My favorite news of the whole Expo, I will proudly admit, is the new information we got on Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase Four. We had a good amount of reveals at Comic Con San Diego this year, but with D23 so close behind, I knew there was going to be some juicy news. Kevin Feige took the stage to talk all things Marvel! One of my favorites they announced at Comic Con San Diego this year is the animated series, What If...? "What If...? is based on a comic series we've loved for years," Feige says. "The 23 films you know of the MCU are going to showcase one change in each episode." If you're familiar with Marvel Comics, you'll recognize What If...? as their title that explores other ways things may have gone down, usually in large comic events. In my opinion its one of the things that makes Marvel so uniquely Marvel. What If...? captures the creative spirit Marvel has encouraged in their readers since the start. It promotes a healthy use of the imagination, asking questions, and boldly trying new things. If the What If...? series is half as creative and interesting as the comic versions, you can bet you won't want to miss a single episode! Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) narrates, to add to the comic book magic. They gave brief teases of the other impending Marvel Disney+ shows, Loki and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. We know the Loki show takes place after his 2012 self escapes New York with the Tessarect in Endgame, but there isn't too much further information given today. The latter is said to delve into the pair's lives both before and after Endgame. I imagine this means we'll be seeing a lof of history of Bucky as The Winter Soldier in his Soviet soldier state as well as some Sam Wilson flying in the war as a soldier. Fingers crossed that final scene of Endgame between Steve and Sam wasn't just a tease and we get Sam Wilson Captain America! WandaVision was described as "half-sitcom and half epic-MCU-adventure", leaving me to guess this will be mainly Wanda Maximoff using her chaos magic to en-Vision (sorry) what her and the Vision's lives would be like if they had been able to elope together. Scarlet Witch in the comics has a BIG history with letting her chaos magic get the best of her, so I'm guessing here we'll get some adverse effects to be cleaned up in the following Multiverse of Madness film. My girl Kat Dennings was announced as returning as Darcy Lewis and Randall Park reprising his role as Jimmy Woo for Multiverse of Madness concludes other news for the Phase Four MCU titles...that we already knew about. And they announced three new Disney+ Marvel TV titles! Truly, we are blessed nerds. The new additions are Ms. Marvel (featuring Kamala Khan), Moon Knight, and She Hulk! Ummm hello? Good timing on the new site name anyone? I am absolutely TICKLED at the announcement of a series about my girl Jennifer Walters. They're saying it will show equal parts her life as a lawyer and a superhero, which gives a pretty good idea of the direction they'll go with her character. Now, excuse me while I go read fan-casting rumors until we get more deets! Before I get too carried away, here's some more Disney+ title announcements made at Disney's D23 Expo today:
Last in my updates from Day One: Star Wars! As a huge life-long fan of the franchise, it's been a rough couple of years. The Sequel Trilogy, as I'm going to refer to it, has been coming out to incredibly mixed reviews. Similar audience responses came after both Rogue One and Solo. Rumors of new series' and trilogies have been rampant, usually ending in disappointment. A few months back, the long awaited, highly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi movie was announced as being cancelled, and hearts of fans everywhere were crushed. If you, like me, were heartbroken at that news, hold on to your bonnet my friend because Lucas Film President Kathleen Kennedy has officially announced an Obi Wan Kenobi Disney+ live action series to start filming 2020! Guys. Guys. We're getting an Obi-Wan TV show. I literally dreamed of this happening! From what I can logically piece together, this series will be based after Revenge of the Sith. It'd be pretty neat to see a more mature Obi-Wan living on Tatooine while keeping a watchful but distant eye on a very young Luke Skywalker. Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as the lead character, but no other casting news has been announced. While not in any way breaking news, Jon Favreau spoke of his live-action series for Star Wars universe, The Mandalorian, and we got our first official trailer. This project is starring Pedro Pascal as the title character, and includes Giancarlo Esposito, Carl Weathers, Taika Waititi, and Gina Carano. As described by Favreau, The Mandalorian is comparable to old Westerns or Samurai movies. On stage, he said, “I pitched Kathleen Kennedy on a show that takes place after the Empire has fallen, and everybody is celebrating, except there’s no central government, so everything falls into chaos.” After watching the trailer, the hype is real. I truly believe this is going to be the Star Wars show we have all been waiting for. The Mandalorian will drop on Disney+ opening day, November 12th! And just real quick, they talked briefly about a third live action series for Disney+ that will star Diego Luna as his character from Rogue One, Cassian Andor, and show his life before the film. While this felt a little out of the blue when they first announced it in November, I actually really like the idea. Cassian was a character introduced to us in Rogue One by way of killing someone who just helped him, a surprising move when you first see the movie. It opens a lot of questions about the character that aren't answered, so it makes sense they'd want to fill in those gaps. This spin-ff is describes a a "rousing spy-thriller" exploring a world of "espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire." In the animated Star Wars world, the long adored Clone Wars series is also getting a seventh season on Disney+! The first five seasons origianlly oremiered on Cartoon Network before the show moved to Netflix for the sixth season in 2014. I watched the show when it arrived on Netflix the first time and fell in love. Not only is the showrunner Dave Filoni marvelously versed in Star Wars lore, the show stars in part the super-inspirational Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano. Eckstein founded clothing and lifestyle brand Her Universe in 2010, which works with female artists and designers to create sci-fi and fantasy themed clothing and accessories targeted at women and girls. The annoucement of a seveth season of The Clone Wars is a beautiful cherry on top of this Star Wars-shaped sundae. All in all, an amazing first day to one of the biggest Expos of the year, not to mention one of the busiest weekends for geeks! Whatever your geek flavor may be, they'll probably have something for you this weekend at Disney's D23. Now get a good night's sleep, kids, more sweaty content from D23 tomorrow!
