The two-issue pick list for the week sits at 0:28:53, covering my intense enthusiasm for My Date With Monsters #1 and Batman: Imposter #2. On to the main event: Disney+ Day coverage at 0:40:04! I start it off with a solemn reminder that we are in late stage capitalism and corporations are evil by definition, so keep that in mind while we celebrate some of these amazing projects. For the 3 upcoming shows we got new "first looks" of, I've gone into some intense comic book history, explaining the origins, special characteristics, and history of She-Hulk (0:41:23), Moon Knight (0:50:53), and Ms Marvel (0:58:23). The rest of the Disney+ Day announcements are covered at 1:04:40, including Obi-Wan Kenobi, Marvel Zombies, What If...? Season 2, I Am Groot (with Groot's publication history), animated newcomer X-Men '97, Echo (focusing on deaf indigenous character Maya Lopez), Agatha: House of Darkness (with some delightful topic speculation), Ironheart, Armor Wars, animated Spider-Man Freshman Year, and the long-awaited Secret Invasion. Weekly Comics Pull List,+ Marvel & DC December Comic solicits!9/27/2021 Pull List @ 0:16:40
Marvel Comics December @ 0:42:22 DC Comics December @ 1:04:00 Good Monday, and Happy Autumn! This week's "A" episode kicks off with one big bit of news, focusing on the trailer for Hit-Monkey, coming to Hulu in November! I go through the comics facts about all the relevant players in this discussion. After the regular weekly comic book pull list, I'm able to discuss both Marvel and DC comics announced for December release! While I'm not going through every solicitation of the month, I've picked out a few from either publisher that seemed interesting or worth mentioning. While the Marvel discussion is longer, there's more variety in what I'm excited for at DC! I'll be back this coming Friday, September 24th with another episode focusing on the the week's comic book Picks, the Wednesday episode 7 of What If...? on Disney+, and the Thursday episode of Titans on HBO Max! Have a peaceful equinox, find balance in your life as the days and nights become equal in length, and find time to get sweaty about your hobbies. Ep.32A: Comics Pull List, Marvel and DC Comics in November, Black Canary on HBO Max, and more!9/27/2021 Good Monday! It's been a quiet weekend so I changed things up a touch with the podcast format, starting off with the news and rumors segment! The news this week brings us the official announcement of a Black Canary movie on HBO Max starring Journee Smollet, the casting of Poison Ivy for Batwoman, and rumors of Multiverse of Madness and the Flash movie!
Then it's off to the comic pull list, where I am happy to be able to spotlight a off number of comics with excellent character and/or creator representation! That list includes two Mirka Andolfo projects, Joelle Jones' Wonder Girl, Peach Momoko's Demon Days reimagining of the Marvel Universe, and more! It's a wonderful week for positive representation. Finally, the last thing I talk about on this episode are the November Marvel and DC comics solicitations. Marvel's list includes a number of one-shots and mini series', while DC's is a whole lot of bat-family goodness! There's so much to look forward to at the end of the year, and always more being added on! I'll be back this Friday, September 3rd for the weekly B episode, covering the comic book Pick list, What If...? Episode 4, Titans episode 6, and anything else relevant for discussion! Have a chill week, stay positive, and sweat it out about comics! This week's "A" Episode is appearing on Tuesday due to technical difficulties, of sorts. We kick things off this week with the usual weekly comic book pull list, including I am Batman #0, Mamo #2, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, and more!
After that is the discussion of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad! Spoilers and mild disappointment abound. What? Disappointment?? Yep. I try to explain as clearly as I can why I only watched the movie once over the weekend. However, my discussion also includes summaries of each character's comic iteration compared with the movie version! After that is a talk exploring episode 5 of the Bad Batch, which has its series finale this Friday. "Return to Kamino" held a number of key reveals, some curious teases, and a cliffhanger ending! Finally, I clap back at some commenter who argued She-Hulk MUST be tortured to leave the Avengers, and how that IS bad writing. If I can come up with a more compelling story than the professional writer, maybe things aren't going too well. I'll be back this coming Friday, August 13th with episode 29B, which will focus on the comic book pick list, the initial episode of What If...? on Disney+, and potentially the season premier of Titans season 3! Till then, stay hydrated, stay healthy, and stay sweaty. Today, we kick things off with the weekly comic book pull list. I'm delighted to be doing spotlights on comics of excellent representation again this week, including Maria Llovet's Porcelain, Victoria Douglas' Cinnamon, Taboo and B. Earl's Spirit Rider, the second Horizon Zero Dawn series, and more! This week has the final issue of Maurene Goo and Takeshi Miyazawa's Silk series, the second-to-last of Sensational Wonder Woman, and a good deal of other #1's!
Then it's on to Friday's episode of the Bad Batch--ep. 14. While it ended with a serious problem for the Batch, it was an intriguing episode as we close in to the end of this 16-episode series! After that is my discussion of the new trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage! It looks pretty fun, but Woody Harrelson is no doubt going to totally steal the show. Finally, I end the episode with a discussion spurred by a recent online article/interview with Matt Damon, and the problematic ideas it presented. TL;DR: the end of theaters is not the end of entertainment media, and the writer should have done some--any-- comic book research. I'll be back this Friday, August 6th with episode 28B, focusing on comic book Picks from this week's NCBD! Don't forget Friday is also the premier of James Gunn's the Suicide Squad, in theaters and on HBO Max! I'll be watching it then and reviewing it on my episode next Monday, 29A, on Aug. 9th! Till then, stay hydrated, don't cast judgement, and get sweaty over your hobbies. Today's podcast starts with the comic book pick list, including The Many Deaths of Laila Starr, Superman and the Authority, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and more! I had a great time with some of the reads from this week, and am so excited to go over this discussion!
After that is the discussion of the Loki Assembled behind-the-scenes episode, which was far superior to the first two! We got some delightful insights to some of the best parts of the show, and enough crew interviews to get a good feel of the making of the show. For news this week, we're talking Dune's trailer, castings for Batgirl and an unknown (but exciting!) Wakanda Forever role, and update on the Galactus HasLab project! I'll be back this coming Monday, July 26th, for another A episode featuring the weekly comic book pick list, tonight's episode of the Bad Batch, and more news and speculation! I'll be back with a new episode this coming Friday, July 23rd, where I will discuss the week's comic book pick list, the Loki behind-the-scenes episode, and anything else newsworthy! Hello and happy first day of summer! Today's "A" episode starts with the regular weekly comic book pull list, including 18 comics from a variety of publishers! My spotlights on representation this week are for Marvel's Voices: Pride #1 Silk #4, Harley Quinn #4, Captain Marvel #29, and Eros and Psyche #4. Between excellent female creators and interesting female characters, this is a big week for women and the queer community in comics!
Then I go over this past Friday's episode of the Bad Batch, episode 8, where Crosshair finally catches up to the gang, and a fan-favorite (although certainly not my own favorite) character from Clone Wars makes a sneaky return. The DCEU had some exciting BTS-pics released this week, some official and some leaked from set. The picture of behind-the-scenes on the Flash movie set show some interesting insights and leave room for tons of speculation, while the official Shazam Family photo for Fury of the Gods makes me excited for a much more mature take! Finally, this morning saw the release of the first official Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins movie trailer! While I'm far from being a Joe's sweaty, I know enough to be able to appreciate the movie for what it is, and have a few insights to the actors' histories. I'll be back this Friday, June 25th, for another episode focusing on Wednesday's Loki episode 3, the comic book Pick list, and whatever news or speculation breaks between now and then! In the meantime, have a blessed solstice, and remember to get sweaty. Website/Blog: www.sensationalshegeek.weebly.com Apple Podcasts Podbean Spotify Instagram: @annawiththecomics Twitter: @savageshegeek YouTube: Sensational She-Geek Hello and Happy Friday! Today's "B" episode starts with the weekly comic pick list, including Karmen #4, the Hellfire Gala X-Men comics, and a few more great additions. The main event, however, is the Loki episode 1 discussion! I'm covering comic factoids, references, theories, character names and general plot points for what was an excellent pilot episode! Loki episodes on Disney+ premier on Wednesdays, and I will discuss them on Friday's going forward.
After a brief discussion of the questionable Superman and Lois episode 9 reveal, it's on to comic book culture news and updates, including the title announcement for Aquaman 2, the first news of War of the Rohirrim, a new arc of the Man-Eaters comic, Marvel Venom and Hulk comic series updates, the Millarworld on Netflix as well as their upcoming live-action Cowboy Bebop show, and finally, the Titania casting news for She-Hulk on Disney+! I wrap this one up with a quick walk-through of this year's Eisner Nominee list--the Eisner awards are the Oscars of the comic-writing world, so it's a big deal and well celebrated each year. Congratulations to all the nominees! I'll be back this coming Monday, June 14th, for episode 22A, which will include the coming comic book pull list, the new episode of the Bad Batch (premiering today on Disney+), and whatever news and speculation breaks between now and then! In the meantime, stay cool this warm, late-spring weekend, but DO get sweaty about comics! Happy...er, Sunday?! SO sorry I got behind on this week's "B" podcast, but life got in the way! It's here, now, with an extra half-hour more run-time than usual! Whoops?
This episode starts with the usual Comic Book Pick List, featuring things that I loved or thought were noteworthy out of this week's new comic book releases. The pick list discussion includes a solid chunk of time dedicated to this week's X-Men #20 before diving into Beta Ray Bill #3, Made in Korea #1, Monstress #34, and Strange Adventures #10, among others! With great reads comes great discussions! Then it's on to the week's media consumption, including catching up on the Bad Batch and Superman and Lois, my basic thought son Hulu's Modok, and the finale episodes of Black Lightning! For news, casting announcements for Secret Invasion, Sony's Kraven, and HBO's Green Lanterns are joined by news of an Okoye origin show coming to Disney+! Finally, the episode wraps up with some fun (?) MCU-related rumors, including one about December's Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the other about the newly announced Captain America 4--an both involve the rumored villains! I'll be back this coming TUESDAY, June 1st, with an episode going over the week's comic book pull list, as well as whatever more new and speculation gets out until then! In the meantime, thank you for listening, and for your patience with this episode's lateness. Wherever you're from, have a delightful, nerd-sweat-filled weekend!
I refuse to hide in shame when I admit that three of my top-five picks this week are technically Dawn of X books. What can I say? Johnathon Hickman knows how to put together a universe.
X-Force, Marauders, and Empyre: X-Men are mt three mutant-based picks, leaving the other slots to this week's Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel. It also doesn't escape me how four fifths of this list are Marvel properties, but that is also easy to explain. Marvel's theory of "the more, the merrier" that they've had in recent years has excellent payoff, as far as I can see. There's something for everyone, no doubt about that. But let's not get too caught up in which publisher may or may not be better than others. When it comes down to it, Marvel and DC are both massive conglomerates that care only about their bottom dollar and give very little effort in terms of creator benefits. Dark sides of the industry aside, this was a pretty good week for comics! I'll admit that many of the other issues faltered for me, and many felt unimportant or like filler. These five, however, were the obvious choices that stood out for me in story, art, and overall quality, Continue Reading to find out more about my top picks from the week! WARNING: SPOILERS!
It's another banger of a comics week, with books of all kinds! At Marvel, the EMPYRE event wages on, leaving both excellence and stupidity in it's wake; plus X-books, some spiders, and a few unjustly digital-first released books finally getting their print release. DC has two doomed books, Mariko Tamaki's second issue of WONDER WOMAN, and more METAL! The indie stack is fairly well represented, with a new #1, Matt Fraction and the Dodsons' ADVENTUREMAN, and more Image books from Christopher Priest!
You may note I didn't do a "pick list" for last week. Usually I try to do them on Thursday, after binging the weekly comics by that afternoon. This week, however, I went on a road-trip Thursday instead! We went to the Bay Area for toy and comic book hunting, and I am pleased to report we found some INCREDIBLE collection pieces! I'll be writing somewhat about those eventually, but for now, onto the coming week's pulls! Continue Reading to see all the comics goodies I have picked out this week!
Looking at my pull list of 17 comics this week, I have to wonder. Is this sustainable?
Ideally I'd say of course a pull list like this is manageable, but the entire world is running very different from the world we had a year ago today, so I can't make any promises. What I can say is the series' I eventually DO drop from my pull list will be because of their quality first and foremost. I have seventeen comics on my pull list this week, and another beginning of a series I'm debating picking up or not. What's great about getting a bigger pull list every week is that the variety of comics you end up reading is so much more broad and satisfying. This week I have comics of ALL KINDS on my pull list, and I'm pumped to talk about every single one of them. I'm also excited about this week's Representation Spotlights, as we have some truly wonderful examples of representation in the comics industry. I've picked out Far Sector to speak on people of color as comics creators as well as in comics themselves; Horizon Zero Dawn for it's female creative team and female-driven plot; and I'm even doing a small commentary on male bisexuality in our masculinity obsessed society, with Sex Criminals and Deadpool (hell yeah Deadpool is queer!) as comic book examples. Continue Reading to dive into the wild wild world of comics in my pull list this week!
I've been saying it for ages, and even wrote it on this site at one point: Wonder Woman needs a female writer, and I'll add it to my pull list when that happens.
Ladies and germs, the day has finally come! On July 29th, DC released Wonder Woman #759, the first issue to be written in a run by Mariko Tamaki. Joyfully, I'm familiar with Tamaki's writing from HULK/She-Hulk at Marvel. She's also known for DC's Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass and Supergirl: Being Super with Joelle Jones, plus a number of other comics and graphic novels. To say that I was excited going in would be an understatement, as saying I'm happy with how it turned out would be. I loved this first issue so much, I say up last night with notes about WHY it was so good spiraling though my brain, and writing it all out before bed. With a few additions, continue reading for my full review of Wonder Woman #759 by Mariko Tamaki, with art by Mikel Janin and colors by Jordie Bellaire!
Folks, this has week has been a bit of a bummer--even aside from things that hit the national news.
In the comics world, DC announced the cancellation of 3 formerly ongoing series': Batgirl, Batman & the Outsiders, and Justice League: Odyssey. You may note right away that none of these were included in my last pull lists, and you'd be correct. I'm about 3 issues behind on JLO, and to be honest, only recently learned author Cecil Castellucci (of one of my all-time favorite mini-series, Female Furies) was writing Batgirl. But I only just started B&tO in volume form with the hopes to catch up, and love how Brian Edward Hill used a Batman series to promote some often forgotten but ultimately very meaningful characters. While weak excuses were offered as to the cancellation reasons, I (and more than a few comics blog sites) find them all to be just that: excuses. Additionally, Marvel announced the abrupt cancellation of one of my top-5 current ongoing books, Strikeforce. I wrote just last week that Strikeforce is one of the best books at Marvel, and after reading last week's Empyre and Avengers, I can easily say it's the best team they have. The excuse offered by Marvel was basically some fudged timing, which has been worked around in the past for other books. In the light of these cancellations, I will be adding the last of these 3 series' to my pull lists, regardless if I catch up in time. They each represented a marginalized sector of the comics industry, if not multiple, and their cancellations feel like major leaps backwards in comics progression. What #ComicsPledge? Anyway, there are still comics to read, so Continue Reading to see what IS coming out this week! A Note on FEMALE FURIES1/14/2020 As a woman who reads comics, this industry doesn't revolve around people like me as their target audience. Which is something women are sadly used to--while we're welcome in the community, women are often seen as second-class comic nerds, as if our gender determines what our interests should be, and how much of those interests we're allowed to know about. Clearly, this isn't the reality, and tons of women of all ages are interested and work/live their lives in comics., regardless of the male domination. This means that when something DOES get actively targeted towards female comic readers, it feels like a gift from the creators made just for us. To clarify, I'm talking about traditional comics themes and characters, but written to actively include female readers in the target audience. One recent example of this is the limited series, Female Furies. It was set up for success among female "sweaties" like me from the start: female driven creative team, female leads, accurate female relationships, recognizable metaphors for our own society, and best of all--it was set up with the backdrop of classic DC comics characters and stories (Hello, Apokalips). In fact, it even includes the original Jack Kirby source material from the old-school Mister Miracle and New Gods books in the back of the collected edition. Needless to say, I tore through the volume in an afternoon, and it left me with chills. I loved it endlessly and want to breathe it's spirit into every comic reader who will listen. But somehow, even through all of this, female Furies is misunderstood. Continue Reading to learn what I mean by that, and why Female Furies is such a perfect battle cry to women everywhere. It's a short week for comics! Short is relative, I suppose, and for what my lists have been recently, this is definitely short. It's also very Marvel heavy--of the seven books I'm reading this week, four are Marvel, one is DC, one Dynamite, and one Image. Not the variety I'd normally like to have in my reading material, but when the list is so small, the variety will be narrow as well. That isn't to say there's nothing good coming out this week at all! This week marks the first issue of Marvel's third Gamerverse book for Spider-Man, Black Cat Strikes. I'm a big fan of Black Cat, so this series will hopefully fill a long-empty hole where my female Marvel anti-heroes should live. Additionally, this week has the next issue of Undiscovered Country, which has caused quite a stir even on just it's third issue, and two other favorites from my pull list: Revenge of the Cosmic Ghost Rider and Vampirella/Red Sonja (check out the Babs Tarr variant to the left!). It's a smaller, but definitely fun week in comics! Continue Reading to see what's good this week! PS--Extra content at the very end, don't miss out! PPS-- the 19th is my birthday! I don't expect you to do anything with this information. NEW Comic Books for JANUARY 1ST, 2020!12/29/2019 Happy New Year! I've been AWOL for a week or two, as last week didn't have much by way of comics, and I was still pretty swamped with work and hobbies through the holidays. Plus, what an INSANE week we had just before Christmas, with average pull lists of dedicated readers reaching over twenty books that Wednesday. Thea year is starting off a little easier on our wallets than that, but that's not to say the books being released are any less interesting. In fact, the year starts off strong this week with three new series' that I'll be reading, among the other pulls. Last year, one of my goals was the broaden my comic book reading list--add variety. I feel like this year I've done a great job of that, and because of it, I've been reading some really excellent books. This year, I'll grow off that sentiment, and say my comic book reading goal is to not waste my time (and money) on series' that aren't what I wished for. In short, I'll be continuing to read just as much and more, but I'll get a little picky. If I'm not feeling a series, that's fine, there are plenty more to replace it with. Adding on to that as well, I already have a few creator-owned titles on my list for their debut in March, so I expect my comic pull list t be very rounded out by the end of 2020. With all that out of the way, continue reading to find out what's good for the first week of comics in 2020! New Comic Book Pulls DECEMBER 4th, 201911/30/2019 If there's anything that's true about my life today, it's that I'm thoroughly enjoying my weekly comics. It feels like around every corner, there's another excellent new series sitting there, waiting to be explored. These past few weeks have been BUSTING at the seams with new comics, so this week's nine is a nice quieter week. Three more X-Books, as it looks like Hickman has his team on 2-week intervals, Tom King's second-to-last every issue of Batman, and the well-regarded creative team of Thor is back with what promises to be a legendary one-shot with some of the best characters. It's officially December now, which means the countdown to 2020 is fully on! What should I do for the end of the year, a favorites summary? Top-5 comics of the year? Top-10? In any case, Continue Reading for this week's pulls! NEW Comic Book Pulls for November 25th, 201911/25/2019 I can't believe November is almost over! The past few months have been flying by, marked only by the massive influx of weekly comics. Last week was a doozy. I still haven't finished everything the week gave us, even as I write the update for the following week! What's truly remarkable about that is everything I have read from this past mega-week of comics was all brilliant. I didn't find myself lacking in quality material among the incredible stack of books last week gave us. This week has a lesser eleven issues I'll be reading, and even then, only that many because I'm throwing a few extras in. There are key issues of things coming out that I want to catch, and you won't want to miss them either! Continue reading to find out what's good this week in comics! Nothing is slowing down here but the year. This week I'm talking about THIRTEEN different comics that come out Wednesday. I know I talk about having challenged myself at the beginning of the year to read more, and more variety of, comic books, but what has that really resulted in? My reading lists each week are much longer on average, and I've started this site to host my comic book babbling. I was really interested in reading this series as a Black Label fan, but also because the timing of it coming out aligns with the 3-issue Black Label series by Steven Stejic, Harleen. The two takes on what is ultimately the same character's story makes for good comparison on each author's idea of who Harley is and how she got to the point we are all well-enough familiar with, Harley Quinn. The author of Criminal Sanity is Kami Garcia, known for her Young Adult series, Beautiful Creatures, about a teenage boy in the South who falls for a new student at his school. The town is highly superstitious, and with good reason: the school's newcomer is from a family of actual witches. I read the first book when I was in high school myself. and can attest Garcia is a highly imaginative mind and capable of writing great romance, great tragedy, and great darkness. With this knowledge, I am even more prepared to breathe in the beauty that is her take on Harley Quinn and the Joker's complex relationship. I'll be going over all the basic plot points and characterization from Kami Garcia in her new series! Hold on tight, it's going to get sweaty! Continue Reading for the full review! |
