Happy Monday *the 3rd * everyone! This podcast episode was pre-recorded, so this morning's Marvel movie title announcements will be discussed on Fridays 16B episode, alongside the Falcon and the Winter Soldier Behind-the-Scenes episode!
This week's "A" episode starts off by covering a few of my comic picks from last week, including Silk, Beta Ray Bill, and a few fun others! Then I go straight into this week's Pull List, discussing the notable comics coming out this week, which includes a new Red Sonja series by legendary creators, more America Chavez, some stellar indie comics, and Sensational Wonder Woman--the women-led anthology series celebrating Diana's 80th anniversary! After a brief discussion of the recent 9th episode of Black Lightning's final season, I get to talk about season one of INVINCIBLE on Amazon Prime! The finale aired this past week, so if you don't want spoilers: skip this section! It was a surprising show, based off another infamous Robert Kirkman comic series. I wrap up the Geek TV section with some brief comments on the Netflix She-Ra series, which I watched for the first time this weekend! Last is the news, which includes casting announcements from the HBO Green Lantern project and Titans season three, creator announcements from the Static Shock and Iron Heart projects, and my personal favorite of the bunch, the announcement of a new Sailor Moon movie coming to Netflix June 3rd! I'll be back for episode 16B this Friday, May 7th, to discuss this week's new and noteworthy comic books, the Falcon and the Winter Solider episode of Assembled on Disney+, this morning's MCU title announcements and teases, and any other news or speculation that hits between now and then! I hope to see you back for that next episode, but either way--have empathy towards others, and remain authentically sweaty.
comic book pulls
- +best picks from this past week - Silk #2 - I love the new dynamic of Cindy and her brother, we've never gotten to see it an it works so well. - Harley Quinn #2 - continues to be really good, but in this issue I have a less obvious time explaining why. the first issue was a stellar kick-off, and here we get some more build-up for the future of the series. We learn more about her new sidekick, who used to work as a member of the Joker gang, and wants to reform himself the way Harley is tring to do for herself. - by stephanie phillips and riley rossmo - Black Widow #6 - Nat is trying to find a sense of normalcy in San Francisco after the extreme experiences in her last arc. she comes across a young pick-pocket and is intruiged by her skill, so she offers her a job training under her like a sidekick. It'll take a little convincing but it does look like she'll be a character for a while in this series. - loving nat's new outfit, very stealthy modern. looks great for her shtick. - Beta Ray Bill #2 - kicks off with a truly amazing double spread of his ship, skuttlebutt. you see the whole interior like a shelter in Fallout, and every single room and corridor has something to be seen and appreciated. from someone drawing a dick on an artist's drawing board to the marvel editorial department to real-world sports flags, it's a really awesome spread. - after the epitomy that this mini series is going to be about Bill finding a way to return to his preferred Korbinite form, this is a phenominla seccond issue. - Bill is met by Skurge, one of the wildest asgardians, and an old friend. Skurge died some time ago and reports to Bill that he was astrally floating and witnessed his "shame" with Lady Sif, so he got the fates to allow him out of Valhalla. first, obvious thought: there's no way they'd just let him go back to life for Bill. No offense, I love BIll, but he's not THAT important to the gods. - they find Odin in a bar, which is where he spends a lot of his time these days, and he tells them that there is no way for Bill to make a new stormnbreaker hammer, but there is perhaps one weapon powerful enough: surter's sword, with which he long ago destroyed Bill's own world, and he failed to stop him. - the sword rests in Muspelheim, a terrible place where the gods store the monsters they can't even control. so, this series will now be Bill, Skurge who might be Loki, and Pip the troll (because he feels ugly as well and does not love himself as well) fighting through that place to get him the sword that will hopefully let him transform once again. - Robin #1 - Robin has left gotham without a trace, looking to start his own legacy. he's the son of the bat and the deadliest woman in the DC universe, so he's got a lot going for him. but still, the issue ends with his defeat, as his heart is actually pulled from his chest. - my thoughts are this is real, and he's dead, but he's going ot get brought back in the lazarus pit, most liekly by his mother or one of her followers. to add to that, it'd be realy cool if he comes back a touch aged up, since Jon Kent was aged up and now damian is just kinda this kid for no real reason. - pulls here Black Lightning S04E09 - were at the point in the season where I'm starting to see them put in the steps for wrapping things up on the show overall. - the episode started off with Lynn dreaming that she kills her entire family in the process of trying to remove their powers without their consent. if that's not a warning sign, idk what is. - Jennifer is back to doing more social media as Lightning, which basically no one thinks is a good idea and I have to agree. - i'm 100% watching this for Painkiller now. we know he has a potential future onscreen, and it somehow feels like they're focusing more on him in order to switch him out and make him the main character of the black lightning universe. Invincible Season 1 - the show starts and you get introduced to the main character, Mark Grayson. He's the son of Omni-Man, what's easily coparable to DC's Superman--came from a Utopian planet that works on peacekeeping through the galaxy, so that's why he's on Earth. - Mark has always known that someday he'll come into powers of his own, and now he's late in highschool, and the powers finally show up. when he proudly reports that to his parents, his mom is excited for him but his dad is solemn and odd about it. - his dad is a member of this world's equivalent to the justice league, with all the regular tropes of fast one, OP one, rich broody one, warrior woman, and ocean person. don't get attached. because when Omni Man learns his son has matured physically, he sends a message out to the other league members, which he technically isn't, and when they all gather in their base, he methodically slaughters every one of them. just in case you were wondering, this is NOT a kids show. the reason this show has a vibe of the Boys is definitely the violence, but the rest of the plot is tottaly it's own. - So. No one knows Omni Man killed all the heroes, they think he was just the sole survivor. - Mark has regular teenager issue with girls, but now he has more issues because he teams up with a group of teenage superheroes, and gets wrapped up in all their drama, too. - meanwhile in the background there's this creepy government guy who is the first to figure out Omni Man was the murderer, and basically puts steps in place to find out why. - it takes untul the second to last episode for Mark and his mom to realize what his dad really is, and in this past week's finale we learn the truth of his planet. they are conquerers, raiding the galaxy and taking over planets all over the place, slaughtering awyone who doesn't fall into line. He was sent to Earth to have a child, then to raise the child to help him take over the planet. he tells Mark that his alien DNA is extremely dominant, so even as half human he is almost entirely the same species as his father. - Mark learns his father is evil when he witnesses him absolutelty destroy the revived body of one of his former fellow superheroes, and he can hardly beleive it. there's a loooong moment of shock before he can even respond to the situation. - his father tries to convince him that humans aren't worht anyting. they live thousands of years, he sees his own wife as more of a pet and she HEARS THIS, because she's witht he FBI or CIA guy or whatever, watching this all go down. - to truly show him how meaningless humans are, he throws Mark through the city. he crashes through buildings, destroys countless cars, and causes a bodycount likely in the hundreds. Mark is horrified at the destruction. it's...brutal. to make matters worse, Omni man shows back up and smashes his son through the ground, into a subway, and then stands on the trac, holding Mark out in front of him, as a train tries to pass by where they stand. the result is Mark's body splitting the train like a knife through butter, and brutally murdering anyone who was on it, by being an unmoveable object cutting through anything or anyone that passes by. absolutely horrifying scene left behind, Mark's body is covered in athick layer of blood. THen he gets dragged to Everset, and even more poeple die in the destruction on the way. it is an intense, brutal scene that for a moment lets you step into Oni-Man's shoes and kind of see and understand how he sees us, the humans, as actual ants. it's wild. - since Mark refuses to help him take over the planet, Omni Man decides to kill him. he actually says whats another 17 years, like wow. just gonna make another kid if this one doesn't turn out evil enough. which brings up the point that he really should have seen this coming if he raised the kid as human and kind, of course he isn't going to go along with your evil surprise masterplan. - as Mark is on the brink of death from his dad beating his faace in, Omni Man remembers a sweet memory from Mark's childhood, and it's enough to stop him and drive him away with anger and frustration. as he flies off-planet, we see he has tears in his eyes. - It takes Mark a long-ass time to wake up from the basic coma he was beaten into, and his dad still hasn't been seen or heard from. Mark ends up meeting with the interplanetary dude from earlier on in the season, and it's revelaed that Omni-Man's poeple are known to do this, and they're probab;y not foing to just let them go. - so yeah. Omni-Man is DEFINITELY going home to report issues and come back with a damn army or supers. - renewed for 2 AND 3 She-Ra on Netflix - Binged almost all 5 seasons this weekend! really liked it as we got into it more. the intro makes me cringe harder than I knew possible. but otherwise, it's a super enjoyable show - I wasn;t expecting it to have so much space stuff involved, like with space portals and space travel and moving planets and planetary superpowers and all kinds of wild shit like that. I guess people ewre mad She-Ra wore shorts under her dress in the first few seasons, but she's like 15, you creeps. In the 5th season she transitions into pants, which honestly looks super sharp and put together and i love it. - I'm not sure if there's gong to be a 6th season, I see reports of yes and no all over the internet. But, the latest reports seem to be leaning towards Yes, so let's hope so! Sailor Moon Eternal the Movie - June 3rd on Netflix - based off the Dream arc (book 7) of the original manga - the dream arc is the arc with Chibiusa, the Unicorn, and the villains who search for a Pure Heart so they can find the Unicorn, and Sailors Neptune and Uranus end up involved, Chibiusa falls in love with the unicorn but it's okay because it ends up being a real boy! that's my understanding based on the original anime, I'm still reading the manga so I'll have this part fresh in my mind when the movie premiers. - 2 parts, probably just 2 hour long episodes. Green Lantern movie news - Finn Wittrock cast as Guy Gardner - has starred in AHS, Ratchet (on Netflix), American Crime Story, Lala Land, 2017 A midsummer Night's Dream, 2019 Plus One, The Big SHort, Judy, and Unbroken. - He has dark brown hair and Guy is traditiojnally a red-head, so I'm very curious how that'll work out. he has a very feminine face, so I can see him playing a kind of loud and cocky space cop character who dates other men. Static Shock series update - Michael B Jordan announces Randy McKinnon will be writing a draft - Randy served as writer-producer on the WAR OF THE WORLDS TV series for Apple +, and was a writer for CHAMBERS – a Netflix original series starring Uma Thurman and Tony Goldwyn. plus disney movie Safety Titans S3 news - Vincent Kartheiser cast as Scarecrow - played Pete Campbell on Mad Men - joins newcomers Blackfire, Jason as Red Hood Ironheart news - Chinaka Hodge hired to write the show's script - "Chinaka Hodge is an American poet, educator, playwright and screenwriter. She has received national recognition for her publications, especially her artistic work on gentrification." - poetry collections include For Girls with Hips: Collected Poems and Writings (2006) and Dated Emcees (2016)
