New Comics Pull List, January 22nd, 20201/21/2020 You might think, given a three-day weekend, that I would be long finished by now with my standard weekly comics pull list. Seeing as it's Tuesday and I'm only just starting, you'd be wrong. If I had to make an excuse, I guess I'd say it's because my birthday also took place over the long weekend, so I spent a lot of time....doing that. So, with my lack of drive to see this week's post completed as usual. I'm going to try something a little different. Instead of individually writing out each book's solicitation an my response to it, I'll do this week's pulls en mass for speed's sake. This is totally new and different for me, so things might get weird. Continue Reading to see how I do! This is getting back into the groove of very large comic book pull lists! And this week, at last, we're getting some pretty good variety. From Book! Studios this week I'm reading two releases. Once and Future is a real-world-meets-fantasy adventure following a literature professor who is on the run after discovering the Gran who raised him is involved in an Arthurian legend conspiracy. Full of tidbits from the classic tales, this comic re-writes the mysterious times of King Arthur and his court, shedding a whole new light on the world's history. At this point, our protaganist is faced with one final show-down against Galahad--a powerful foe for him in this story.
Also provided by Boom! Studios this week is the third issue of Folklords, which takes place in a world that is the reverse of ours. Instead of young children fantasizing about magic, fairies, and the like, this world is full of those types of things, and our young protagonist dreams of office jobs, suits, and mundane modern cities. He's on a coming-of-age quest with a school friend, searching for the forbidden secrets of their society. They've only just made it out of the village, so I'm hoping issue three starts the real adventure. Dynamite publishing brings the new issue of Vampirella this week as well. In issue 7, Christopher Priest will be continuing to weave the story of Vampirella's past. As I've mentioned before, I really dig what Priest has been doing with this book, Vampi's history can be quite a jumbled mess, and he's clearly trying to make some sense of it. The art is almost crude, but in a way that fits the scenes of murderous nun gangs breaking into downed ships, violent interrogations, and of course, lazy therapy sessions with the most skeptical version of Samuel L Jackson you've ever seen. This issue will pick up on Vampi's vacation with her witch friend, so chaos is bound to ensue. Reigning it in just a little is Far Sector #3. This is the first book I've kept up with from DC's Young Animal line of publishing, and I have to say I'm surprisingly enjoying it. The plot is incredible--a man-made planet of billions of lifeforms across a handful of races decided ages ago to biologically flip the switch to their emotions. It solved their problems, until now, when a string of murders has an Earth-based Green Lantern leading the case. She's a refreshing character--occasionally unsure of herself, as any Green Lantern should be, but more than confident--and competent --in a fight. With the first clues of the murders in hand, this third issue should see our Lantern-turned-detective hunting down suppliers for a new drug that allows the planet's inhabitants to feel emotions--a dangerous game when the society has been long bred to not have to deal with a single emotion in generations. I'll throw this week's DC Black Label book in here as well, since it's a minor publishing house on it's own. The comic from them this week is Batman: Curse of the White Knight number six. This is the second series in Sean Gordon Murphy's self-named Murphyverse, expanding on the groundwork the first laid down. It's an incredible universe, inventive as well as brilliantly original. With this series especially, I feel like Murphy has been giving us massive reveal after massive reveal, building up to---who knows? Gotta keep reading to find out! That brings us to the (main) Big Two! DC Comics this week brings me Batman Beyond #40, which is the third part of the Batwoman Beyond story line. It also includes Batman #87, which is the second book of James Tynion's new run. I was happy to see in #86 that Tynion appears to be keeping most if not all of the work his predecessor Tom king put into the character, such as his relationship with Selina Kyle, and the death of Alfred. Last for DC is Wonder Woman #750--a landmark issue that will contain several stories from celebrated creators. Actually, it's notable that #750 is $9.99 and about 97 pages; this week's Birds of Prey Giant special is 100 pages but $4.99. Go figure! I recommend getting both those issues, if you can, as they'll be excellent thick reads. Which brings us at last to Marvel. Marvel usually has the most content for me week-to-week, which is the case again today. the follow-up to Agents of Atlas by Greg Pak starts this week in Atlantis Attacks #1. W ended AoA last month with the reveal that the Big Nguyen Company had actually stolen a powerful dragon from Atlantis--who are not happy about the theft. The same Agents of Atlas team will appear in this new series, as well as members from the original team. Another #1 this week at Marvel is Guardians of the Galaxy, by Al Ewing of Immortal Hulk. This team is set up to be pretty stellar, with members old and new. I like Ewing's writing, but I honestly can't say I know what to expect from this series. Guardians books have evolved immensely over the past 5-10 years, in terms of team membership and style. It isn't hard to imagine Ewing will be eager to make his mark and define this new phase for the Guardians through his plot. There are two Dawn of X books this week in the forms of Excalibur and Marauders, both #6. We left off in #5 of Excalibur with Rogue somehow becoming one with Apocalypse. this is no doubt what he wanted, so I'm a little worried for the southern belle. Whatever the plan is, it's all about to go down. As for Marauders, recently it's all been a lot of talk about power-plays and who can outsmart who--I'm hoping they come to a conclusion and get on with life soon, or I might be replacing this one with some of the forthcoming new Dawn of X books.
