Happy new comic book day! Not so happy for me or any other local comic readers, I'm afraid, due to circumstances out of our control. Mother Nature is giving my part of the world a good smack-down today, so continue reading to see what's up and how I'm handling it! Today is Wednesday, AKA New Comic Book Day! Every Wednesday, all the comic publisher release any new material they have for that week: paperback comics, volumes, special editions, all of it comes out on Wednesday. Why? According to some, the day on which releases come out has changed over the years for various reasons, but no one seems to have a single solid reason for it. My favorite explanation comes from Reddit user Bayls_171: "All the other days are taken. Monday is a shit day and no one wants new releases on Mondays. DVDs and shit come out on tuesdays. Thursdays and Fridays are typically new theatre releases. And then the weekend is when a lot of stores close, or have shorter hours, so it’s bad to have new releases then. So Wednesday it is." Now that's a line of logic I can follow.
In any case, today is Wednesday, but I will not be getting any comics. It just so happens I currently live in a part of the world that gets regularly (annually, really) slammed by late-summer tropical weather. This year, my city is right in the path of Hurricane Dorian, which is on it's way from absolutely demolishing the Bahamas. I've been lucky since living here, none of the 3-4 serious hurricane scares have turned out to be much of anything by the time they got to us. However, tropical weather in this part of the country is like a game of numbers. It's only a matter of time before one hits us bad, so this could be it. That being said, this is not the time for panic of excessive worry. I'm lucky enough to have car and renter's insurance that I can afford, and the company which I get it through is known to be very good about natural disaster type situations. Additionally, I have made sure to read all the facts I can to make an educated decision and adequately prepare for what may be coming. In my search for information, I have discovered the new house my partner and I live in is an an area that MIGHT flood. It would take at least six feet of water for the roads and driveways to be completely covered, and then several more over that to get into the homes. I live in a two-story townhouse with no sickly or weak trees around that might break and cause window damage, so we are likely covered on that aspect, and if water does get into our house, we can easily keep our valuables and electronics upstairs. We have provisions to last a couple days without power, and the fridge and freezer have been set up to the best of our abilities to retain their chill after an outage. Sandbags are prepped for piling outside the doors should the storming get really bad, in fact we already have them lined up on the back door. My first aid kit was updated this past weekend, and my cat, Luci, has all of her documentation and tags ready to go and on her collar, respectively. Our logic in staying was really based on the fact the closest place I would be able to go is 8 hours away and no one really knows what's about to happen. It would be an awful waste of time and money to drive those 8 house, stay for a day, and drive back with no storm having occurred. Even if we made the drive and the storm came in while we were gone and really messed stuff up, it wouldn't really make a difference that we were gone. The damage would still be the same, and we'd still have to deal with it. Staying here, inside the house is the safest place to be and with one window on each side of each floor, I feel pretty confident I'll be okay. I'd rather be here to deal with any flooding damage that may occur than be stuck somewhere else. I can handle the power being out for a day or two, if it comes to that. Having Luci makes travel complicated as well. And, of course, the storm effects mail, AKA this week's shipment of comics to local shops in the area. If you're in a similar situation and are really bummed out about not getting the reading in ASAP, you can buy digital downloads of most new releases online from the publisher. Personally, I'm waiting for all this to blow over before going out for pretty much anything, comics included. I guess that means Friday is going to be a big errands day! It'll be nice, at that point, getting out of the house. Until then, I'll be holed up at my desk, trying to figure out what to write about next. Stay sweaty out there, and stay safe from these storms!
