I swear, I had every intention to do my usual long-form comic book post this week. Life got in the way, and I actually kind of like trying it a different way. Maybe it’ll keep me from getting stale. Theres a lot of books again this week, although mostly Marvel issues. In fact, so far Marvel has kicked off 2020 by being the heaviest releaser of comics, far and beyond other publishers. It’s great, because I clearly like Marvel c but I really feel like I’m missing a little differentiation brought to you by indie comics. In any case, these are my recommended comics this week! It’s a number of first issues and one-shots, as well as some just plain good reads. Continue Reading for this weeks comics! Let’s kick off the week with what few indie books I do have on my pull list.
Invisible Kingdom is a Berger books release from G Willow Wilson, one of the modern eras more well-known and celebrated female creators. I ran through the first 8 issues of this series over my short winter “break”, and am really intrigued. It’s a world far from ours but also frighteningly close, where one single delivery corporation has managed to all-but-rule the universe. On the opposing side, a theology of owning nothing comes from a shockingly powerful church. Neither side is good, so where do you run when they’re both after you? Red Sonja and Vampirella meet Betty and Veronica #8 is here at last! I’m honestly going to need to review issue 7 before jumping in. If I recall, we just had the behind-scenes reveal that the murderous plot in Greendale came from none other than Vampirella’s sister. Apparently the two have a terrible history, and I can’t wait to see how this plays out! That's it for proper indie books! Here’s the ONE DC book I’m reading this week: The Last God #4. This story is playing out as a proper medieval quest: a past that is a lie and unravels as the story goes on, a young warrior who wants to prove himself and has a questionable lineage, a queen with no country, and a variety of other-worldly species and beings. Not to mention the constant threat of being found and tortured by living vines that want to make you part of their bramble. Continue with this book this week to find out some of the secrets of Queen Cyanthe and her companions! Which leaves us with Marvel. Hold onto your butts! Thor #2 by Donny Cates is probably my TOP pick of the week! Issue one was everything I hoped for and more. Now, spoiler alert! Thor is the new Herald of Galactus. As king, he cannot go about finding planets for deathbringer to feed on, but as Herald, he has no choice. I can’t wait to find out how the new All-Father is going to continue his kingly duties while constantly working against them. Meanwhile, we are still left wondering about this “black winter”, which will supposedly destroy all in its path. Is it a plague, a sickness, or something that consumes? More answers this week I hope! Even though I didn’t exactly include it on my pull list when issue 1 came out, this week I have Jessica Jones: Blindspot on my list with issue 2. It was released a few years back on digital format only, and this is its first time in print. The first issue ended with Jess being set up for murder, then winding up shot in the head herself. Who the hell got the one-up on one of the greatest P.I's? And, how is Jess going to move on from this? Written by the ever-glorious Kelly Thompson (Deadpool, Captain Marvel, West Coast Avengers, and soon Black Widow!), I’m really glad I read issue 1. Hawkeye: Freefall #2 by Matthew Rosenberg is up top of this list when it comes to most anticipated, as well. As a massive fan of the Matt Fraction Hawkeye run, I thought it would be really difficult to find another Clint-based series that I enjoy as much. Well, not hard for Rosenberg, because the man did it one one issue. We saw undercover ops, battle banter, on-brand self deprecation, and my favorite— unhinged team-ups! I’ve been looking forward to this issue since halfway through the first. Who is the new Ronin, and more importantly, will we have any more humorous hero cameos? I wasn’t planning on reading the new Dr. Strange series at all, but found it in my hands one dull day at lunch. It’s pretty good! Not yet on par with the Donny Cates/Chris Bachallo series a few years back, but there are definite similarities and promise for more growth and development. Plus, it's "Dr" instead of "doctor" because he's actually doing some work as a surgeon again! This week is #2, where we’ll hopefully be getting more ideas of what to expect in this series. The Jury is still out, but I liked what I saw, so I’m going with it. Scream: Curse of Carnage #3 comes out this week. After enjoying her Absolute Carnage crossover, I hesitantly picked up the first issue of this follow-up. And, I’m so glad I did. This series is gritty, showing a desperate, solitary Andi Benton as she deals with her own traumas and that of her new symbiote Scream. To make matters worse, someone is coming for her, and they’re not afraid of using dastardly tricks to ensnare her. With Venom on “Venom Island”, the solicitation makes me think we’ll see Scream try her hands at heroing, at least for a while. I can’t wait to see how that all turns out! In all honesty, this new Spider-Verse comic isn’t what I expected. It’s for sure a simpler take on other books with the same name. Instead of a sprawling journey through the multiverse to save the world, we have Miles Morales swinging about various realities, helping out where he can. We had Spider-Ma’am, Sp//dr, and now we’re on to the old west! I love everything the Spider-Verse allows. Countless realities where your creativity and imagination knows no bounds. This series is a fun trip with little-to-no risk, so all-ages approved! Don’t take my word for that. This brings us to this week’s Dawn of X titles! Of the four being released, I’ve got 3 on my pull list (dropped Fallen Angels after my frustration over X-23’s treatment hit an all time high). To start, is X-Men #5. We last saw Xavier, Magneto, and Apocalypse give a firm line to other government representatives, saying no, we will not go quietly into that long night. It was an incredible issue, no doubt preparing us for whatever big reveal is this week. So far in the Dawn of X books, I’ve had 2 favorite moments that belong to X-Force and New Mutants 5. With both those coming out again this week, I’m hoping for some similarly crazy good moments. In X-Force, I imagine we’ll be seeing if the lone surviving henchmen was telling the truth, or if he’s just more problems for the mutants. Wolverine is no doubt mended, as is Domino, so things should be getting back in action soon. The solicitation mentions Beast taking matters into his own hands, which is exciting for two reasons. First, we never get to see Beast doing his thing outside of a lab anymore, so I’m excited for a little character development. And second, artist Joshua Cassara draws Beast with the most beautiful coloring, I can’t get enough! While the last issue of New Mutants took place in space, this weeks #6 is back on Earth, where Armor and her friends have gotten themselves into a small mess. With anti-mutant forces closing in and hostages of children held, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of options. Buuut I can’t wait and see how they save the day! Interior art by Flaviano Armentaro has been killing it, and I’m so looking forward to more. This week also brings us THREE new chapters of “The End”. As I understand it, The End is a group of one-shots showing the last days of various Marvel characters in dark universes—you could almost compare them to DC’s Dark Multiverse retellings. Funny how that happens. This week we have Deadpool: The End, showing how the Merc with a Mouth will finally meet his end. In Captain Marvel: The End, we’ll see Carol returning to Earth after 50 years in space, meeting the children of her old friends on an Earth that might not remember her. And in Doctor Strange: The End, Steven Strange journeys through a city without magic. These three issues promise to be extraordinarily unique and chock-full of hints, references, and fan service. As my final pull for the week, I have Avengers #30! It took, what, 4 issues for Jason Aaron to reveal the new Starbrand? We finally found out last week, and it’s a pregnant woman! This brings up so many questions. Is she the chosen one, or her child? It would make sense why she was in so much pain, if she’s about to give birth to the new Starbrand. But then, how can a baby protect the earth? If it is the mother, what will happen to her baby? So many questions! At this point, almost every character on Aaron’s Avengers team is tweaked somehow: Brood Thor, Captain “Corsair” Rogers, Natalia the War Widow, She-Hulk’s new power-up threads, and Blade encased in Boy-Thing! Gotta say, there was a moment I almost dropped this series, and I’m so glad I didn’t. Shits getting wild, yo! Thats it for this weeks pulls! Some super great reading material once again, so get to reading and stay sweaty!
