. We all already know how powerful Thor is, many of the scenes where Cates spent PAGES showing his powers was a little pointless. He's All-Father, God of Thunder, and now wielder of the Power Cosmic. He's powerful, we get it. This isn't DC, move on. I'm hoping in moving forward with Thor, we'll see a lot more Lady Sif and Beta Ray Bill.
Once & Future #1
That awkward moment when you kill a thundering monster, only to discover it was the only thing that could have stopped a bigger, badder monster. A fantasy tale with a twist, this series is great for any fans of Arthurian tales, mythology, or Indian Jones style adventures.
Excalibur #12
Tini Howard takes on the first prelude to X of Swords!
X-Men #12
Prelude two to X of Swords
Catwoman #25
One more issue until Jenny Frison starts her variant cover run on Catwoman! Selina is still on some South American island, making good with the locals, including a mythical(?) big-cat!
Detective Comics #1027
Remember when all those male comics creators posted their "comics pledge" that they'd pay attention and make sure women get their fair share in the comics industry? This isn't the first anniversary book since that time, and still it only features two women writers. Come on, DC, do better.
